Shalom from the mountains of the tribe of Judah! I’m here with my family enjoying some time together away from our home near Galilee where our lives are constantly being interrupted by sirens telling us to hide in our bomb shelters. Truly, it can get wearying sometimes. But it is Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of a new year, and we are very ready to begin what we anticipate being a much better tour around the sun. Last week, I remember thinking, “Surely next week will be a little calmer.” That’s what I get for forgetting that I’m living in the Middle East. The ground battle had already started last Thursday and the IDF was getting ready to cross the border into Lebanon. Hassan Nasrallah and his minions at Hezbollah were firing off rockets like they were on a clearance sale and making all sorts of threats. Then came Friday, and everything quite literally blew up! The United Nations was meeting in New York, and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to go to America to address that august body. Why waste time flying halfway across the world to talk to a bunch of sanctimonious politicians who will likely just walk out as soon as you start speaking? Keep reading; it’s quite possible that his departure was actually a coordinated distraction. With Netanyahu gone, Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of Hezbollah, held a meeting in his secret bunker located under a residential building in the Dahieh suburub of Beirut. Included in this gathering were many of Hezbollah’s leaders, as well as an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) general. What was this its purpose? It was to hear via the Iranian general a special message from Iran’s supreme leader warning Nasrallah that Israel was preparing to kill him. The only hope the Hezbollah leader had was to hide in Iran. Whether or not the IRGC general had a chance to deliver this accurate warning, we’ll never know. Not long after Netanyahu stepped down from the podium at the UN, Israeli Air Force (IAF) F-15I fighter jets were racing into the skies above Beirut. When the planes reached Nasrallah’s hideout, they dropped their cargo – more than 80 bombs, including at least 15 one-ton bunker busters. It was a fitting end for Nasrallah, a man with the blood of many Israelis and Americans on his hands. The secretary-general of Hezbollah wasn’t the only one to die. All of his commanders that he had brought in died with him. One major loss was Ali Karaki, the commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, who was killed in the operation. Also eliminated was the IRGC general with the Supreme Leader’s message, Abbas Nilforoushan, deputy commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and commander of Quds Force in Lebanon. In one incredible airstrike, the head of the monster was destroyed, along with its neck, shoulders, and upper torso. On Saturday, Hashem Safieddine, a cousin of Nasrallah, was named the new secretary-general of the battered terrorist organization. I’m guessing that’s what they call a “temp job”. Even with Nasrallah gone, there is still enough left of Hezbollah to put up a fight. Rockets continue to fly over the border. Most are intercepted, but some reach the ground. So far in the most recent fighting, no human Israeli has been killed by a Hezbollah rocket. Some chickens, cows, and a horse haven’t been so lucky. Because the terrorists refuse to lay down their arms, Israel’s Operation Northern Arrows continues. Fighter jets are decimating weapons caches in Lebanon and Syria. Ground forces are tracking down and blowing up southern Lebanon’s tunnel system. Even before the IDF moved across the border and into the towns, they revealed evidence they had found of just how heinous the original plan to attack Israel had been. As I’ve said many times before, this was supposed to be a simultaneous attack involving all of Iran’s proxies – Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and the other Syrian and Iraqi proxy militias. Of these attack forces, none was stronger or better trained than Hezbollah. For years, they had prepared their Radwan force for an invasion into Israel. They were fully ready to invade, brutalize, rape, torture, and murder like Hamas did, but they would do it with an organized plan and much better weapons. They had maps for Jewish towns, layouts for military sites, and strategies all prepared. But then Yahya Sinwar of Hamas couldn’t wait any longer, and he launched early, which was truly a miraculous intervention by God. Now, instead of Hezbollah carrying out their well-planned invasion of Israel from Lebanon, Israel is invading Lebanon to track down and eliminate Hezbollah. While the fighting intensified on the northern border of Israel, the Islamic regime in Iran was fuming and stewing. They were already embarrassed after the failure of Operation True Promise back in April 2024, when they fired 170 killer drones, 30-plus cruise missiles, and more than 120 ballistic missiles at Israel, resulting in the critical injury of a single Israeli-Bedouin. In the ensuing six months, not only had Israel killed Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the heart of Tehran, but now they had the audacity to wipe out Iran’s faithful toady Hassan Nasrallah and their own IRGC deputy commander Abbas Nilforoushan in one shot. Iran had egg all over its face. Israel had to pay. Thus, on Tuesday night, Israel received a warning – oddly enough, from the U.S. – that Iran was about to ballistic missile the heck out of them. Sure enough, 190 gigantic ballistic missiles left launchers in Iran bound for Israel in Operation True Promise 2, a name that feels like it desperately needs a subtitle, like “Back from the Dead” or “This Time its Personal”. The attack didn’t begin well. There were a number of missiles that went up and came right back down. Five Iranian soldiers lost their lives this way. But the rest soared toward Israel in the largest ballistic missile strike the world has ever seen. In Israel, we scrambled for our bomb shelters where we prayed for God’s intervention. When we started hearing the booms, it was obvious that something incredible was taking place. Quite a few of us went back outside to video what was taking place in the skies. In Israel, we have three layers of missile protection. We have the Iron Dome for short-range rockets, David’s Sling for mid-range, and Arrow that targets ballistic missiles that can fly outside the earth’s atmosphere. What we saw in the skies, and what you can see in some of my Telegram videos, was absolutely miraculous. All three systems were working together, simultaneously bringing down rockets at different altitudes. The odds of all three functioning as they did in absolute unison is beyond computation. But the miracles didn’t end there. Some of the missiles got through and hit the ground. But when they did, they completely missed every place people were hiding. If just one of those ballistic missiles hit an apartment building or a mall or a military base, hundreds would have died. However, it simply didn’t happen. God’s hand was over His people. A few buildings were struck, and some minor infrastructure was damaged, but not a single live rocket landed on anyone. It’s true that there was one Arab in Jericho who had the husk of a destroyed missile fall on him when was out walking instead of hunkering down in a shelter like he was supposed to, but that’s it for the deaths. Social media is filled with stories of Israelis reporting rockets falling all around them, but not one person was hurt. Most of the rockets that made it through the curtain of protection landed in open areas – in sand, in water, in empty spaces. Most people don’t get the magnitude of what we witnessed Tuesday night. One of my news sources, Hillel Fuld, expressed it perfectly. He wrote, “What we witnessed last night was the equivalent of God splitting the sea right before our eyes.” That is not an exaggeration, despite the attempts of the media to downplay what occurred. Again, as Hillel put it, “Last night was an incredible display of the collaboration between two of the powers that protect the Jewish people: The IDF and Hashem.” Hashem in English means “the Name”. It is God Himself. A common phrase we are beginning to hear around Israel is that we are living in biblical times. Even the most secular Israelis and agnostics are saying it. There is no other way to describe what has taken place. We can see in Ukraine and Russia the effects of ballistic missiles. It’s devastating. But neither of those sides ever faced 190 fired at the same time. And not only did we face them, but we came out smelling like a rose. God is truly amazing. It is one hundred percent true that most of the population of Israel still has a veil over their hearts when it comes to the Messiah. But God promised that He would never abandon His people, even when they turned their backs on Him. He laid out a plan in the Bible that would eventually have them turning their hearts toward Him, and it fits exactly into what we are seeing taking place in Israel today. After this attack, Israel now has the perfect excuse to launch an unprecedented strike on Iran’s gas and oil infrastructure, as well as its military bases. We’ll likely hold off on the nuclear sites until the time will hopefully come when the American political scene will be a bit more favorable to the necessary actions. But Iran is about to get shaken, possibly even before this article is published. That is when they will realize that they’ve wasted their money on all their proxies and will turn to a coalition made up of Russia and Turkey that already has its eyes on Israel. Once again, this all fits perfectly into Ezekiel 38 and 39. Israel’s battle is far from over. First, there is the international fight against the countries and collective national bodies that continue to criticize and condemn Israel for fighting against those who have not only sworn to destroy our country but have acted upon it. Yesterday, Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz took a bold step against the United Nations, declaring its secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, to be persona non grata in Israel and banning him from entering the country. He wrote on X, “Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil.” Katz went on to condemn Guterres for refusing to denounce Hamas’s atrocities of October 7, saying that he will be “remembered as a stain on the history of the UN.” But our fighting isn’t just in the political arena. Israel is still facing active fronts in Yemen, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Gaza. Most dangerous of all right now, however, are the terrorist attacks spilling out of the West Bank. Tuesday saw two Palestinians open fire on a light rail train, killing seven and injuring many more. They were both neutralized. One of those killed was a 33-year-old mother who was shielding her 9-month-old baby son. In that one brief moment, those two deranged terrorists killed more people with a gun and a knife than Iran could with 190 ballistic missiles. Tonight, as I write this, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting with his defense minister, the head of the Mossad, the head of Shin Bet, and his chief of staff. They already have the authorization to move forward as they best see fit. When I wake up tomorrow, it could be to a different Middle East or even a different world. But that is nothing new. It seems that waking up to a new world is becoming common place around these parts. These two terror proxies of Iran have been a thorn in the side of Israel for decades now. They had grown so large that it was once unthinkable that Israel would be able to defeat them. At least that’s what Hamas and Hezbollah had fooled themselves into believing. The political and military echelon of Israel were no doubt confident of their ability to deal crushing blows to their enemies. However, they needed the steely will and international legitimacy to achieve it. In the most tragic of ways, October 7 provided both. If strategists are to be believed, once Israel has dealt with Hezbollah, it will turn its attention to the head of the terror snake – Iran. Since this conflict is on the horizon, it is helpful to understand the ideology which drives the Iranian clerical and political leadership. Although many nations have historically dismissed Iranian rhetoric as the ramblings of an irritating but incapable enemy, they have since proven they are very much committed to their goal of destroying Israel. In Iran, the highest-ranking political leader is not the president, it is the Supreme Leader. The current Supreme Leader is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On 15 January 2001, Ayatollah Khamenei left Israel in no doubt of his hatred when he said this: “It is the mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to erase Israel from the map of the region.” If that sounds familiar, consider the words of Psalm 83:4: “They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.'” Similarly, one month prior to Khamenei’s speech, then Iranian President at the time Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani declared: “The Jews should expect a ‘reverse exodus’, because one day, the tumour will be removed from the body of the Islamic World, and then millions of Jews who moved there will become homeless again.” Rafsanjani died in 2017, no doubt bitterly disappointed that his antisemitic desire remained unfulfilled. Another extremist who never brought about the conditions of fulfilling his long-held desire was former (and now dead) Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. On October 22, 2002, he said this: “Islamic prophecies and not only Jewish prophecies declare that this state [Israel] will come into being, and all the Jews of the world will gather from all corners of the world in occupied Palestine. But this will not be so their false messiah can rule in the world, but so that Allah can save you the trouble of running them down all over the world. And then the battle will be decisive and crushing.” Like Haman, his words have come back upon his head. Instead of Israel being dealt a crushing blow, Nasrallah has been decisively crushed under tons of rubble! As we are now witnessing, all of this talk about the destruction of Israel is not just empty rhetoric. It has real world consequences and that is why Iran poured billions of dollars into arming proxies and developing a nuclear weapons program. Iran even used the opportunity to declare its intentions at the UN – a body which was supposedly set up to prevent war. In 2010, as then President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stood at the podium he said this: “O Allah, hasten the arrival of Imam al-Mahdi – and grant him good health and victory – and make us his followers and all those who attest to his rightfulness.” Then, in 2012, Ahmadinejad also said this: “God Almighty has promised us a man of kindness, a man who loves people and loves absolute justice, a man who is a perfect human being and is named Imam Al-Mahdi, a man who will come in the company of Jesus Christ and the righteous. By using the inherent potential of all the worthy men and women of all nations and I repeat, the inherent potential of ‘all the worthy men and women of all nations’ he will lead humanity into achieving its glorious and eternal ideals.” By now, we see the mention of three intriguing characters whom Iranian Shiites, in particular, believe will appear in the end times:
As you can see, many Muslims are also keenly watching events in the world, believing that the signs of the times indicate that their version of eschatology is about to be fulfilled. The trouble is, in their version, Israel has to be destroyed. Will this happen? No! Moscow aims to raise the stakes and discourage further support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, both the Concept of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation and the Kremlin’s 2024 National Threat Assessment call for displacing the U.S. and the West as global leaders, with the fall of Ukraine viewed as a crucial step in reshaping the international order under Moscow and Beijing. As the cost of supporting Ukraine rises, the cost of allowing its collapse may be even greater. Russia’s Defense Ministry is set to gain the power to assess whether conditions for deploying nuclear weapons are met, as part of upcoming changes to the country’s nuclear doctrine, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The revisions are being made in response to increased involvement of nuclear powers in the war in Ukraine and NATO’s expanded presence near Russia. President Vladimir Putin recently announced plans to expand Russia’s nuclear policy, allowing for nuclear responses to major air attacks and considering attacks by non-nuclear nations backed by nuclear powers as joint actions. Peskov emphasized that these changes are a clear message to Western countries contemplating support for Ukrainian long-range missile strikes on Russian territory. The amendments will soon be formalized legally. In a further statement, Peskov emphasized that the updated nuclear doctrine is intended as a direct warning to Western countries. He noted that the changes signal potential consequences for nations participating in attacks on Russia, not necessarily with nuclear weapons, and stressed that the doctrine is being adjusted due to rising tensions near Russia’s borders. While the changes do not involve increasing Russia’s nuclear arsenal, they come as Ukraine continues to seek approval from Western allies to use long-range precision weaponry to strike deep inside Russian territory, a move that has met with caution from the White House to prevent further escalation. This reduction in the nuclear threshold comes amid ongoing debates in Russia over whether the country should consider a nuclear first strike. These discussions have reached the highest levels of leadership, including President Vladimir Putin. The debate was sparked in June by Sergei Karaganov, honorary chairman of Russia’s Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, who referred to nuclear arms as “God’s Weapons” arguing that the West must be forced into retreat by threatening, or even launching, a nuclear strike. However, this radical stance has been largely rejected by Russian experts, who contend that nuclear war is a poor strategy with potentially catastrophic consequences. While figures such as former president Dmitry Medvedev and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov have hinted at nuclear use, Karaganov’s advocacy for a first strike has gained little traction. Ultimately, the decision rests with Putin and his inner circle. TASS, Russian News Agency, published an article by Igor Korotchenko, Editor-in-Chief of the National Defense Journal, outlining key updates to Russia’s nuclear doctrine. According to Korotchenko, the revised policy allows Russia to engage nuclear weapons if NATO collectively or a single non-nuclear country takes military action against Russia. For example, the deployment of Polish troops in Ukraine or Romanian and Polish efforts to down Russian aircraft would be viewed as aggression, justifying a nuclear response. Additionally, any U.S. strike with air or seaborne cruise missiles would be considered a casus belli, leading to potential nuclear retaliation against the U.S. Korotchenko emphasized that these changes represent a significant departure from previous doctrine, now identifying the U.S., UK, and France as nuclear adversaries if conventional military actions against Russia are detected. The revised nuclear doctrine has also expanded the scope of Russia’s protective umbrella to include its allies. Russia Today (RT) reported, “Deep strikes by Ukraine and an attack on Belarus would now trigger an atomic response.” The Kremlin offered a tongue-in-cheek explanation for revising the nuclear doctrine, with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov criticizing the existing policy as “too general” and arguing that warning had to be made clearer. Since May, Kiev has called on the U.S. and its allies to remove all restrictions on the use of their weapons against Russia, which Moscow sees as direct Western involvement. While Putin reiterated that nuclear weapons remain a last resort to protect Russian sovereignty, he also recognized the rapidly changing military-political landscape and the new threats facing Russia and its allies. A significant percentage of Americans are growing weary of funding the Ukraine war, with the looming threat of nuclear conflict fueling calls to end U.S. and NATO support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia’s ambition to reshape the global order, with Beijing and Moscow at the helm, is clear. In his letter advocating for the use of nuclear weapons in the context of the Ukraine conflict, Sergei Karaganov, honorary chairman of Russia’s Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, wrote, “failure (of the West) is accompanied by rapid changes, unprecedented in history, in the global balance of power in favor of the Global Majority, with China and partly India acting as its economic drivers, and Russia chosen by history to be its military-strategic pillar. This weakening infuriates not only the imperial-cosmopolitan elites (Biden and Co.), but also the imperial-national ones (Trump).” By lowering the nuclear threshold, Putin aims to deter Western support for Ukraine. While this might seem like a lifesaving move in the short term, it would also advance the Moscow-Beijing axis’s goal of displacing the U.S. and positioning themselves as leaders of a new international order. In the long run, allowing Ukraine to collapse could prove more costly for the West than continuing to fund its defense. Jesus told us that things would get progressively worse as the final days approach. When His disciples asked Him about the end of the age, Jesus told of things to come. Remember, they were not asking about the Rapture because they didn’t even know there would be an ekklesia (the church). They were more concerned about when Jesus would rule the world. Jesus answered their questions, and we can see the things He described are intensifying. Specifically, He was talking to Jewish men about the very end of days. Today, as we approach the Rapture, we can see the events coming into focus. “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:11). There are many, many false teachings in this world, and those who don’t know God’s truth are suckered in by their lies. All roads do not lead to Heaven. Only faith in Jesus Christ will make a person righteous and able to stand before God. The Bible is the only place to find instructions for a life that honors God. It’s been described as Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. Christianity isn’t a religion; it’s a way of life. Compare all things you hear or read to Scripture. If the teaching doesn’t line up with Scripture, trust Scripture and throw away the lie. “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold’’ (Matthew 24:12). Iniquity is a condition without law; contempt and violation of law, and wickedness. Do we see that coming about today? We certainly do. I still cannot wrap my mind around the violent riots that burned businesses and killed people, all because a criminal died at the hands of the police. That should never have happened, but the resulting iniquity was demonic and beyond evil. Then I think of the cold-hearted events against citizens of Israel on October 7, 2023, and I’m sickened. Not only was the attack pure evil, but the reaction of many people was cold-hearted iniquity. Bible prophecy tells us these things will happen, and we shouldn’t live in fear. “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe” (Proverbs 29:25). Trust in the Lord, and show His love to others. Many Christians are uninterested in prophecy, yet they watch the false prophets of the secular news media preaching their mistruths. Things that once were very confusing and hard to understand are becoming very clear. For years, people have said that prophecy is just allegory. As life unfolds, we can see that God’s word was and is truth. Things that were impossible to understand even 5 years ago are crystal clear now. For instance, the Mark of the Beast. When John was given the Revelation, how could anyone understand people receiving a mark that would allow a person to buy and sell? It wasn’t until 2019 that this mystery began to be clear. People were forced to take a shot and wear a mask. There is much controversy over the shot, and I believe it was all a ploy to make people trust government mandates rather than God. “Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD” (Proverbs 29:26). We now see many health issues that can be directly traced to the shot. Now, Elon Musk has a plan for his Starlink satellites. They are making a grid all around the world so everybody can be tracked and monitored. Soon, a tiny chip will be inserted into a person’s hand or forehead which will be read by these satellites. Now isn’t the time to turn away from God but to draw nearer and closer to Him. Scripture has been proven true many times, and Biblical prophecy is becoming clearer every day. “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation” (2 Peter 1:19-20). Why don’t people study Bible prophecy? It’s a very good witnessing tool. The coming one world leader is counting on the fact that “Christians” are ignorant of Scripture, especially prophecy. This coming world leader is powered by Satan, who is the father of lies. Don’t be ignorant of truth, or you will fall for his lies. As I write this commentary, the WHO and the UN are meeting to conspire to become the rulers of the world. This will be a huge step in prophecy and making way for the Great Tribulation. America will soon vote for who we want to lead our nation for 4 more years. The takeover by the WHO has been in the works for a number of years, and Donald Trump removed the US from being a part of this organization. Unfortunately, Biden put us back into it, and Harris supports it. Brothers and sisters, wake up. Don’t be “woke,” but wake up to God’s truth and stand firm on His word. “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil” (Proverbs 3:7). If the preacher where you worship avoids prophecy, skips over the moral Scriptures, and doesn’t stand firm on Scripture, you’re in the wrong congregation. Study Scripture in order to discern truth from lies. God does love us, but if a person can claim to be a Christian while living their life pridefully in opposition to God’s truth, then we need to avoid that person or, in love, draw them back to God’s truth. You will be labeled a “hater,” but it’s better to be called names than to accept the evil in the world. We can’t expect a non-Christian to follow God’s truth, but the ways of the world should never be allowed to influence a Christian congregation. “For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” Ephesians 5:5-7. This isn’t hard to understand. Christians are to be separate from the world and totally given to God and His ways. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11). A modern-day example would be if your pastor invites a drag queen to lead the service and walk out. Reprove that preacher with Scripture and have no part in the evil. It is troublesome living in this day and age. I cannot understand how blind people are to the evil. Most people can feel the evil around but can’t recognize where it comes from. Christians are called to witness to the unbelievers. “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Jesus is the Light of the world, and His light shines through Christians. If we hide His light, then shame on us. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Don’t be ashamed of Christ. The power of the Holy Spirit is sealed within every true Christian, and when we speak His truth in love, that power shines in the darkness. “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed: we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body” (2 Corinthians 4:8-10). Jesus never said it would be easy, and history shows that Christians have been persecuted for our faith. Thank God for those strong Christians who faced lions rather than deny Christ. Can that happen today? Christians are being persecuted daily, and many are being martyred. Our strength is found in Christ. Christians do have the blessed hope found in Jesus and His truth. We are seeing the prophetic events of the Tribulation beginning to become intense, and it will get worse. Christians won’t see the Tribulation. “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:13-14). We will all be called Home prior to the worst time in human history. Until then, don’t let the troubles in this world overwhelm you. Draw closer to God and honor Christ in all you do. Good works won’t bring salvation, but they will help you to be an example to this fallen world. Don’t sit around wringing your hands in despair. Rather, show God’s love. Daily Jot: The Yorktown camping experience - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com As a kid, me and my best friend Sonny would go camping back in the woods at the farm every chance we could get. I still have the canvass two-man pup tent we used some 60 years ago. Camping, I guess, was always in my blood. But it is difficult to imagine camping with thousands of men in a battlefield situation such as Yorktown, Va where George Washington defeated the most powerful army on earth to win American independence from England. When we pull into a campground today, there are certain expectations of water, latrine, and space. The men that camped by the Chesapeake Bay with Washington had none of the luxuries we expect today and hardly what Sonny and I had at our primitive camp. There seemed to be certain levels of the Yorktown camp. One level was the makeshift dwelling of scrap wood and straw. Hard to imagine the heroes of the American Revolution sleeping in those conditions. Another level would be the more traditional that we see on television with the canvas tents all uniformly pitched in a nice straight line. And then there is the privilege of rank. Washington’s tent had many of the comforts that we see at campgrounds these days with the larger yurts and tents. Still, there were no bathhouses or restrooms. Imagine 19,000 men going without showers and facilities for months at a time. No wonder they defeated the British. At the American Revolution Museum camp at Yorktown, a docent in period dress explained to Chris, Service Dog Charlie and me the camping conditions of our soldiers. He described the huge campfire dug in a circle with a mound of coals in the middle. This served as the “kitchen” for the soldiers’ cooks. Meals consisted of some beans, maybe corn, mixed into some broth. We were told that the soldiers were fed this once a day. Hardly what we cook up on the Blackstone or even burgers on the grate over our campfires in our tidy spaces at the KOA, right? Then there was the store where soldiers could buy a ration of rum, whisky, beer, or cyder—nothing like the camp store we have these days. We took the tour bus into old Yorktown and visited the shops, ate at the outdoor café along the Bay by one of the only “swing” bridges left in America—instead of the traditional draw bridge, the George P Coleman Bridge pivots in the middle to allow ships to pass. We saw the Yorktown Victory Monument. And I had a conversation with Washington and the generals about the camping conditions at Yorktown. They remained stone-faced about the situation. At the end of the day, we set up our own camp at Camp Cardinal at Gloucester Point, had a campfire, watched some football on our outdoor TV set up—all a reminder of those great men of valor whose sacrifices made possible that even our camping experience could be so good. This verse conjures up images of God standing ready to erase our sinful past and let us start anew with a clean slate, only waiting for us to admit what we’ve done wrong. But what this verse doesn’t mention is how the cleansing takes place—or, more specifically, what’s necessary for the cleansing to take place. God doesn’t simply dismiss the charges against us like a lenient judge. His perfect justice demands that our sins be punished. And the punishment is death. We are helpless to save ourselves from that punishment. Only a perfect sacrifice, offered in our place, can satisfy God’s justice. The only perfect sacrifice is Jesus, God’s Son. God cleanses us from all wickedness. But the only cleansing agent that can remove sin is the blood of Jesus. The author of Hebrews wrote, “Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins” (9:14 NLT). God’s plan of salvation and forgiveness of sins required an unimaginable sacrifice. The best way to prepare to confess our sins is to meditate on Jesus’ sacrifice, to fully absorb what was necessary for our sins to be forgiven. The more we appreciate the gravity of our sins, the less likely we’ll be to downplay our confession. Remember, confession isn’t a plea bargain with God where we cop to our wrongdoing and get our record expunged. Confession isn’t a begrudging “Sorry” or “My bad.” Confession is agreeing with God. Let’s say you and I went out to eat together, and we both ordered burgers. If I said, “I think this burger is amazing,” and you said, “I do too,” we agree. If God says, “That’s sin, and I hate it,” and you say, “I agree with You, God; that’s sin, and I hate it too,” that’s confession. Genuine confession is a soul-deep awareness that our sin is so serious, and so destructive to our relationship with God, that repairing it required the death of His only Son. Genuine confession is a longing to restore that relationship, even if it means revealing our ugliest truths—admitting that a sudden temptation was more attractive to us than God’s perfect will or that we tried to grab the controls of our life from God so that we could steer in a direction that seemed exciting. A genuine confession comes from a humble heart. It doesn’t try to justify our behavior, offer excuses, shift the blame, or downplay the impact of our wrongdoing. Genuine confession sincerely regrets taking a path away from God and announces a 180-degree turn back to Him. First John 1:9 gives us a glimpse at how God responds to genuine confession and a humble heart. He doesn’t offer a half-hearted show of forgiveness. He doesn’t berate us for our faithlessness. He doesn’t restrict our access to Him. God is “faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (NLT).
