The Last Days and Preparing to Meet the Lord, Part 2
- By Sean Gooding - https://www.raptureready.com/2019/11/22/last-days-preparing-meet-lord-part-2-sean-gooding/ Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy is he who keeps the law." By now, I hope that we have established that the above verse is about the proper teaching and preaching of God's Holy Word. Even just reading the scriptures is so important, that the Devil will tempt you not to read because you don't understand. I had a conversation with a lady from the church I pastor this morning. She was talking about reading in the book of Luke. As she was about to read, the devil comes along and tells her, 'you don't understand this anyway; don't read it.' But she perseveres; and lo and behold, the Holy Spirit teaches her about producing fruit from a parable of Jesus' in Luke 13:6-9. She, by the power of the Holy Spirit, was challenged to work at producing more fruit in her Christian life. This is why it is important to read the Bible and to allow God's Holy Spirit that lives in us to show us the truth of the scriptures. The Holy Spirit always leads us into truth, to obedience and to change. He ever lives to guide us into a deeper and more open relationship with the Lord. We have shown and the scripture teaches that when the Word of God is read, preached and made available to the masses, it acts as a restraint against the progress of evil in a society. This is not just about Christians per se, but all peoples are restrained by the proper teaching and ready access to the Bible. This why there is such a push to remove the Bible from the public forum. Here in the Toronto area, we have a situation where a member of the Toronto city council is trying to make it either very difficult or impossible for a church group to rent a city facility to host a church service. The push to remove the truth from the public is very, very real. You see, it is impossible to lie to people who know the truth. It is like knowing authentic currency and then coming across counterfeit currency and being able to identify it. When we have the truth of God's word openly taught, openly and readily available to the public for consumption, then when lies come along, one is able to spot them and avoid them. Let us take a look at a phenomenon that is happening right now; we see it in the malls, in the stores, we see it in classrooms and in very public places. Exodus 20: 12, "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." I was taught this as a child. I am commanded from the Ten Commandments to 'honor' my parents. To respect them, to carry their names well and to listen to them. In the New Testament, we see Ephesians 6: 1-3, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth." This adds fuel to the fire by further explaining the idea of honoring your parents. We are called to obey our parents in the Lord. I am to do what I am told. This implies submission and humility. But today we have a society that encourages kids to disobey their parents. The government has gone behind parents' backs and provided to their children things that the parents have not consented to. Children can get contraceptives and vaccinations that the parents forbid by going around their parent's authority through the schools. It happened to my wife and I as parents; we found out that our kids could and did get stuff at the school that we had forbidden. There is a deliberate plan to subvert the parental authority. Many of the child protection agencies, both in the US and in Canada, have the position that the children belong to the state, not the parents. Thus, the state can subvert the parent's authority. They can only do this because the idea that children must obey their parents and the fact that the children belong to the parents has been removed out of the public sphere. Children used to be taught, even in public schools, that they should obey their parents. I was. Now they are told that they can threaten their parents if they do something that they, the child, does not like. The entire chain of authority has been overturned. Now, we have a society of unruly, undisciplined kids that have been unleashed on our teachers, our police forces and our society. The children have 'cast off restraint' since there is no revelation of the truth. Further, we discussed some verses from Timothy, verses of instruction and clarity to the young preacher about the power of the Holy Word of God. In 2 Timothy 3: 16-17, we see these verses: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." The Word of God is profitable. This is very important. The world system says that the Word of God is outdated, no longer relevant; but God says it is profitable. We talked in the previous lessons about doctrine and reproof, and we have begun to talk about good works; and we will get there today as well. But if you do not think that the Word of God is profitable, then there is no desire to read it, to study it and to obey it. So, our very mind frame must be in line with the mind frame of God. Just like the lady I mentioned from this morning, she had the mindset that the Word of God is profitable; thus, when tempted not to read, she was able to resist the temptation, and God made the reading of the Book profitable to her. I am amazed at how many of God's people do not make even the reading of God's Word a priority. I am not perfect, far from it, but if I go a day or so without reading the scriptures, and sadly it can happen, I get the Holy Spirit in me calling me out on it; and then I repent and read it. The Bible is profitable and valuable; it is God's message to us, to mature us and mold us into the image of Jesus. How do you view the Holy Word of God? Since the resurrection of the nation of Israel in May 1948, we have been in the last days. We have seen the rise of the New World Order as a system that is subverting the sovereignty of nations, infiltrating religion and exposing compromise, trying to silence or squash true Godly churches and trying to unify the world under global strategies. Soon, either by death or by the Rapture, we are going to be giving an account of the fruit that we have produced in the life we lived after we were saved. Last week we began to look at Romans 12:1-2 in conjunction with Proverbs 29:18 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17. We talked about giving ourselves as living sacrifices to the Lord, and we examined verses like this in Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Or this one from the Gospel of Luke, Luke 9:23: "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." These are powerful and profitable verses that remind us that God wants us to surrender our lives. There are many who think that they would die for Jesus. But most are not living for Him. If you are not willing to be a living sacrifice, you will not be a dead one. All the people who died for the cause of Jesus Christ, first lived for Him. Today we will explore the second part of Romans 12:1-2. Let us be reminded of the verses at hand: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Once we have made the decision to present our bodies to Jesus for His use, we are then instructed to 'not be conformed to this world.' Have any of you ever made frozen lollies? You make a juice of some kind, then you pour the liquid into the molds, place a stick in them and let them freeze. The juice takes on the shape of whatever mold you put it in. The idea of being conformed is the same thing. But this is not really a physical thing; it is the mind that we are to work on. Notice that, in the next phrase, the transformation take place by the 'renewing of the mind.' In 1 Peter 1:15-16 we see this: "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" As well, see 2 Corinthians 6:16-17: "What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: 'I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people. Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.'" When we think of being holy, there is an idea of being pious. Most often, that is seen in a negative connotation. But God is Holy; the word really means separated. God is separated from us; He is perfect, first of all, and this separates us, so we need to be saved through Jesus. And when we are covered in Jesus' holiness, we can fellowship with God; He is no longer separated from us. But in a practical sense, God's wants our way of thinking and subsequently acting to be separated from the world; we are called to be Holy. Our thoughts, our opinions and our very framework for life should be solely based on the Word of God. Many Christians want to transform the way they act, but actions are a symptom, not a cause. First, we must change the way we think. We must stop conforming to the thought processes of the world. Let me give an example: The world teaches that a man and woman can live together without going through a marriage process; it is all the same. But it is not; God expects there to be a marriage ceremony of some kind. Whether big or small, civil or religious, there must be a ceremony of some kind and the legal acknowledgement that they are now one person. So, a saved person who is in a relationship must reject the mindset of the world and accept God's mindset. A young person who is being taught at school that they do not have to submit and obey Mom and Dad, must suppress these ideas with the truth of God's word and not conform to the world philosophy. Once we have decided to surrender our bodies, the next step is to work on not conforming to the world system. This takes self-examination; you and I need to ask questions? What does God say about this topic? What does the Bible teach about this situation? How would God have me handle this? From time management, money management, how we exist in our marriages, raise our children, what friends we have, the church we attend, and on and on we go. What must I do to stop conforming to the world? Once you make the move, the Holy Spirit will step in and assist you. He is here to guide us into all truth, thus helping us to conform to God's holiness and not the world system. See John 16: 13-14: "However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you." Notice it says "He will guide you into all truth." You and I must be willing to follow. Now we have surrendered our bodies; and as we are no longer conforming to the world, but conforming to the Word of God, we can begin the process of doing good works in our service to the Lord and be ready to face the judgment that for sure is coming our way. [email protected] Trump and Netanyahu: Both Being Investigated for Made-Up Crimes - by Alan M. Dershowitz - https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/15217/trump-netanyahu-impeachment-indictment There are striking similarities, as well as important differences, between the investigations being conducted against American President Donald J. Trump by the US Congress, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was just indicted. The most striking similarity is that both are being investigated for actions that their legislatures have not explicitly made criminal. Moreover, no legislature in any country governed by the rule of law would ever enact a general statute criminalizing such conduct. The investigations of these two controversial leaders are based on using general laws that have never previously been deemed to apply to the conduct at issue and stretching them to target specific political figures. Netanyahu has been indicted for bribery on the ground that he allegedly agreed to help a media company in exchange for more positive coverage and/or less negative coverage. There are disputes about the facts, but even if they are viewed in the light least favorable to Netanyahu, they do not constitute the crime of bribery. Nor would the Knesset ever enact a statute making it a crime for a member of Knesset to cast a vote in order to get good media coverage. If such a law was ever passed, the entire Knesset would be in prison. Politicians always seek good coverage and many vote with that in mind. Some even negotiate good coverage in advance of voting. That is why they have press secretaries and media consultants. Nor could a reasonable statute be drafted that covered Netanyahu's alleged conduct, but not that of other Knesset members who bartered their votes for good coverage. That is why no legislature in a country governed by the rule of law has ever made positive media coverage the "quid" or "quo" necessary for a bribery conviction, and that is why the bribery indictment of Netanyahu should not be upheld by the courts. Upholding a conviction based on positive media coverage would endanger both the freedom of the press and democratic processes of governance. Prosecutors should stay out of the interactions between politicians and the media unless specifically defined crimes, as distinguished from arguable political sins, are committed, and no one should ever be prosecuted for actions that were never made criminal, and would never be made criminal, by the legislature. President Trump is also being investigated for alleged bribery. Originally the Democrats thought they could impeach him for non-criminal conduct, such as alleged maladministration, abuse of office or immoral conduct. I think they have now been convinced by me and others that no impeachment would be constitutional unless the President were found guilty of the crimes specified in the Constitution, namely, "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors." So the Democratic leadership has now settled on bribery as an offence for which they can impeach President Trump. The problem with that approach -- similar to the problem with the Israeli approach against Netanyahu -- is that it is simply not a crime for a President to use his power over foreign policy for political, partisan or even personal advantage. Imagine Congress trying to pass a law defining what would constitute a criminal abuse of the foreign policy power, as distinguished from a political or moral abuse. Presidents have even engaged in military actions for political gain. They have given aid to foreign countries to help themselves get elected. They have appointed ambassadors based not on competence but on past and anticipated future political contributions. None of these has ever been deemed criminal, and Congress would never dream of enacting a criminal statute that sought to cover such conduct. Could it carve out a specific crime based on seeking personal political advantage rather than partisan political advantage? I doubt it. But even if it could parse such a statute, it has not done so. And if it has not done so, neither Congress nor prosecutors can seek to criminalize the exercise of a President's foreign policy power on the ground that they do not like the way he used it or even if he abused it. The central aspect of the rule of law is that no one may be investigated, prosecuted or impeached unless his conduct violates pre-existing and unambiguous prohibitions. Neither Congress nor prosecutors can make it up as they go along, because they, too, are not above the law. Now to the differences. Israel is a parliamentary democracy in which the Prime Minister can be removed by a simple vote of no confidence. There is no requirement of, or need for, an impeachment mechanism. The United States, on the other hand, is a Republic with separation of powers and checks and balances. The Framers, led by James Madison, saw the impeachment power as central to preserving our Republic and not turning it into a parliamentary democracy. That is why they rejected a proposal that would have permitted impeachment on the ground of "maladministration." Such an open-ended criteria, according to Madison, would have resulted in a situation in which the President served at the will of Congress. That is why Madison insisted on the specific criteria for impeachment that the Framers ultimately accepted. Although the differences between Israel and the United States are significant, they share in common the rule of law. Under the rule of law, properly applied, neither Netanyahu nor Trump should be deemed guilty of bribery. Nearing Midnight: When Bert and Ernie Go Gay, All Is Lost - Todd Strandberg - https://www.raptureready.com/category/nearing-midnight/ I absolutely hate the leftist term progressivism. As a philosophy, it is based on the idea of progress, which asserts that advancements in science, technology, economic development and social organization are vital to the improvement of the human condition. In reality, it's the same debaucheries that have destroyed many previously great empires. Our society has been progressing on the sexual revolution for several decades. We never arrived at a state of tranquility because lust leaves a void that can never be filled. Temporary satisfaction can only be achieved by going from one vice to another. About a year ago, former Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman said he had written scripts thinking of Bert and Ernie as a gay couple. The fixation to make these two characters homosexual lovers dates back to the beginning of the show. But in response, Sesame Workshop said that "Bert and Ernie are best friends" and that even though they have human characteristics, "they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation." This children's program has a history of introducing new muppets that reflect the current liberal culture. I remember they had one muppet that was homeless, another one came from a broken home, and recently they had one with a family member that had a drug problem. The only reason why Bert and Ernie are sleeping in separate beds is that Sesame Street executives know that parents would currently go ballistic if they made such a move now. A poll from my birth state of Iowa shows how rapidly moral standards are changing. Pete Buttigieg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is 9 points ahead of the four other leading Democratic presidential candidates. It's not that he is an openly gay mayor that is remarkable. What is stunning is that we've reached the point where a candidate's sexuality is no longer a factor. The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A has been a favorite target of the left. After what one company executive called "years of taking it on the chin," referring to the decades of hectoring leveled at the firm by gay activists, the press, and cities and universities with a liberal bias, the chain announced its decision to withdraw support from Christian charities with traditional Christian views on human sexuality. Beginning next year, Chick-fil-A will move away from its current philanthropic structure. After donating to more than 300 charitable organizations this year, the Atlanta-based fast-food chain will instead focus on three initiatives with one accompanying charity each: education, homelessness and hunger. The motivation for Chick-fil-A's announcement has it come out the resounding loser in what the liberal media has labeled the chicken-sandwich war. For several years, the press has promoted chicken products from various other fast-food chains. When Popeyes came out with a sandwich that could match the quality of the one sold by Chick-fil-A, the liberal media acted like Popeyes had just discovered a cure for cancer. I think the change in Chick-fil-A's donation plan is a huge mistake. The company had already done this several years ago. The new philanthropic policy appears to be strictly secular to avoid supporting any Christian organization that may have a sexual view that the left can disagree with. Chick-fil-A is still under attack because the LGBTQ people need an enemy to make into a scapegoat. No amount of public display of contrition will ever suffice. Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), for instance, expressed predictable dissatisfaction with Chick-fil-A's gesture. The organization's director of campaigns, Drew Anderson, released a statement noting that, while the company has stopped "financially supporting anti-LGBTQ organizations, Chick-Fil-A still lacks policies to ensure safe workplaces for LGBTQ employees and should unequivocally speak out against the anti-LGBTQ reputation that their brand represents." A key problem with the LGBTQ agenda is that there is no way for believers to make peace with this movement. The folks at GLAAD will never be happy until all companies renounce their Christian heritage. If Pete Buttigieg became president, he would demand that Bert and Ernie get married, and he would pressure Chick-Fil-A to fly the rainbow flag. "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet" (Rom. 1:26-27). Thanksgiving - 2019 - By Hal Lindsey - https://www.hallindsey.com/ww-11-26-2019/ In America, it's the season of Thanksgiving. And there is much to be thankful for. We are blessed spiritually, materially, and economically. We can still speak our minds, worship as we see fit, gather together in a cause, and vote. Our liberties have been infringed on, but not exhausted. We have a great military and amazing first responders. With their help, we live in a time of peace and security. God has been gracious to this country. The Mayflower was a small ship - just under 100 feet from the bow to the tip of her stern. At her widest point, she measured about 25 feet. In September of 1620, she carried 102 passengers and a crew of 30 from England to America. The journey took more than two months. During the winter that followed, half of the passengers and crew died. In the fall of 1621, they celebrated America's first Thanksgiving. Edward Winslow wrote to a friend in England. "And God be praised, we had a good increase. Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling so we might after a special manner rejoice together.... These things I thought good to let you understand... that you might on our behalf give God thanks who hath dealt so favorably with us." Men sent "fowling" means their celebratory meal almost certainly included turkey. But what I find amazing is that, after so much pain, hardship and sorrow, they remained full of thankfulness. "God be praised," he wrote. And, "give God thanks who hath dealt so favorably with us." With all their deprivations, and with all our comforts, are we as thankful today as they were then? They had one great advantage over us. They were morally fit and strong, and Americans today tend toward moral flabbiness. We need to understand that their moral fitness led to our material prosperity. While our moral flabbiness will, unless we repent, lead to hardship. We already see cracks in America's greatness. Extreme partisan rancor continues in Washington and has spilled over into much of the country. It has touched families, workplaces, schools, and even churches. Israel remains America's greatest ally in the Middle East. And that nation is going through a time of severe testing. Israel faces unprecedented challenges from Iran, Hezbollah, Syria, Hamas, Turkey, and Russia. Just when they need strong leadership the most, they are in the midst of a major leadership crisis. They have already held two elections this year and neither led to the formation of a government. It now looks like a third election may be necessary. Complicating all of this, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now officially under indictment. We knew it was coming. In fact, it is a major reason Netanyahu has been unable to put together a governing coalition. Yet, in all these trials, Israel will be preserved. It won't be by politics or missiles, but by the hand of God. God cares for you, too. No matter what you're facing this Thanksgiving, you can face it with Jesus at your side. And so, you can face it with thankfulness and joy. Philippians 4:6-7 stands as one of the Bible's great thanksgiving passages. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Daily Jot: Of Truth and Thanksgiving - Bill Wilson - www.dailyjot.com Note: I want to share with you some of my heritage which has become part of the heritage of America. My grandfather 13 generations back was William Bradford, co-writer of the Mayflower Compact, inventor of the free market system, and governor of the Plymouth colony for over 30 years. I would like to share some insights of and from his writings in "Of Plymouth Plantation." In the days leading up to the first "Thanksgiving" of the Pilgrims, they had dispatched a group of ten men to "explore the bay and trade with the natives." They were guided by the English speaking Squanto, who also served as an interpreter. When the men returned, they were very impressed with the land around the bay and wished they could have settled there instead of Cape Cod. William Bradford, wrote however, "But it seems that the Lord, Who assigns to all men the bounds of their habitations, had appointed it for another use. And thus they found the Lord to be with them in all their ways, and to bless their outgoings and incomings, for which let His holy name have the praise forever, to all posterity." This "Thanksgiving" to the Lord offered by Bradford in his history "Of Plymouth Plantation" indicates that Jesus was at the center of his thoughts about all things--even the land they were allocated by God to begin their colony. It also forebears testimony to the very positive Christian witness and relations the Pilgrims maintained with the Indians. This comment was followed immediately by Bradford's account of the harvest in October 1621. Bradford writes, "Each person had about a peck of meal a week, or now since harvest, Indian corn in that proportion; and afterwards many wrote at length about their plenty to their friends in England--not feigned but true reports." One of those true reports is found in "Mourt's Relation" by Pilgrim Edward Winslow--the only account of the first "Thanksgiving." Winslow writes: "our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors...at which time amongst other recreations, we exercised our Arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoyt, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others." Winslow concluded, "And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty." Thanks to the godly men and women who came before us, even in our decline we remain blessed more than any other nation on earth. Jeremiah 4:2 says that if God's people return to Him, "And thou shalt swear, The Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in Him, and in Him shall they glory." This is a promise to the nations. So today, as should be our practice each day, may you have a Psalm 103:2 day, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." Daily Devotion: Gratitude Exemplified - by Greg Laurie - www.harvest.org And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.-Deuteronomy 8:18 I love it when I see a family in a restaurant pause and bow their heads in prayer before a meal. I think it's a good witness. (By the way, if you pray publicly in a restaurant, please don't be a cheapskate. Leave a tip.) The simple act of saying grace over a meal is a great way to show our thankfulness to God. And here's something you may not realize: Jesus gave thanks to the Father in prayer. Matthew 15 gives us this detail about the feeding of the four thousand: "So He [Jesus] commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude" (verses 35-36 NKJV). I find that amazing. Jesus gave thanks to the Father before they had their meal. He gave thanks for the necessities of life, like food. And if Jesus did it, should we not do the same? In what is known as the Lord's Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:9-11 NKJV). In other words, "Give me my daily necessities. Give me the food that I need to eat each and every day." By doing this, we're acknowledging that everything we have comes to us from God. God gave us our minds, our health, and our strength. He gave us the ability to do our jobs. God has given us everything we have. Understand that. When someone does something for you, it's common courtesy to say thank you. We should do the same with God. God wants us to give thanks.
