Babel: A Tower of Evidence – Joel - https://www.christianevidence.net/2023/03/evidence-for-tower-of-babel.html
The Tower of Babel account in Genesis 11:1-9 tells the story of a group of people who united in Babel, the first city established after Noah’s flood, to construct a tower in defiance of God. As a consequence, God confused their language and dispersed them throughout the world. Today, a towering body of evidence supports the historical accuracy of this account and challenges evolutionary theories on the origins of human civilization and language... The Tower of Babel: A Ziggurat The first evidence for the Babel account can be found in the detailed account of the Tower’s construction in Genesis 11:2-4, written by Moses about 3,500 years ago. This account reveals striking similarities to ancient Mesopotamian ziggurats, which were massive tiered towers or pyramids with multiple levels built on top of each other. For example:
The level of detail in these similarities is remarkable, given that ziggurats were built centuries before Moses’ time and in a region far from where he lived. It is highly unlikely that he was familiar enough with their construction to have accurately described them in such detail. This implies that Genesis 11 describes a real tower from early Mesopotamian history. The Tower was probably influenced by Mesopotamia’s impressive ziggurats and other monumental structures of the time and most likely inspired the construction of similar structures worldwide in the years following the event... Ziggurats Around the World It is a well-known fact that ziggurats and similar pyramid-style structures can be found in ancient civilizations all over the world, from Mesopotamia and Egypt to South America. Remarkably, these impressive structures share strikingly similar designs and construction techniques, despite being built by diverse cultures that were often separated by vast distances and had little or no contact with each other until recent historic times. While the similarities pose a challenge to evolutionary historians who believe that each culture devised the same style of building independently, they can be easily explained by the Babel account. It is more plausible to believe that the people who participated in the construction of the Tower carried the knowledge and skills required to build such structures as they dispersed worldwide, and that the existence of similar structures in regions where ziggurats were not previously constructed can be explained by a shared inspiration, such as the Tower. As an aside, it is worth mentioning that archaeologists studying ancient civilizations are often amazed or surprised by the high level of man’s skill in the distant past (see: Evidence for God: The Great Pyramid). According to one evolutionist researcher, “The transition from primitive to advanced society seems to have occurred so rapidly that it defies historical explanation.” However, their surprise is due to their preconceived notions of evolution that predispose them to anticipate evidence of “primitive” humans rather than intelligent beings created in God’s image. Similar Myths and Legends Around the World In addition to the pyramid-style structures found all over the world, many myths and legends also share striking similarities across different cultures. These commonalities are far too specific and abundant to be mere coincidences, including stories about creation, a global flood, giants who once roamed the earth, dragon-like creatures resembling dinosaurs, and more. Despite being distorted by time and countless retellings, the similarities between these stories not only lend further support to the Babel account but also provide independent corroboration of other historical events described in the Bible that would have been known to all people groups at one time. It is noteworthy that some of these stories were in circulation before the Bible was written and can even be found in cultures that had no prior exposure to Christianity or the Bible. Regardless, the differences between these stories are substantial enough to show that they were not simply copied from the biblical text or other historical sources. Language Complexity & Diversity The incredible complexity and diversity of over 7,000 human languages, which appear to have arisen relatively quickly in human history, are another testament to the Babel account and the creation timeline. The intricate grammar, morphology, phonetics, and syntax in ancient texts, such as Sumerian cuneiform and Egyptian hieroglyphs, indicate that human language emerged fully formed and complex. This is reinforced by linguistic observations, including:
While evolutionary linguistics posits that languages gradually evolve over vast periods of time through natural selection, starting with simple vocalizations and developing into complex grammatical systems, these observations contradict that notion. Instead, they are perfectly consistent with the biblical account of God confounding people’s languages at Babel around 4,200 years ago, leading to the creation of many distinct languages with shared roots and structures, all stemming from a complex language that already existed. The fact that no other species has demonstrated the ability to use language in the same way as humans is further evidence that language is a unique, God-given trait. Extra-Biblical Sources for the Tower The Babel account is also independently corroborated by multiple sources outside of the Bible. These sources include legends, historical accounts, and archaeological evidence. Legends Several legends from different parts of the world share similarities with the Babel account. For example, the Mikir tribe from Northeast India has a legend which states: “Higher and higher rose the building, till at last the gods and demons feared lest these giants should become the masters of heaven, as they already were of earth. So they confounded their speech, and scattered them to the four corners of the world. Hence arose all the various tongues of mankind.” Similarly, the Gaikho tribe from Southeast Asia recounts: “In the days of Pan-dan-man, the people determined to build a pagoda [tall tower] that should reach up to heaven...When the pagoda was half way up to heaven, God came down and confounded the language of the people, so that they could not understand each other. Then the people scattered...” (For more intriguing stories, check out Tongue-Twisting Tales.) Historical Accounts Even secular historians from ancient times confirm the historical occurrence of the events in the Babel account, albeit with slight variations due to differences in interpretation, language, and cultural context. Abydenus, who quoted Berossus, a Babylonian priest from the 3rd century B.C., related: “The first inhabitants of the earth, glorying in their own strength and size, and despising the gods, undertook to raise a tower whose top should reach the sky in the place where Babylon [Babel] now stands; but when it approached the heavens, the winds assisted the gods, and overthrew the work of the contrivers...and the gods introduced a diversity of tongues among men, who till that time had all spoken the same language...” Likewise, Polyhistor recorded the account of Eupolemus, a Jewish historian from the 2nd century B.C.: “Eupolemus in his book Concerning the Jews of Assyria says that the city Babylon was first founded by those who escaped from the Deluge [Flood]; and that they were giants, and built the tower renowned in history. But when this had been overthrown by the act of God, the giants were dispersed over the whole earth...” In addition to these accounts, other secular historians, including Josephus, Herodotus, Plato, Siculus, and the prophetesses Sybils, as well as dozens of ancient Jewish and Christian writings, also reference various aspects of the Babel account. Archaeological Evidence Although some may argue that certain aspects of the Babel account were included in the accounts of historians because it was a well-known story in the region, the discovery of two primary sources, ancient clay tablets containing Mesopotamian versions of the event, has put a damper on such claims. The first tablet, now in the British Museum and highly fragmentary, tells of the destruction of a building in Babel by a god who “confused or mixed” the speech of the builders, causing them to scatter. Interestingly, this Hebrew word, bālal, is also used in Genesis 11:7, 9. The second tablet, in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, contains an intact account of the incident and helps to locate where it might have occurred. It states: “In those days...the compass of heaven and earth the people entrusted could address [the god] Enlil, verily, in but a single tongue. In those days...the lord of Eridu estrange the tongues in their mouths as many as were put there. The tongues of men which were one.” The reference to Eridu, an ancient city situated in southern Mesopotamia, is particularly significant. Not only was Eridu also known as Babel, and the world’s first city, but archaeological evidence suggests that a tower or ziggurat was under construction in Eridu during that period but never completed. Moreover, a migration that began from this region, known as the Uruk Expansion, is consistent with the biblical account of the scattering of people after the confusion of tongues. See more: What is the Evidence for the Tower of Babel? It should be noted, however, that the exact location of the Tower has yet to be confirmed, and there are other archaeological sites in Mesopotamia with equally compelling evidence, such as an unexcavated mound near Turkey in Upper Mesopotamia. See: An Upper Mesopotamian location for Babel Conclusion The evidence overwhelmingly supports the historical accuracy of the Babel account, with the supernatural nature of the account further proving the existence of God. If you haven’t already done so, I invite you to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior today. He offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in Him (John 3:16). Learn more: Salvation Nearing Midnight: Has Time Run Out on Stopping Iran’s Nuclear Program? – Todd Strandberg - https://www.raptureready.com/category/nearing-midnight/ In late February, headlines appeared in most of the major news feeds that said Iran only needed to wait about 12 days before it would be able to make a nuclear bomb. Since that time has passed, the world can assume that Iran now has enough uranium 235 to build an atomic bomb. US officials have repeatedly estimated Iran’s breakout time – how long it would take to acquire the fissile material for one bomb. Earlier last year, various reports said we had one year, it was moved up to two months when Iran reported it had purified uranium to 80%, and now Iran likely has uranium that is 95% or better purity. Tehran continues to stockpile uranium enriched to up to 60% and install more advanced centrifuges, which enrich uranium more efficiently. The stockpiles of 60% uranium are particularly significant in assessing proliferation risk as material enriched to these levels can be much more quickly enriched to weapons grade. While US officials say Iran has grown closer to producing fissile material, they do not believe it has mastered the technology to actually build a bomb. This is a foolish statement because making a bomb for a uranium device is very simple. A high school shop class could make one. You put two sub-critical masses of 235 uranium at both ends of a gun barrel, and you slam them together with a high explosive charge. The US military was so confident that the Little Boy model would work, they never bothered to test one before bombing Hiroshima. When five nations came up with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal in 2015, at most, we could have bought us 10 more years before Iran would become a nuclear power. Because Iran cheated repeatedly on its nuclear production, doomsday has arrived two years early. Trump pulled out of the JCPOA when it became clear that Iran was just playing cat-and-mouse games with the nuclear inspectors. He placed the country under painful sanctions to slow its nuclear progress. There are so many benefits of being in the nuclear club, no sanction was going to convince Iran to freeze its nuclear program. Iran doesn’t need nuclear power to supply electricity to its growing population. It has a 100-year supply of oil and natural gas. The fact that uranium is being purified to bomb-grade level shows that peaceful power production cover story was a big fat lie. Building a nuclear power plant is several times more expensive than a fission-fuel electrical plant. We can live with an Iran that only has a handful of nukes. If Iran continues to ramp up production, it will quickly have enough to threaten its neighbor. Saudi Arabia may start their own nuclear program to provide a counterbalance to Iran. The only way to save the JCPOA is to have Iran lock up its nuclear weapons and never promise to use them. Once the next conflict comes along, Iran can pull the nukes out of storage and place them on the tips of missiles. A nuclear Iran is a very big concern for Israel. Iran has regular rallies that call for Israel’s destruction. Iran now has missiles that can reach all parts of the Jewish state. Since Israel is tiny, it would only take a few atomic bombs to wipe it off the map. Several Israeli prime ministers have promised that Iran will never be a nuclear power. I was looking for the day to come when Israeli jets would fly to Iran and heavily bomb their nuclear facilities. I hoped endlessly that Israel had some master plan in the works, but having reached this stage, it may just be the cold reality that there was never a way to take out centrifuges that are a thousand feet underground in a dozen locations. We must all pray for the protection of God’s people against a foe that seeks Israel’s demise. Now that Iran has one projected nuclear weapon, it can quickly produce more. Once it has a dozen or more, we would rapidly lose the ability to degrade its nuclear capabilities. The Iranians could launch an atomic strike on any major oil platform in the Middle East, and the price of oil would spike over $300 per barrel. In the late 90s, we had North Korea’s nuclear program under control. The nation had just suffered a horrible drought, so we arranged for them to get food and fuel in exchange for them to destroy their nuclear reactor. North Korea secretly built a new reactor and used our assistance to allow them the ability to produce nuclear weapons. Today, North Korea has about 60 atomic bombs, they are close to having hydrogen bombs, and they have missiles that can strike anywhere in the US. If we knew how bad it was going to get during the tribulation, we would probably choose to launch nuclear missiles at rouge nations like Iran and North Korea. Terry wrote on this subject last week, and he had a glimmer of hope that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might be able to do something. I think it’s simply too late. The making of a uranium fission bomb is based on 1940s technology. The only thing the Iranians lacked was the passage of time, and I am afraid time has now run out. “Why do the wicked live and become old, Yes, become mighty in power?” (Job 21:7). Lazarus and Rapture – Terry James - https://terryjamesprophecyline.com/2023/03/13/lazarus-and-rapture/ In thinking on the topics about which I write, I’m blessed to have close friends of spiritually infused intellect and insight who sometimes help inspire commentaries. We speak on the phone occasionally throughout any given week about various topics of possible Bible prophecy import. Thus it was in conversation this week when such a friend presented a fascinating matter that spawned the title you see above. My friend of many years is clued in to many things going on within cutting-edge technologies. As a matter of fact, he works closely within some of these technological stratospherics as consultant during various phases of development. At least that’s the take from my perspective. He tells no more than he can divulge in order to remain faithful to confidentiality. So, it is with great interest that I pay attention when he brings forth information of an unusual sort. I listen carefully when I sense he wants me to consider those insider developments in writing these articles meant to look into what’s going on while we obviously are closing in on the very end of the age. When we discuss things along these lines—well, when I mostly listen, because my thinking process can’t always quite engage due to complexity involved—my friend usually prefaces his comments with: “I don’t quite know what to do with this.” He then says something like: “But isn’t that interesting?” It usually most certainly at the very least interesting. More like somewhat mystifying and, on occasion, stupefying. The past week or so this friend wanted to give me a heads-up on something that had come to his attention that he thought I would find fascinating. He said his information came to him from a familiar intel channel/forum. It is obviously one he holds in high regard. The intel involves something called The Lazarus Project. My friend said someone, under the cloak of anonymity, posted, in part, the following on February 23, 2023. I’m a Meta insider working on Project Lazarus. We’re building an AI that can take over a deceased persons social media accounts and continue making relevant posts as if that person is still alive. This includes age progressed photos, interacting with other people’s content and everything else needed so that person continues on in the digital realm after physical death. We were originally told this would be a service offered to people struggling with the loss of loved ones and people who had missing children. Seemed like a decent idea. Things are getting weird now and I’m having second thoughts about what this is actually going to be used for. The AI is extremely capable of impersonating people. It doesn’t take as much initial input as one might think to train the AI how a certain person interacts with the digital world. It’s very convincing. An entire island of people could go missing and with little to no downtime the AI could take over all of their social media and the world wouldn’t have a clue that life wasn’t just continuing as usual. A lot of the project is becoming more compartmentalized. Things have taken a dark turn it feels like. They’ve forbidden communication between people working on different things. Something isn’t right and I don’t know what I should do. I’m not going to post any personally identifiable information but I will try to answer questions that won’t expose my role within the project… The AI came up with stuff that ranged from absolutely hilarious to completely horrifying. I guess that’s pretty accurate for the human experience. That’s more along the lines of a traditional bot but it goes to a much deeper level than a bot just reposting the current talking point. It’s when we have it live data on real individuals that things truly took off. It’s astoundingly accurate with reproducing real individuals” Now my sensitivity meter is the first to start squawking when so-called reports come across cyberspace that seem bogus and or contrived in any way. If it were not my friend of many years, who interacts within circles to which most of us haven’t entry, I might easily dismiss this insider’s concern as just another fictional creation. However, my friend doesn’t waste his time or mine with fiction. As a matter of fact, I doubt he has read any part of even one of my own novels. So I feel my thinking along these lines is worthwhile for us to consider. My friend acknowledges that anything coming across even closely guarded, private communications can be of false origin. It has been my experience and observation through these many years, however, that his sense of what has credence and what doesn’t is exquisitely keen. Here are some of his thoughts about this Lazarus Project matter: 1) The project has a biblically significant name: Lazarus; (2) Lazarus is said to be very good at impersonating people; (3) Lazarus is supposed to be strong enough to pass the Turing Test; (4) Meta is developing Lazarus to mimic the missing, dead, or otherwise unavailable; and (5) Meta is developing Lazarus under extreme secrecy (small, compartmentalized teams under NDA). Regarding his reference to the Turing test, a mathematician/cryptographer/pioneering computer scientist by the name of Alan Turing developed in 1950 what he called “the imitation game,” but what is now better known as the Turing test. It is a widely accepted test of the power of AI. The Turing test involves two human beings and a machine (computer) having AI. One human being serves as an interrogator. While the other human being and the machine are located out of the interrogator’s sight, the interrogator is tasked with interacting with the other human being and the machine and discerning from those interactions which is the machine and which is the human being. The machine passes the test if the human is unable to discern between the two. A machine passing the test is known as a “Turing machine.” Passing the Turing test does not mean that the machine is as intelligent as the human being, only that the machine appears in that interaction to be as intelligent as the human being. The Turing test is not the only test of AI, but it is by far the best-known. Even were the posts false, Lazarus is plausible. First, Mark Zuckerberg has publicly announced that Meta will focus on major AI development. Second, Facebook’s user base has been seriously eroding, meaning that Facebook is in desperate need of content to retain and encourage its remaining users; AI is well-suited to generate this content. Third, with the World Economic Forum and World Health Organization working hard to create and conceal mass casualties, simulating an enduring social media presence by the departed would help. Fourth, the powers-that-be would be strongly motivated to conceal an act of God that resulted in the sudden disappearance of many millions of people. From this, I gather that the purpose of Lazarus is to cover the mass disappearance or death of people due to one or a very few major events. It may not be able perfectly to conceal the absence of people, but it probably can conceal their absence for a short time and should at least create confusion and doubt and provide the basis of an official narrative that the event or events did not occur. It’s intriguing and plausible. My friend and I frequently discuss the rapid development across the spectrum of stage-setting for prophetic fulfillment. Spectacular progress in artificial intelligence add to stage-setting, not only for the fulfillment of prophecy about the coming Tribulation, but also about stage-setting for the narratives that will be floated when millions of people vanish from the nation and world. In that light, the Lazarus Project is indeed most interesting, as my friend would have it. Are You Vexed By Our Lawless And Self-Destructive Society? – By Hal Lindsey - https://harbingersdaily.com/are-you-vexed-by-our-lawless-and-self-destructiveness-society/ The Bible gives amazing promises of peace and joy to the followers of Jesus. The Christian life is a life of renewal and refreshment. To be redeemed in Christ is exhilarating and at the same time peaceful. In John 14:27, the Lord said to His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” Worldly peace comes and goes according to our circumstances. But the peace Jesus gives is based on Himself, and He never changes. So, how can anyone who has been made righteous in Jesus, experience torment? 2 Peter 2:8 speaks of Lot and the people of Sodom. It says that living there, Lot “felt his righteous soul tormented day after day with their lawless deeds.” The King James Version says the corruption in Sodom “vexed his righteous soul.” The Living Bible says Lot was “sick of the terrible wickedness he saw everywhere around him.” In our day, it’s easy to understand. We know what it is to be “sick of terrible wickedness” and “vexed” by lawless deeds. Such torment is not about self-righteousness or hate. It is about love. Sin brings pain, bondage, and death. And it vexes the righteous to see it happening. To a large extent, today’s societal institutions have stopped trying to restrain evil. Instead, those institutions now encourage the worship of wickedness. The damage being done is incalculable — especially to the little ones among us. That’s why caring creates torment. But remember this. None of us is righteous by nature. Romans 3:23 succinctly describes our condition. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Isaiah 64:6 says, “Our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.” But according to 2 Corinthians 5:21, He grants to us His own perfect righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If any man is in Christ, he is a new creature.” Our righteousness comes entirely from Him, and He makes it available to anyone who asks Him. With that righteousness comes refreshment, peace, and unspeakable joy. But there is also torment. To see things from God’s perspective turns everyone into a loved one. And we hurt to see them on their paths of pain. Luke 19:41 says that as Jesus approached Jerusalem, He “saw the city and wept over it.” The context shows that His righteous soul was tormented by the pain He knew was headed their way because they rejected Him. You might feel torment when you watch the news and see the increasing brutality of our world. It’s easy to be vexed by the self-destructiveness encouraged by popular entertainment. The ongoing celebration of evil probably makes you feel sick. You’re in good company. The Lord Himself shares your grief. Vexation comes with caring. But don’t let it overwhelm you. Live in the peace and joy of the Lord. Remember Nehemiah 8:10 — “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” You will not overcome evil by allowing it to depress you. Romans 12:21 says, “Overcome evil with good.” And it is good to walk in “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Daily Jot: Of child sexual abuse and the Catholic Church - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com The Archdiocese of Baltimore is urging its Roman Catholic congregants to oppose two bills “currently before the Maryland General Assembly that would remove the statute of limitations on civil claims for future incidents of child sexual abuse and retroactively revive claims that are currently time-barred, no matter how long ago the alleged abuse occurred.” In an email, the Archdiocese reasons that removing the statute of limitations “greatly increases the financial harm to the Church and its ministries,” noting that some 26 dioceses “have already filed for bankruptcy caused by similar laws in other states and more are expected.” Clearly, the Catholic Church is trying to mitigate risk on future claims of its systemic child abuse. Citing Maryland General Assembly House Bill 001 and Senate Bill 686, the Archdiocese says, “These bills treat public and private institutions differently by setting a lower ceiling on how much a public school board, for example, could be sued compared to a private institution such as a parish or non-public school. This creates two classes of survivors and greatly increases the financial harm to the Church and its ministries.” The email notes that “The Church in Maryland” already provides victims-survivors with millions in therapeutic counseling and direct financial payments as a result of their abuse and has implemented strict prevention policies. It also says that perpetrators can be criminally charged without time limitations. These bills are about future civil–not criminal–actions. They propose “repealing the statute of limitations in certain civil actions relating to child sexual abuse.” Criminal law deals with offenses against the public, society, or the state. Civil law deals with injury to an individual. Whether bills such as these in Maryland or any other state create two classes of survivors is really immaterial. The Roman Catholic Church is seeking to deprive compensation to victims-survivors of child sexual abuse perpetrated by its priests. BishopAccountability.org documents that the US Catholic Church has paid out over $3 BILLION on cases dating back to the 1950s, representing only a fraction of an estimated 100,000 victims. Let me be clear: No child should ever be sexually abused, especially by leadership of any church, any denomination. In November 2022, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh completed a 463-page report on an investigation that identified 158 Roman Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of Baltimore accused of abusing more than 600 victims over 80 years. Of course, Archbishop William Lori apologized, but the Archdiocese is calling on all Maryland Catholics to oppose legislation to allow FUTURE civil relief of victims and is spending millions to lobby against these bills. Not only does that apology ring hollow, the opposition means that this atrocity is not finished. It’s likely ongoing. Christ said in Matthew 18:6, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” How much tithe money perpetuates this evil and stains the hands of givers? Daily Devotion: Mature People of God - by Greg Laurie – www.harvest.org Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. —Ephesians 4:14 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/mature-people-of-god/ - Listen When we begin as Christians, when we put our faith in Christ and are born again, we start out as spiritual babies. This is true of every person, regardless of how young or old we are. Some grew up in the church and have always been familiar with the Bible, worship, and prayer. They made their own personal commitment to the Lord despite the fact that their parents raised them in the church. They realized their walk with the Lord needed to be their own. And that is a wonderful thing. Others came in cold from the world. I was one of those people. I had no background in the church and no understanding of the Bible. I had never worshipped God before, knew nothing about prayer, and knew relatively nothing about Jesus. Basically, I was ignorant. So, when I came into the faith, it was like a new world to me. I had a new outlook on life. I remember hearing the Bible for the first time when Pastor Chuck Smith spoke, and I had never heard anything like it before. It was mind-boggling. I realized that I had so much to learn. There are some Christians, however, who have known the Lord for years yet are still spiritual babies. They need to be spoon-fed spiritual truths. They still need to be dazzled. And they are still looking for something new. It is time to grow up. It’s time to be mature people of God, with a faith that sustains us, instead of living on fickle emotions that come and go. It is also time to find younger believers and help them grow up to spiritual maturity as well. There are false teachings and other things that can lead us astray. We need to be mature so that we can apply proper biblical understanding.
