I have experienced a mix of emotions over the last week as I reflected on the situation my beloved country has been in since last October. The horrific October 7th massacre happened. Obviously, God allowed it to take place. We can and should hold the perpetrators responsible and accountable. They should all be given the maximum punishment, particularly so they will never get a chance to be released in a future hostage deal. However, just like the fall of Jerusalem’s first and second temples are often considered the direct result of the moral, cultural, and spiritual collapse within the nation of Israel, we must not overlook this aspect in the case of our current day’s disaster. The inner division within Israel today has, without a doubt, encouraged our enemies to carry out their vicious plan. They even admitted that in interrogations. There is a powerful and loud minority in Israel. It is well funded and it skillfully communicates its agenda as it owns most media outlets and advertising agencies. The flagship theme of this minority is that God, the Bible, and the Jewish faith are the reason for all of Israel’s problems. They don’t see a strong, spiritual connection to the land of their forefathers, nor do they see the amazingly obvious miracles (which were predicted by the prophets of Israel) that led to the birth of the state of Israel in 1948. These people want a liberal, secular, and progressive society. Democracy is a word they often use, but in reality, they won’t respect/accept the will of the majority as long as it contradicts their agenda. Their idea of democracy is that a legally-elected government by a legally-elected parliament must not do anything against the will of the liberal-packed supreme court. In other words – a non-elected supreme court is their god. These people are the “deep state” and they hold powerful positions within government offices, the IDF, the Israeli police, our secret services, our security establishment, as well as the academia and media. They were incredibly threatened by the judicial reform that was about to fix my country’s sick reality, and they remain completely willing to bring the nation down as long as they don’t lose their powerhouses. So, yes, God has allowed October 7th to happen. But much of the responsibility for what happened is on the shoulders of these people. Now it’s up to the rest of the nation to either capitulate to them or to vomit this sick phenomenon from among us! This situation is the reality in many other western countries as well. And prayer is the most effective weapon! In our fallen world, we are called to be a light and the salt of the earth. We are called to spread the gospel and announce that there is hope! It’s not found in democracy, capitalism, socialism, or any other “ism” you may think of. Our hope is in the Lord. Philippians 3:20 – “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior.” Hezbollah I wish I could say that things were starting to slow down, but that would be a lie. Aside from the day-to-day attacks from Hezbollah and the Israeli airstrikes in response, Northern Israel’s hospitals are preparing for the looming war with our enemy. We continue to intercept explosive projectiles on a daily basis. War is not a matter of if, but when. In the meantime, Israeli officials have voiced that part of the reason we’ve delayed entering a war is to build up our munitions supply – offensive and defensive. I don’t mean this arrogantly, but Hezbollah is going to be sorry by the time this is done. Hezbollah and Lebanon are bracing for impact. In fact, Lebanese sources reported that Amos Hochstein delivered an Israeli message to the Lebanese government according to which: If Hezbollah does not retreat north beyond the Litani River by 6/24, Israel will start a war in Lebanon. I gave a breaking news update on the countdown to war with Hezbollah on Wednesday! Make sure to give it a listen. In his speech just a couple of days ago, Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah communicated that: 1) The party that should be in fear now is the enemy, not us. 2) Hezbollah will continue its operations in support of Gaza and is prepared for all scenarios. 3) We possess a significant amount of information. The drone footage published yesterday is just a small part of many hours filmed in Haifa. 4) We know that Israelis are conducting drills in Cyprus and its airports, which they plan to use if their own airports or facilities are struck. 5) We warn Cyprus against opening its facilities to Israel. If it does, we will consider it part of the war. 6) All the weapons meant for Lebanon have already arrived. 7) These weapons will be revealed when necessary, and we have new weapons to introduce. 8) We produce some of the rockets we need. 9) We have a large number of drones because we manufacture them. 10) Hezbollah has a comprehensive and accurate target bank inside Israel and the capability to reach these targets. 11) The enemy must be prepared for us on land, air, and sea, and we will fight without constraints or limitations. 12) The Israeli enemy knows that what awaits it in the Mediterranean Sea is substantial. 13) This threat may also include the US. However, the Cyprian ambassador to Israel responded to this threat by stating that the country’s relationship with Israel is strong and that Nasrallah should really just bite his tongue. Moreover, the Cyprian foreign minister assured the terrorist group leader that Lebanon will pay a heavy price in response to any retaliation on Cyprian soil. The foreign minister even revealed that, if necessary, their fighter jets will accompany Israel in its attacks targeting Hezbollah. It’s nice to have a friend as a neighbor. Hamas While the IDF is making so much headway in Gaza, Israel has encountered its moments of sadness. On Saturday, Hamas fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF military vehicle, killing eight soldiers inside. Three more IDF soldiers died in separate events in Gaza just hours later. Sadly, on a day when we were brokenheartedly burying 11 of our sons who fell in the Gaza Strip defending the people and the land, the IDF announced that they would grant 11 hours of humanitarian ceasefire in the Rafah area to bring in hundreds of aid trucks for Hamas and its supporters. I know who is putting the pressure on us and I know why we had to surrender to it. The eyes of the cabinet are already on the northern border and we simply can’t afford any halt and/or delays in US-made armament shipments. So now you know who threatens us and how. If that’s not enough, these violence-loving cowards continue to use civilians as human shields where our troops are operating in Gaza. The IDF is expected to have full control of Rafah in the next couple of weeks. The International Community Allow me to remind you that while so much is happening in my neck of the woods, Russia’s agenda hasn’t left the scene. Vladimir Putin, just a few days ago, told all foreign powers to leave Asia & Europe. Interestingly enough, according to Ezekiel 38, he’ll one day get his way! Haven’t heard of the Taliban in a while? Don’t worry – They’ve voiced to Iran recently that they’re prepared to send thousands of fighters to go to war against Israel should Iran be interested. Iran is ready to flood Southern Lebanon and Southern Syria with waves of human fighters from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen in any upcoming war on Israel’s northern front – and America knows it. Israel intercepted a suspicious projectile from the east just days ago. Guess what – It was a cruise missile launched by the Shiite militias in Iraq. The United States Don’t underestimate the coming elections in America! Strong demonic powers are active right now to try and bring that country down so the next phase of the globalist plan can begin. The wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, and the failed immigration policies in America, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia all contribute to this picture. State-level cyberattacks and brainwashing tactics are being deployed by Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. The gullible, younger generation is under mental attacks like never before, while corrupt leaders are drugging their countries to do whatever it takes to avoid a conflict and pretending to have peace and safety. As an Israeli born Jew, I have no solution! But as a born-again believer I do! This is the essence of our faith in the Messiah! 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” You Are a Watchman You can either take part in the globalist agenda or do your part to stand up against it. The fact that a person has a suicidal mindset doesn’t mean we need to assist him in carrying it out. The same is true with our fallen world. We have a responsibility! We need to bring the light of the gospel and the hope of salvation to people! We need to live lives that reflect our faith. We need to make smart choices based on our strong convictions regarding family, sexual identity, the sanctity of life, and supporting Israel. If we say that as believers, we can’t or shouldn’t be involved in politics, it’s equal to running away from responsibility. This is especially true if that decision causes us not to vote! Remember: We are all watchmen! We’re aware of things on a spiritual level as well as the physical. The Lord said the following about the role of the watchman: Ezekiel 33:3-6 – “When he sees the sword coming upon the land, if he blows the trumpet and warns the people, then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, but did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning will save his life. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.” War Drums: Imminent Conflict Between Israel & Hezbollah – PNW Staff - https://www.prophecynewswatch.com/article.cfm?recent_news_id=6995 Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned on Wednesday of the potential outbreak of a wider conflict with Hezbollah, as the Iranian-backed terror group continued to launch rockets and drones at the Jewish state. Gallant made the comments during a situation assessment with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi at the military's Northern Command. "We are achieving readiness on land and in the air, strengthening our intelligence systems and preparing for every scenario," said Gallant. "We must all remember that Hezbollah started a war against us on Oct. 8, a day after Hamas attacked Israel, and since then, it has not stopped. We have an obligation to change the situation in the north, and to ensure the safe return of our citizens to their homes, and we will find a way to achieve this," he added. "Hezbollah's increasing aggression is bringing us to the brink of what could be a wider escalation, one that could have devastating consequences for Lebanon and the entire region," IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in an English-language video statement. "When we say that we will not let October 7th happen again on any one of our borders, we mean it," Hagari added. Noting Hezbollah's "refusal to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 1701," which ended the Second Lebanon War and mandated that the terror group withdraw north of the Litani River, Hagari said that "because of Hezbollah's military infrastructure, weapons and fire at Israel from the area south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon, and because of Lebanon's failure to enforce 1701 on Hezbollah, Israel will take the necessary measures to protect its civilians, until security along our border with Lebanon is restored." Hagari warned that "one way or another we will ensure the safe and secure return of Israelis to their homes in northern Israel. That is not up for negotiation." The Israel Defense Forces' Northern Command announced on Tuesday the approval of operational plans for a war against Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon and are now prepared for the next steps when they should come. Hezbollah and Israel have been escalating cross-border strikes for weeks. After rocket attacks caused massive fires in the north of the country, Israel last week killed commander Taleb Abdullah, the most senior official killed in the fighting. Hezbollah responded with unprecedented rocket barrages on northern Israel. Israeli Ynet news site reported that an anonymous "senior Israeli government official" told the news outlet that "if Hezbollah continues to attack Israel, southern Lebanon will look like Gaza. Beirut will not be immune." CBS News reported that US officials were also increasingly concerned that an all-out war could break out and had sent Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to US President Joe Biden to try to negotiate a calm however reports indicate his mission has failed. Hezbollah has been attacking Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis since October 8, which it says it's doing in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, amid the war started by ally Hamas's terror onslaught. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah threatened an invasion of Israel's Galilee region and an attack on Cyprus during a televised address on Wednesday concerning the terror group's war against the Jewish state. It marked the first time that the Iranian proxy steeped in Lebanon has directly threatened the Eastern Mediterranean island nation. Nasrallah said Cyprus would be considered "a part of the war" if Nicosia continued to allow Israel to use its airports and bases for military exercises. According to the Cyprus Mail, it is believed that the airports and bases refer to the Royal Air Force Akrotiri, a permanent military base that supports ongoing operations in the region and support for the Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus. "Opening Cypriot airports and bases to the Israeli enemy to target Lebanon would mean that the Cypriot government is part of the war, and the resistance will deal with it as part of the war," he said. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides responded to Nasrallah's threat, saying these "statements that do not reflect reality. Cyprus remains uninvolved in any military conflict, and positions itself as part of the solution--not as a problem," the Cyprus Mail reported. Nasrallah warned that Israel, not Hezbollah, should be fearful and that nowhere in Israel would be safe in the case of a wider war, which he said that Hezbollah is not seeking, with the terror army fighting with "no rules" and "no ceilings." On Tuesday, Hezbollah published video captured by a surveillance UAV of the Haifa Port, one of Israel's most important commercial shipping gateways. According to the Lebanese newspaper Elnashra, Hezbollah plans to attack Haifa if Israel expands the fighting and, in the next stage, additional cities, including Tel Aviv. "It is not by chance that Haifa was included in the equation of the war currently being waged in southern Lebanon," the Lebanese media outlet stated. "This city has been marked by Hezbollah as a target in the event of an expansion of the war. If the Israelis enter into large-scale military confrontations... in the area south and north of Litani, Haifa will be a legitimate target for Hezbollah." "Strategic, military, and civilian facilities were scanned, continuing the equation drawn by Hezbollah that destruction will be met with destruction, and civilian casualties will be met with civilian casualties," Elnashra wrote. "The drone also scanned a military-industrial facility belonging to Rafael, which is the most dangerous thing the video contained for the Israelis." Sources quoted in the newspaper warned Israel that Hezbollah has precision missiles capable of hitting these targets. "The footage was evidence for the Israelis that Hezbollah holds a database of strategic Israeli targets," the sources warned. The sources cited in Elnashra presented a possible scenario for the first days of the war, during which Haifa and Tel Aviv would be attacked. "If Israel makes a decision to expand the war in the south or launch a major military operation in the south, Hezbollah will respond according to the level of escalation, and the vital area in Haifa will be targeted with conventional missiles. To distract the defense systems, the organization will simultaneously attack targets related to the Iron Dome and David's Sling. Israel's air defense will be exposed to direct hits, as has happened before. In the next stage, Hezbollah will launch dozens of precision missiles carrying large warheads at specific targets in and around Haifa port." Today, they own more than 300,000 acres of farmland inside the United States, and they have been specifically targeting areas that are located near important military bases. As you will see below, the Chinese now own farmland very close to 19 different U.S. military bases. How in the world could our leaders have allowed this to happen? Foreign adversaries should not be allowed to purchase farmland at all, and yet somehow they have been able to acquire land that is ideal for spying on our military bases over and over again. In fact, the New York Post has “identified 19 bases across the US from Florida to Hawaii which are in close proximity to land bought up by Chinese entities”… China has been buying up strategically placed farmland next to military installations across the US, raising national security fears over potential espionage or even sabotage. When I read stuff like that, it makes me want to tear my hair out. Are the people that are in charge of our national security really this incompetent? According to the New York Post, the list includes some of our “most strategically important bases”… They include some of the military’s most strategically important bases: Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in Fayetteville, North Carolina; Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) in Killeen, Texas; Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California, and MacDill air force base in Tampa, Florida. We know that the Chinese are very interested in our military bases. Do you remember the Chinese spy balloon that was allowed to fly over our country? The path that it took allowed it to gather intelligence on Malmstrom Air Force Base, which is where some of our key nuclear assets are located. And the Wall Street Journal has reported that Chinese nationals have been caught accessing “military bases and other sensitive sites” inside the United States close to 100 times… Chinese nationals, sometimes posing as tourists, have accessed military bases and other sensitive sites in the U.S. as many as 100 times in recent years, according to U.S. officials, who describe the incidents as a potential espionage threat. The Defense Department, FBI and other agencies held a review last year to try to limit these incidents, which involve people whom officials have dubbed gate-crashers because of their attempts—either by accident or intentionally—to get onto U.S. military bases and other installations without proper authorization. They range from Chinese nationals found crossing into a U.S. missile range in New Mexico to what appeared to be scuba divers swimming in murky waters near a U.S. government rocket-launch site in Florida. Look, everyone knows that the Chinese are trying to spy on us. That isn’t a big secret. Just don’t make it easy for them. At the same time all of this spying is going on, there has been an unprecedented surge in Chinese migrants coming across the southern border… US border officials said they detained 37,000 Chinese migrants attempting to cross the border in 2023, or 10 times the number detained in the year before. The true number of those attempting to cross the border is likely higher. The flow of Chinese migrants continued to surge in 2024, with CBS reporting in February that it observed 600 migrants, many of whom were Chinese, entering the US in a single day. The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability said in May that the number of Chinese nationals encountered by authorities at the US border in March had jumped 8,000% from the same period in 2021. Most of the Chinese migrants that are coming across the southern border are men of military age, and they commonly travel to the border in groups. Suspiciously, these groups of military age Chinese men are often decked out in matching equipment. But they are let into the country anyway, because that is what our leaders have decided to do. So now we have tens of thousands of military age “Chinese migrants” that are running around inside our country, and we have no idea where they are or what they are doing. The Chinese are preparing to win a war, and we are preparing to lose one. At this point, everyone realizes that the Chinese are going to invade Taiwan eventually. In fact, the Daily Mail ran a big story about the coming invasion this week… Xi Jinping views Taiwan as a breakaway Chinese province and has vowed to ‘reunify’ it with the mainland, by force if necessary. He is in the midst of a huge military buildup, regularly sending fighter jets and warships to harass Taiwan, and staging menacing war games in the area. When Taiwan is invaded, the U.S. military will be expected to intervene, and then we will be at war with China… Taiwan views itself as independent of Beijing and is allied to America – a legacy that stretches back to the Chinese Civil War 75 years ago. America supplies the islands with weapons and is expected to go to war to defend them if they are attacked. By most estimates, a war over Taiwan would be one of the biggest, bloodiest, and most expensive in history. Most people don’t realize this, but China and the Philippines are also on the verge of military conflict. Recently, there was a very alarming clash in the South China Sea that resulted in one Filipino soldier losing a thumb… Filipino soldiers had to defend themselves with bare hands against Chinese coast guard armed with swords and knives, according to the Philippines. General Romeo Brawner, the Philippines’ top military commander, criticized China for what he described as “reckless and aggressive” behavior while the Philippines navy and coast guard were delivering supplies to Filipino soldiers in the disputed South China Sea on Monday. Chinese coast guard personnel rammed their vessels into boats belonging to the Philippines, and boarded and attacked them, the BBC reported Brawner as saying, leaving some injured and one soldier having lost a thumb. The Chinese have become extremely aggressive, and it is just a matter of time before we are at war with them. But even though many of our leaders publicly talk about the coming war, we are still allowing the Chinese to take advantage of us in unthinkable ways. We should have never allowed the Chinese to purchase large tracts of farmland near 19 of our most important military bases. Unfortunately, they are there now, and that will give them a major advantage when war finally erupts. I was a Junior in high school when I discovered the song “Wildfire” by Michael Martin Murphey. My youngest sister was 7 years old at the time. It’s kind of a sad song, and my sister is the sensitive type who has a deep love for animals. So, I thought I would introduce her to this song. It’s a song about a girl who comes down from Yellow Mountain riding a pony named Wildfire on a cold Nebraska night. “Oh, they say she died one winter when there came a killing frost. And the pony she named Wildfire busted down its stall. In a blizzard, she was lost.” I would sing this to her, emphasizing the sad bits. That’s when my sister would break down and cry. Told you I was rotten. That was about the extent of my experience with horses; a sad song. But that is changing. I’ve recently signed up to volunteer with an organization that provides options and new hope for young people struggling with mental health challenges by connecting them to employment opportunities on farms, ranches, stables, and therapeutic riding facilities. I have a lot to learn about horse handling as a supervisor working with these at-risk youth! They are just beautiful creatures, each with their own personalities. There are 15 currently on the ranch I’m helping, and I’m learning that they want to be led, they want a job to do each day, and they are just sweet with humans but can be grouchy with each other sometimes. They mirror the emotions of humans and can sense our heartbeats from 4 feet away. That’s why they are excellent therapeutic animals. I understand that people who grew up with horses absolutely love them and can’t get enough of them. This got me to thinking about horses and their connection to the Bible. Turns out there are over 150 mentions of the horse or horse family! As you may know, the world was heavily reliant on the horse for daily transportation and in war, up until only about 130 years ago. The last war they were used in was WWI. Horses are mentioned throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. We see horses mentioned as symbols of strength and instruments of war. I thought I would reveal what has stuck out the most from my research of the Bible and horses. They are first mentioned in Genesis 47 during the plague of 7 years in Egypt and the rest of the region. The Egyptians were required to trade in all their horses and livestock for grain to survive. In Exodus 9, we see that most of Egypt’s horses are killed in the 5th plague because Pharoh wouldn’t let Moses’ people go. This eventually concludes with Pharoh and all his horses with chariots drowning in the Red Sea. My, how horses have suffered due to man’s sin. In Numbers 22, we are introduced to a talking donkey. The prophet Balaam continues to defy God and attempts to curse the Israelites at the insistence of the King of Moab with no satisfaction. On one of these attempts, Balaam is riding the donkey he’s had all his life. God places the Angel of the Lord in the path to the next location to attempt the curse. God first enables the donkey to see the Angel and moves to and fro to avoid it, while Balaam becomes angry with his donkey for not following his directions, beating it 3 times. The donkey has had enough, and God now enables the donkey to give lip to Balaam about his beatings, lol. You can’t make this stuff up. And we are quite familiar with Zechariah’s prophecy (9:9) that one day a King will humbly ride into Jerusalem on a lowly donkey – then being fulfilled approximately 500 years later by our Messiah in Matthew 24. Two of my favorite Old Testament references to horses in the Bible are of the supernatural type. The account of Elijah taken off to Heaven in a whirlwind in a fiery chariot and horses (2 Kings 2) and of Elisha and his servant being protected by “invisible” fiery chariots and horses from the King of Aram (2 Kings 6). You start to get the sense that God has a deeper purpose for the horse than for other animals of His creation. Also, God’s word provides amazing details of the “last days” that involve the horse. Eschatology students and teachers are very familiar with the soon-coming war of Gog and Magog – Ezekiel 38/39. Did you notice that this war only involves horses as the instruments of the war? And Revelation 9 describes a 200-million-man army with horses beautifully outfitted for war that will result in the loss of a third of mankind. No one can really provide a certain explanation as to why these wars are described with horses instead of modern instruments of war. Fact is, Ezekiel and John both described horses in their visions. Oh my, more carnage of horses to come due to man’s sin. How sad. But the last word concerning the horse is the best. Revelation 19: “Next I saw Heaven opened, and there before me was a white horse. Sitting on it was the one called Faithful and True… The armies of heaven clothed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses” (vv 11, 14). I conjecture that Jesus not only has prepared a place for us but will also be giving us each a horse, a white horse. I confess that I have never given much thought to that piece about white horses ridden by the armies of heaven. But I do now. I wonder what kind of personality my horse will have. Will I have to pick its hooves, brush its body, muck its stall, or saddle its back? I’m guessing not. I picture myself jumping on its bare back and flying down the road and through the air in unbelievable ways. Brothers and sisters, it’s time to imagine the incomprehensible. Don’t you sense that it’s just around the corner? One last word on the horse in the Bible. It’s a beautiful description from Job. God asks Job a rhetorical question near the end of their discussion. He provides an incredible description of His creation. I don’t think there’s a more described animal in the Bible than here. Job 39:19-25 “Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. At the blast of the trumpet it snorts, ‘Aha!’ It catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry.” There is soon coming a day when there is no more war. These creatures will no longer be used as instruments of war. All their beauty and strength will be used as God first intended, for travel and joy. If you’re not a horse person like me, I invite you to learn more about them. I become more enchanted with each encounter. If you are trusting in Jesus as your Savior, you will be getting one soon. If you are not trusting in Jesus as your Savior, your first priority is to search for Him and then place your faith in Him (Romans 10:9-10). Time is getting very short. I’ve asked my sister (and other siblings) to forgive me for my teasing ways of old. Praise God, they have forgiven me. However, my ultimate payback may be coming. If one of our 15 or so horses dies while I am involved with this organization, I will be the one who breaks down crying for Wildfire, or whichever horse it may be. Come, Lord Jesus! [email protected] Daily Jot: The American Chronicles: Main Street and the River - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com The headlines any day of the week would make you think that all of America is at each other’s throats. It’s simply not the case. Throughout our travels, we have met a lot of people who are friendly, god-fearing, family-oriented and pet-loving. They work hard for a living and want to live their lives in peace. We have found this even outside of the most political place in the nation—Washington, DC. Not far from the nation’s capitol is a small town, Front Royal, Va. It’s historic Main Street is really a picture of many Main Streets, and not far is the Shenandoah River. This is a place where one can experience a slice of American hospitality and the rugged beauty of the outdoors, a formula for rest and relaxation. Chris, Service Dog Charlie and I arrived in Front Royal around lunch time. We decided to parallel park our RV at the far end of Main Street by the old Proctor Biggs Feed Mill. The mill is now a restaurant and we thought to take a walk through town and end up back at the feed mill to, well, feed ourselves. The walk down Main Street featured a lot of nice shops and stores. Dusty’s Country Store, for example, had a little bit of everything. Chris got some Black Cherry Honey to try. I ended up with a really big chocolate peanut butter cup. They even had dog treats for Charlie. We passed a couple of coffee shops and restaurants. Later, I found out that a high school classmate of mine lives near Front Royal and she recommended Element, a restaurant that we tried on our second day. It was excellent. A little later, we met Daniel Elliott, owner of Front Royal Wines. He had started the shop around when everything got shut down with COVID. But he persisted and survived. He has a great selection of wines as well as chocolates. We found a bottle of Israeli cabernet sauvignon that paired great with my home-made cigars sitting along the Shenandoah River at our campsite. Daniel truly represents the entrepreneurial spirit that makes this country great. Back at the RV, we fed Charlie and then went to lunch at the feed mill. Good food and friendly people. Charlie is a social magnet. Everywhere he goes, people want to make over him. A lady in the booth next to us was having a business meeting with a client and she was slipping Charlie food. We ran into her several times during our two visits to Main Street—such as it is in small towns. Low Water Bridge Campground is an absolute treasure off the beaten path. We had a campsite right on the river bank of the scenic Shenandoah. This is a real campground. Yes, we had electric hookup, but other than that we were camping without the normal amenities you find at fancier places. Even so, this campground rates among the best where we have stayed. People were really friendly, many of them tent campers. And the beauty of the river was all around us. It was the perfect place to wind down and relax. King Solomon wrote that every person should eat, drink and enjoy the good of his labor because it is a blessing from God. Certainly, being able to live in a country like America, visit places like the Shenandoah Valley, and engage with salt-of-the-earth people is a tremendous blessing. Even Charlie thinks so! You will know very quickly. It will sort itself out right before your eyes. In fact, you will have to ask yourself whether someone who turns against you for your faith in Christ is a real friend. Saul, who later became the apostle Paul, found out quickly who his true friends and enemies were. Acts 9:23–24 tells us, “After a while some of the Jews plotted together to kill him. They were watching for him day and night at the city gate so they could murder him, but Saul was told about their plot” (NLT). The writer of Acts goes on to say that some believers in Damascus came to Saul’s aid when there were threats against him: “During the night, some of the other believers lowered him in a large basket through an opening in the city wall” (verse 25 NLT). Talk about a change in events. Saul had gone to Damascus with an entourage, intent on killing Christians. And he left Damascus lowered in a basket by the very believers he had come to kill. What a difference a day makes. Afterward Saul returned to Jerusalem, the very place where he had presided over the martyrdom of Stephen. Did he receive a hero’s welcome from his fellow believers? Did they hear the news of his conversion in Damascus and say, “The notorious Christian killer, Saul, is one of us now. Let’s welcome him”? No. They didn’t even believe he was converted. Acts 9:26 says, “When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he had truly become a believer” (NLT). That is where Barnabas came in. Apparently, he had some credibility with the apostles, because the next verse tells us, “Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus” (verse 27 NLT). When Barnabas said it, they seemed to accept it. He put it all on the line and backed Saul’s story because it was true. The name Barnabas means “son of encouragement,” and we need more people like Barnabas today. They’re always encouraging you, no matter what you’re going through. If you call or text them, they consistently have an uplifting word. Then there are others who are the sons of discouragement. They always have something negative to say. They’re always critical. Perhaps we need them in life too. But we need a lot more Barnabases, people who know how to lift us up, people who know how to comfort us, people who know how to motivate us. That is what Barnabas did for Saul. And that is what we need to do for new believers. They need someone who will stand with them and love them.
