Dominion – Pete Garcia - https://www.rev310.net/post/dominion
I was watching a Jimmy Evans sermon the other day and while he was relaying a story about a safari he went on, a thought popped into my head regarding the complicated topic of dominion. No, not the rigged and fraudulent voting machines the Biden Administration relied on to steal the 2020 election, but the dominion Adam lost when he and Eve sinned in the Garden. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26 For a brief moment in history, man had total dominion over the earth. This meant animals, fish, birds, plants, and every living and (presumably) non-living thing was subject to man's authority. Man was created to rule over nature benevolently, similar to how King Frank and Queen Helen were meant to benevolently rule over Narnia in C.S. Lewis' book The Magician's Nephew. However, once sin was introduced into the equation that dominion was lost and man has been on the proverbial struggle-bus ever since. At present, mankind is the most dominant form of living creature on planet earth, yet, we have no dominion. If you think otherwise, walk up to a stray Pitbull or wild animal, and try explaining that to them when you're running for your life. No, life changed after Adam's fall. When reading the Scripture regarding this, I am fascinated at how much is implied in the simple verses that describe this drastic change. At first glance, it doesn't seem too bad. But when you really dig into it, you recognize the gravity of the seriousness it entails. For instance, take just part of the statement God made to Eve for her participation in the fall in Genesis 3:16 (my emphasis). “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children;” Although not spelled out, this verse implies a multitude of things women throughout history have come to hate: monthly menstrual cycles, menopause, the pain and discomfort in nine months of pregnancy, the act of giving birth, the loss of children in birth, and the physical changes (weight gain, stretch marks, etc.) to the body after delivery. Quite a bit more when you really think about the consequences now, isn't it? The same could be implied in the verse about man's curse. Genesis 3:17-19 (my emphasis) “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,... ...Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” The ground was cursed and would no longer yield its full bounty. But wait, there's more! Man now had to work the ground by the sweat of his brow just to grow the food he would later eat so he could keep working. Thus, the vicious cycle of work began after the fall and man has been toiling away ever since. But this cursed-ness also introduces the idea that nature itself would be at enmity against man. "Thorns and thistles" are apropos indicators of both pain and suffering. While Adam and Eve probably would not have understood the concept of earthquakes, volcanos, tsunamis, and all other manners of natural phenomena which would later come, they understood at a basic level that nature now would no longer be under their dominion. Pain and suffering imposed by nature would now become the norm. Still, man's rebellious nature grow and continued to impose wickedness upon creation. Sin, at its most basic element, is purposely rebelling against God's standards of righteousness. Sin, consequently, leads to wickedness, which, if followed to its natural conclusion, leads to pain and death. Instead of allowing this pain and death to cause man to turn back to God for mercy, man's heart grew cold and hard. Man began to look for workarounds to this pain and death, and this rebellion (in the form of seeking knowledge) ultimately led to the global flood and the destruction of the antediluvian world. Of course, we are familiar with the rest of that particular story. After 1,656 years, God had had enough. He would wipe out every air-breathing creature that was not placed safely upon the ark with a great deluge. And upon the end of that year-long event, dry land reappeared in a drastically altered world. God had terraformed earth's topography via the flood and introduced things like giant oceans, separated landmasses, mountains, and drastically changing weather systems. Nevertheless, Noah and his family left the ark and sacrificed an animal to God in thanks. So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. Gen. 9:1-2 (my emphasis) This verse tells us that before the flood, animals had no fear of man. Although it is not stated but is presumed due to the context of Genesis 6:12, mankind abused that relationship with animal-kind greatly. So now, after the flood, animals would have the fear and dread of man instilled into their instinct. We (humans) were to be avoided at all costs in order to survive. This must have been very shocking to Noah and his family, as they had just spent a year on the ark with these creatures. Consequently, that has been the way of things ever since. Since then, we call an animal that is not domesticated, wild, or feral, and depending on what they are, we either hunt them or limit our exposure to them through all manner of technological advancements. In the past two centuries, the urbanization of the planet has greatly reduced their wild habitats, and where we see these two collide (nature and humanity) we often see tragedy in the form of excessive hunting, roadkill, deforestation, pollution, infestations, nuisances, pests, extinction, animal attacks, and other coexistence issues. Even the reality that animals hunt each other is a sad consequence of man's loss of dominion. Simply watch a nature show and see a lion brutally kill a gazelle, or crocodiles dragging a wildebeest into the river, and tell me if that is how God intended things to be or not? I think not. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. Rom. 8:20-23 Romans 8 tells us that creation groans under the burden of sin we have imposed upon it. And as that groaning intensifies, the calamities that befall this world will intensify. Not just earthquakes and hurricanes, but the animal kingdom itself will become increasingly hostile towards mankind. The late Chuck Missler once noted that the wild beasts mentioned in Revelation 6:8 who kill were not just carnivores and other predators, but also microbial viruses. And while that might certainly be true, I believe that after the Restrainer is removed in the Rapture of the Church, ALL animals will fear man and will become increasingly hostile. Just think about it as an expansion upon the fear of man God put on the animals in the Noahic Covenant (Gen. 9:1-2). When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth. Revelation 6:7-8 (emphasis mine) People often wonder what will become of their pets after the Rapture. I believe this is what happens. I believe all animals will revert back to their wild natures and will avoid mankind at all costs, if for nothing else, as an act of self-preservation. That's probably not what people want to hear, but I think when the Restrainer is removed part of that restraint also impacts the natural world. Fluffy and Fido will go feral and flee mankind altogether. Whether God gives them the ability to know how to hunt and live in the wild again, I don't know. I suppose in returning back to their feral states, they will instinctively know what to do. Conclusion Since at least the 1970s, there has been a growing segment within Christendom promoting the idea of Christian Dominionism and the reclaiming of dominion over the earth. Those who believe that might want to re-read passages like Luke 4:5-7, 1 Timothy 3, and 1 John 5:19. I am not one of those charismatic, or charismatic-leaning Christians who believe we can walk around and declare this place or that as Christ's territory. I am also not one to subscribe to the Seven Mountain Mandate. There is no Church Age mandate we can pull from Scripture to support this. Quite the opposite in fact. Jesus, Paul, Peter, James, Jude, and John all deal with the tribulations we as a body of believers will face in this life. Needless to say, we have had tribulation for the past two thousand years and will have tribulations (the wrath of Satan and man) until Christ returns and delivers us by way of a 'catching up' before The Tribulation (i.e., Daniel's 70th Week) begins. This world as it is today is not our home. Part of the reality when you become born again is, you immediately realize you are in enemy territory. We are in a war, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places (Eph. 6:12). If you are born again, regardless of your status, your spiritual walk with Christ, your denomination, or what you do for a living; you are an enemy combatant to Satan. He hates you, and he will never stop trying to destroy you, your family, your ministry, or your reputation. And he has a very large army behind him to help him do this. However, we (the Church) are called to be salt and light and are meant to be a restraining force against evil in these last days. We are to plant our roots deep like a tree and stand against the wind and the rain and prevent as best we can, the erosion of the ground around us. Part and parcel with this idea of dominion are nestled in the purposes behind the Seal, Trumpet, and Bowl Judgments as found in Revelation 6-19. This is the process by which Christ reclaims ownership of the earth. It is Him purging sin out of creation, similar to how it was done against Egypt in the Exodus. Although the Kingdom is proclaimed for Christ long before the end of the 70th Week, when Christ steps foot again on the earth at His Second Coming, He instantly terraforms Jerusalem (and the surrounding area) to the way it will be during His millennial reign. Christ will restore that perfect dominion only He can claim as the Kinsman Redeemer (the God-Man), and the natural order will be restored. In closing, we can hardly fathom what a world like that will look like because we've never had it nor seen it. But it is coming. Dominion is returning to earth and ending the reign of wickedness and chaos that has been ever-present since the fall. It is in those days that men will beat their swords into plowshares, and those alive then will be content with what they harvest themselves. No longer will men toil in vain, but will enjoy the work of their hands. Long-life will be restored to man and if someone perchance were to die at 100 years of age, they will be thought of as a child (Isaiah 65). But nature itself will be restored back to the way it was always intended to be. “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea. Isaiah 11:6-9 Even so, Maranatha! Cancel Culture Is Unbiblical and Could Be a Sign of the End Times, David Jeremiah Says - Michael Foust - https://www.christianheadlines.com/contributors/michael-foust/cancel-culture-is-unbiblical-and-could-be-a-sign-of-the-end-times-david-jeremiah-says.html Cancel culture involves a series of "unbiblical" beliefs that mirror what Jesus said would foreshadow the end times, author and pastor David Jeremiah says. Jeremiah, the pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon., Calif., made the remarks in a sermon Sunday about cancel culture, saying its goal of punishing and ostracizing is in conflict with Jesus' commands to love God and love others. The message was part of a sermon series about current events that will be summarized in an upcoming book, "Where Do We Go from Here? How Tomorrow's Prophecies Foreshadow Today's Problems." It is scheduled to be released in October. "Cancel culture is laser-focused on judgment and accusation and punishment," Jeremiah said. "And the goal of those who cancel others is to broadcast their sins from pillar to post, and never allow them to be removed or forgotten. Christ's goal, on the other hand, is love, mercy and grace." Jesus "spent a lot of time with people in His day who had been canceled, so to speak," Jeremiah said, mentioning the woman at the well and lepers. "It would be nice to think that cancel culture is a temporary phase that our world is going through," Jeremiah said. "But society is becoming more intolerant and polarized by the day. And I'm not sure we'll see a reversal of all these trends. The more insidious elements of cancel culture are a malignant form of the spitefulness and self-importance common to human nature. "What we're seeing today reminds me of what Jesus described in Matthew 24," Jeremiah said, referencing Jesus' comments on the signs of the end. "... Leading up to this great tribulation, Jesus predicted a series of signs that will foreshadow the end of history." Jeremiah read Matthew 24:10, which says, "many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another." "There are several terms in those verses that represent the ethos of cancel culture," he said. Cancel culture, Jeremiah said, is a "culture of disdain." "Jesus talked about how easily people would be offended in the days leading up to the tribulation," he said. "Boy, is that ever true? Have you ever noticed how easy people get offended these days? None of us wants to be offensive. But doesn't it seem like people everywhere are too easily offended? How long before someone sees us reading a Bible on the airplane and feels uncomfortable? When will someone take offense when we wear a t-shirt with the slogan John 3:16 on it? What about the cross around your neck that could get you in trouble?" Jesus said society leading up to the end times would be "marked by people who actively root up, expose and betray everybody around them. Wouldn't you say that kind of betrayal is commonplace in our world today? … We all have mistakes from our past we'd like to forget. All of us have made choices we regret and decisions we would correct or redo if we had the chance. But in a world fueled by cancel culture, those mistakes are not allowed to remain in the past." Cancel culture, Jeremiah said, also is defined by deception and disconnection. "Shockingly, a recent study revealed that nearly half of Americans have not made a new friend in the past five years," Jeremiah said. "... The culture leading up to the tribulation and the end of history will be characterized by coldness in our feelings for one another. … Shame will drive people inward. Bullying will drive them downward. Hatred will drive them backward." Jeremiah urged Christians to embrace four "un-cancellable concepts" in a world marked by cancel culture: wisdom, courage, forgiveness and love. "It's not easy to live as members of God's Kingdom in a world that is increasingly hostile to his values," Jeremiah said. "This is the shared experience of every generation of Christians since the first generation. So we've had 2,000 years to prepare for these days. One thing we know: The rewards of following Jesus Christ are always worth it." Global Weather Patterns Are Going Completely Nuts - by Michael Snyder - http://endoftheamericandream.com/global-weather-patterns-are-going-completely-nuts/ Our planet is going through extreme changes that are unlike anything we have ever seen before, and global weather patterns are going completely insane as a result. Last winter, record cold temperatures were being shattered all over the globe and we were witnessing snowfall totals that were absolutely crazy in many areas. Now summer has arrived in the northern hemisphere, and extreme weather events are making headlines every single day. This month alone, we have witnessed apocalyptic flooding in western Europe and China, a massive fire in Oregon has burned an area larger than the entire city of Los Angeles, and Brazil has announced to the world that it will have crop losses that are “historic” in nature. All throughout history there have been natural disasters, but these days we are faced with an endless series of droughts, floods, heat waves, mudslides, wildfires and crop failures. If you think that there is an “easy solution” to this crisis, you are just being delusional. Weather patterns are permanently shifting, and nothing will ever be the same again. Traditionally, Germany has had extremely stable weather, but now that is changing in a major way. An intense deluge over a period of two days caused unprecedented flooding in much of the nation, and Angela Merkel found it difficult to find words to describe the utter devastation that she personally witnessed… Parts of Western Europe were battered by two months’ worth of rainfall in two days, leading to overflowing rivers and torrents of floodwater that toppled centuries-old buildings and saturated farmland that collapsed into giant sinkholes of churned earth. “The German language barely has words for the devastation that has been wreaked,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a news conference after surveying the area Sunday. Because they had never seen a flooding disaster of this magnitude, countries in western Europe found themselves completely unprepared for what happened, and the death toll just keeps rising… The floods in Europe have killed at least 165 people, most of them in Germany, Europe’s most powerful economy. Across Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, hundreds have been reported as missing, which suggests the death toll could rise. Questions are now being raised about whether the authorities adequately warned the public about risks. Shortly after the flooding in western Europe, parts of China were hit by an even more intense deluge. The city of Zhengzhou got 8 inches of rain in just one hour on Tuesday, and it received a total of 23 inches of rain between July 17th and 20th. That was roughly the equivalent of the amount of rainfall that the city would normally receive in an entire year, and millions of Chinese citizens were caught completely off guard by the flood waters that suddenly rushed in from seemingly everywhere… Torrents of murky brown water gushed past the train window, flowing fast through the subway tunnel. Inside, passengers stood on top of seats, clutching their phones overhead as the muddy tide rose past their chests. Some gasped for air. Others sent desperate last messages to family members, telling them their bank card passcodes and saying goodbye. “The water outside has already come this high,” one frightened woman said, reaching out to the subway car door in a video that spread quickly online. “My phone is almost dead. I don’t know if this is my last WeChat message.” In other parts of the globe, unprecedented heat and drought are the major problems. In the United Arab Emirates, conditions have been so hot and so dry for so long that the government has decided to start using artificial methods to create rain… With temperatures in Dubai regularly surpassing 115 degrees Fahrenheit, the government has decided to take control of the scorching weather. Scientists in the United Arab Emirates are making it rain — artificially — using electrical charges from drones to manipulate the weather and force rainfall across the desert nation. Meteorological officials released video footage this week showing a downpour over Ras al Khaimah, as well as several other regions. Officials in Brazil should take note of what they are doing, because the endless drought in that nation is having a devastating impact on agricultural production. And just when it seemed like it couldn’t get any worse, a very early frost hit at just the wrong time… Brazil — the second-largest corn exporter in the world — suffered severe drought during most of the corn-growing months and in addition to that, the southern part of the country was affected by frost toward the end of June, which exacerbated corn yield losses. Only Brazil exports more corn than the United States does, and so Brazilian production is one of the keys that enables us to feed everyone on the planet. Unfortunately, this year we are being told that the crop losses in Brazil are going to be “historic”… “It is going to be a historic crop loss,” Daniele Siqueira from local consultancy Agrural told Agricensus. The second Brazilian corn crop safrinha has been severely affected by dry and warm weather during key development stages, and crop conditions worsened further in some regions that were hit by frosts for three days in the end of June. As a result, Agrural has lowered its estimates of Brazil’s safrinha output to 59.1 million mt in early-July, 22 million mt below the initial crop potential and the new frosts could mean these estimates are dampened even further. Agricultural production is also being devastated in neighboring Argentina, and at this point water levels in the Parana River are getting so low that the national government is stepping in… Argentina’s government has urged citizens to limit water use in a bid to alleviate pressure on the Parana River, a key grains thoroughfare that is at a 77-year low, a situation which is hampering shipments of cereals including soy and wheat. A government advisory group called on people to “save water”, store rainwater for irrigation and avoid burning waste to prevent wildfires on the wetlands around the river delta. Here in the United States, the western third of the nation is in the midst of a multi-year “megadrought” that is the worst that we have ever experienced. Last year, approximately 20 percent of the West was considered to be experiencing “severe drought”, but this year that number is up to 80 percent. Agricultural production is going to be way under expectations in the western third of the country, and the hot, dry conditions have created an ideal environment for wildfires. In fact, the Bootleg Fire in Oregon has already burned an area that is larger than the entire city of Los Angeles… The Bootleg Fire, Oregon’s third-largest wildfire ever recorded, has devastated farm communities in southern Oregon. The fire, according to the Incident Information System, has burned more than 364,113 acres, an area larger than Los Angeles. It has killed and maimed livestock, consumed pasturelands and blanketed crops with smoke. “It’s been awful,” said Connie Willard, leader of Project Spirit, a nonprofit horse rescue. It was being reported that the Bootleg Fire was so large that it could be seen from space. That is crazy. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning. Global weather patterns are only going to become even more extreme, and we are going to witness unimaginable natural disasters that will be of unprecedented size and scope. World leaders are clueless about what is really going on, and many of them are still convinced that they will be able to turn things around. As they chase fantasies, conditions around the globe will become increasingly apocalyptic, and this has very serious implications for every man, woman and child on the entire planet. Maranatha And Soon - By Dennis Huebshman - https://www.raptureready.com/2021/07/21/maranatha-and-soon-by-dennis-huebshman/ All true believers of our Savior Jesus have one thing in common; we are ready to leave this sin-filled, evil planet and begin our eternity with Him. Unfortunately, there are more people who reject the Savior than those who are believers, and they are caught up with the so-called “pleasures and treasures” of this earth. Whether they realize it or not, they are committing themselves to spending eternity separated from Him in total misery. (all emphasis mine) One word used by believers is “Maranatha,” which is translated as “Come, Lord Jesus.” There are two Bible verses with this message in them, 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Revelation 22:20. The first; “If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, Come!” and then; “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (ESV) Most prophecy experts and even novices such as myself believe that day is soon to be upon us. There have been movies and books about the event known as the “Harpazo,” which translates as “caught up” or “caught away.” It is also commonly known as the “Rapture,” or the carrying away of the church from earth to Heaven. The Bible tells of this in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-53. Before going further, Jesus will not be coming to call up any particular organized evangelical group, nor will it only be for those who attend services in any particular building. Jesus’ “church” is made up of people who serve God, and they will be found inside and outside formal churches. There are those who will receive and accept the gift Jesus provided that will never have been inside a formal church service, yet they will spend eternity with Him. Matthew 16:15-18; “He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in Heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.'” The “rock” was Peter’s confession that Jesus was the “Christ,” meaning one who is anointed or the Messiah. All who are to become a part of Jesus’ flock (John 10) must believe Jesus is our Savior and must accept the free gift that was given at Calvary. The only “ritual” is to confess we are all sinners and know that only Jesus can give forgiveness for our sins. Finally, we must call out to Him to be our Savior. As you will see, these fit the ABCs of Salvation. There are religions that state you must pass certain rituals, recite scripted lines, and provide some form of funding to become a member. This is why Jesus says the way is “hard” that leads to Salvation. It’s difficult for some to believe that it is actually child-like simple to be one of His flock. Ephesians 2:8-9; “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” In 1 John chapters 2-5, we’re told about false prophets and antichrists being among us. They were here even in the very first century of this age. Jesus Himself stated that near the end of this age, they would increase in numbers and activity (Matthew 24:5; 11-12 and also Luke 21). This is taking place today in this world, for those who know to look for it. Isaiah 5:20 has even entered some previously Bible-based churches. “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.” Messages are being given to provide the members a “feel-good” attitude, and sin is conveniently being left out. In fact, what God called abominations are now said to have “evolved” into accepted actions. Whatever relationships between two or more people, with age not being a barrier, are somehow no longer sinful in the eyes of these groups. After all, they believe the Bible is nothing but ancient writings over 2,000 years old, and the old “myths” couldn’t possibly be applied to today’s world. The turning away from anything to do with Jesus is obvious, especially among the younger generations. Even the people in our government, who are supposed to be there for our best interests, are now steadily moving toward the new world order and the one-world government. The day is almost here when the ultimate antichrist and false prophet will appear on the scene. When Jesus said, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” the church today, His true flock, will not go through the 7-year wrath/tribulation. God promised this in 1 Thessalonians 1:10, 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 and Revelation 3:10. As Joshua stated in Joshua 24:15, he and his house would serve the Lord. I firmly state here that in our house, we trust the Lord completely, that His promises are true, and because we have received and accepted His Son, we will not be here for the worst 7-year period of time this world has ever experienced. All of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of the Lord (Romans 3:23). The penalty for our sins is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through His Son Jesus (Romans 6:23). I mentioned the ABCs of Salvation. Please go to Romans 10:9-13. Then John 3:18 and 1 John 5:12. Follow this with John 14:6 and Acts 4:12, and finally, Romans 8:1. The last verse is God’s absolute covenant with all believers because “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” A – admit you are a sinner as we all are (Romans 3:23). B – believe Jesus died for all our sins, and God raised Him from the grave to conquer sin and death. Jesus is the only way to Heaven (John 14:6). C – Call on the name of the Lord, and you will be saved (Romans 10:13). Do not complicate what God has provided for us. No one will be turned away, if they will truly call out to His Son to be their Savior. All who refuse to receive and accept the Gift given by Jesus, paid for with His precious sinless blood, will be at the Great White Throne Judgment of Revelation 20:11-15. All world events today are right on target to enter the Tribulation. You can guarantee that you will not be here for that terrible time by becoming a member of Jesus’ flock. Today would not be too early to call on Him, for the “call” for us to rise up to meet Him in the air could be at any moment now. Once you have called out and received and accepted His forgiveness, you too will be saying: Maranatha – Come, Lord Jesus! [email protected] Daily Jot: The Farm Chronicles: Everyone should have a July 23rd - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com This day, July 23, is both a joyful and solemn day for me. It is a day where I remember great adventures, the bond of true friendship and brotherly love, and also the emptiness that follows in the wake of earthly death. My best friend and blood brother Sonny would have been 66 today had cancer not cut his life short. Sonny and I were sitting in the sun at the edge of his garage about three weeks before he went home to the Lord. I told him that no matter where I was at, or what was happening, or what time of the day it was, I knew that I could count on him if I needed him. It wasn’t something that I thought, or hoped about. I knew it. That’s the type of relationship we had. We were more than brothers. We met in the basement of Wayland Community Church, in the village of Wayland, Ohio when we were four years old. Two shy boys who wouldn’t speak to anyone, but we spoke to each other. That meeting was the beginning of a lifelong adventure for Sonny and Billy. We did all the things young boys do, making good use of my parents 100-acre farm—riding horses, making tree forts, playing cowboys and Indians, civil war, World War II, camping out, backyard football–you name it. In all of these adventures, we sought to be on the right side of things. We were the good guys, the heroes. Our values and character were formed in those early days and our commitment to love, truth, honor and justice carried over in our adult years. Sonny’s life recalls how he loved his family; his integrity; his honorable character. These qualities just didn’t happen. They were all parts of his upbringing. How his parents raised him. The influence of my parents. The talks we had around the campfires. Along about the time when we were 10 or 11 years old, we learned of Gene Autry’s Cowboy Code. He wrote them in the 1940s. It was a code of conduct on how to live your life—things like never shooting first, treating others well and with respect, telling the truth, keeping clean thoughts and speech, being a hard worker and a patriot. These were the pillars that held up our lives, with Christ as the chief cornerstone. Christ gave us a new commandment as recorded in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” So often our professional careers take different paths. We don’t see close friends for long lengths of time. We wish that we lived closer together; that our families could be closer—seeing life in the rear-view mirror is a perfect 20-20 vision. So often, we let the busy days become weeks and months and years before we realize that time has passed and relationships have been put on the back burner. They are precious. Water them. Feed them. Hold them dear. Have a July 23rd in your life to remember and cherish the good times. Daily Devotion: A Bridge for the Gospel - by Greg Laurie – www.harvest.org I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. —Philippians 3:7 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/a-bridge-for-the-gospel/ - Listen There’s a lot of power in the simplicity of a changed life. The man who was born blind told others, “I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!” (John 9:25 NLT). And the Samaritan woman testified of Jesus, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” (John 4:29 NLT). Then “the people came streaming from the village to see him” (verse 30 NLT). When you can share the before and after of what God has done in your life, it can speak to people in a special way. Perhaps they would never imagine that you were once who you were and did what you did, because Jesus Christ has completely transformed you. It’s interesting how often the apostle Paul, who was a brilliant orator and a wonderful intellect, would use his testimony to speak to people. We see in Acts 24 that when he was speaking before the Roman governor, he began with his own story of how he came to faith. And then he went to the essential message of the gospel. When you’re telling your story, however, accuracy is important. So is truthfulness, because some people’s testimonies seem to become more dramatic with the passing of time. Another problem is that some Christians make their past sound more appealing than their present. That makes me wonder whether they fully understand what it means to be a Christian and what their lives before Christ really were. I love the way Paul put it: “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:7–8 NLT). Telling your story is a powerful bridge for the gospel message. America is in more danger of falling than at any time in its history. But I believe Bible prophecy predicts this very decline. From this point on, we believers have to get serious. We are going to face discouragement, disillusionment and, most certainly, persecution in the time between now and the Rapture. But don't be discouraged or disillusioned. The coming turmoil will provide us unrivaled opportunities to share the good news of the Gospel. So be ready to share your faith and your hope with those who need Christ.
