Leanna Crawford’s story behind her latest song immediately captured my attention. She related a time from her childhood when she saw fireflies light up her yard at night. Her dad responded to her amazement by asking, “How can you not see the Creator in all this?” The song that came as a result of her father’s question, “How Can You Not See God?” has become a favorite of mine. How can people not see God in the beauty and wonders of creation? You might guess where my mind goes when I hear this question; I wonder, “How can you not see the fulfilling of biblical prophecy everywhere you look?” I am, no doubt, taking liberties with her title. I realize that the majority of saints reading this article agree with me regarding Bible prophecy. For you, the question is a confirmation of what you believe rather than that of expressing doubt in your convictions. It’s a matter of pointing out the obvious just as Crawford’s father did with his question to his daughter. For those that place their hope in the church rather than in Jesus’ imminent appearing, I have much for them to consider. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE GOD’S HAND IN THE MIRACULOUS REAPPEARANCE OF ISRAEL AS A NATION? Dr. William Watson wrote an article called “The Rise of Philo-Semitism and Premillennialism During the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries.”[i] In it, he lists forty-five writers who, from 1585 to 1800, expressed beliefs in Jesus’ millennial reign over the nations of the earth. Although the Reformers didn’t go there, it was their Bible interpretation principles of sola scripture and Scripture interprets Scripture that led to the revival of premillennialism (the belief in a literal thousand-year reign of Jesus as the Apostle John reveals in Revelation 20:1-10) in the centuries that followed the Reformation. Perhaps the most well-known premillennialist of this era was Isaac Newton. His study of the books of Daniel and Revelation led him to conclude in 1706 that God would again restore Israel as a nation. Early in the twentieth century, the continued prediction by premillennialists that Israel would become a nation again was met with considerable ridicule by the amillennialists (those that equate the words of Revelation 20:1-10 with either the church age or the eternal state). Dr. David Reagan, founder of the Lion and the Lamb Ministries, wrote the following about this: The Christian leaders of the mainline denominations laughed at these literal interpretations and boldly asserted that Israel would never exist again. Once the state of Israel became a reality in 1948, these same Christian leaders began to argue that it was just an “accident of history” and not a fulfillment of prophecy! This is spiritual blindness, and it is very sad since it has resulted in the average Christian knowing nothing about the significance of the re-establishment of Israel as a miraculous fulfillment of Bible prophecy and a sure sign of the Lord’s soon return.[ii] How people not see God’s hand in the fulfilment of prophecy in what happened in May of 1948? There’s no other account of a people scattered and persecuted for two thousand years suddenly becoming a nation again with their same language. Isaiah 66:8 predicted that Israel would become a nation again in exactly the way it happened: Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment? Sadly, those who regard the emergence of Israel as an “accident of history” are the very ones that ridicule those of us who see biblical prophecies coming to life in our day. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE MULTITUDE OF SIGNS POINTING TO THE SOON ARRIVAL OF THE TRIBULATION PERIOD? The “spiritual blindness” to which Dr. Reagan refers extends beyond an ignorance of the significance of Israel becoming a nation to the multitude of signs telling us we live in the last days. How can believers today miss the multitude of warnings that the seven-year Tribulation is coming at this world like speeding diesel locomotive? It must either be ignorance of biblical prophecy or spiritual blindness that stems from a love of the things this world has to offer. I listed all the reasons for lateness of the day in which live in a post from last year, 12 Signs the World is Running Out of Normal. I also explored the lateness of the hour in The Bubble of Normalcy. Below is a list of the twelve signs pointing to the nearness of Jesus’ appearing:
All twelve of the above tell us that the Tribulation is ever so close and with it the Rapture of the church, which the Bible says will happen before it. Concerning the soon arrival of the one-world government, author and speaker Pete Garcia aptly writes: Finally, we can see the final beast system starting to take form. It is using the crisis of health and money to steer the world into a biometric digital currency that will one day be used to control all buying and selling on the planet. At this point, it's becoming violently obvious as to where this is all heading. In fact, one would have to be intentionally ignorant of Bible prophecy to purposefully ignore what is happening and where it is headed (see Revelation 13:16-18). Even non-Christians are starting to identify much of this stuff as having prophetic importance.[iii] Twenty-five years ago, it would’ve been impossible for the antichrist to control commerce in the world in the way that we read in Revelation 13:16-18. He would’ve needed a massive army of devotees to do so. Today, with the advances in Artificial Intelligence, gigantic databases, and 5G technology, it will soon be possible for one person to set the parameters of buying and selling for everyone in the world. By the midpoint of the Tribulation, he will be able to control buying and selling worldwide with the flip of a switch. How can any believer not see the fulfillment of prophecy in this? The words of the book of Revelation are coming to life before our eyes. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE DECEPTION THAT JESUS SAID WOULD MARK THE LAST DAYS? When asked about the signs of the last days, Jesus’ first words were, “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matthew 24:4). In 2 Thessalonians 2:3-10, we again see lawlessness and deception as signs that would mark the appearance of the antichrist who can’t appear on the world scene before the Rapture. How can we not recognize the deception of our day as the fulfillment of what Jesus warned about both directly and through the Apostle Paul? For those in the U.S. Biden administration, lying comes as easy as breathing. The mainstream media anesthetizes people, and Christians, to the truth making them unable to recognize the dangers that lie at their doorstep. Despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary, the media still proclaims the deadly lie that the COVID vaccines are safe and effective. They are neither! HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE SOON ARRIVAL OF GOD’S WRATH UPON AMERICA? We are living on borrowed time. God is sovereign, but from our perspective we see His patience with a nation gone mad. He’s holding back the full explosion of evil and destruction that will happen at the beginning of the Day of the Lord. Many expected the worldwide shortage of food to be much more severe by now. It seems strange to me that the war in Ukraine has not yet exploded into a much wider conflict with disastrous results. Years ago, many predicted that the U.S. economy was on the verge of a total collapse, but despite efforts to force such a scenario, it hasn’t yet happened. God’s sovereign power and restraining hand is the only reason all these things haven’t occurred. So yes, we are living on borrowed time in respect to God pouring out His wrath on the United States. Pete Garcia, a former Major in the U.S. Army, conveys my thoughts a bit more directly: It should be obvious to anyone with half a brain that the cracks in the American pillars are so profound by now that something (or Someone) has been supernaturally sustaining the integrity of them.[iv] How can people not recognize that the end of America is ever so close? Why is it that many of those sounding the alarm don’t believe the Bible or have any faith whatsoever in God? Some from this group see the dangers that a great many church leaders refuse to recognize. The start of June signals a time of lewd displays of wickedness, which become viler and more disgusting each year. When one also considers the blood of innocents that flows from the abortion mills in America, one has to wonder how much longer before God says “enough!” I know that the majority of those reading this article agree with me and the intent of my question is to reinforce your valid beliefs. For the others, I agree with Pete. It takes a purposeful ignorance of biblical prophecy not to recognize that the world, and especially the U.S., rests on the edge of a cliff. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE NEARNESS OF JESUS’ APPEARING? I believe Jesus is coming soon for His church. The wildcard in the timing of the Lord’s appearing consists of both His sovereignty and restraining power. I am also convinced that God will severely judge America, but He is exceedingly patient waiting for more people to turn to Him before He pours out His great wrath. If you look at world events and think the Lord should have come for us by now, it shows you understand Bible prophecy as well as the role of Holy Spirit restraining the full force of destruction and deception that will come with the unveiling of the antichrist. Don’t be discouraged, the Lord will reward your confidence in His promises. I don’t know what Leanna Crawford believes about the end times, but I love her song and it sparked the writing of this article. For those that look at the beauty and wonders of nature and not see the creator, her words ring with truth, “How Can You Not See God?” For me, I can’t get past a similar question as I look at the world around me: “How can I not see that I live in the very last moments before Jesus’ appearing?” How can pastors not see the signs of the times and as a result provide those in their charge with the hope they desperately need in these perilous times? Bud Light, Target and other companies that have taken controversial stands on cultural issues have been dominating the headlines for weeks, and now the month of June is here. An entire month is set aside to celebrate “Pride”, and you can’t escape it even if you wanted to do so. Rainbow colors will constantly remind us of what we are all supposed to be celebrating, and there will be gatherings and parades in cities from coast to coast. Today, Pride Month has become one of the most prominent holidays in the United States, but it actually hasn’t been around that long. In fact, the very first time it was officially recognized by the White House was in 1999… June is Pride Month, commemorating the Stonewall uprising, which began on June 28, 1969. Though the first Gay Pride Liberation March took place in Manhattan in 1970 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Stonewall, it took 30 years for Pride Month to become official, in a 1999 proclamation from former President Bill Clinton. I was stunned when I read that, because it seems like Pride Month has been around forever. And this June it will be celebrated in virtually every single nation on the entire planet. For the next 30 days, it won’t be too difficult to distinguish those that support “Pride” from those that don’t support “Pride”. People will be letting us know what they believe by what they wear, what flags they fly, what celebrations they attend, what they put on their social media profiles, and by the opinions that they share with others. Needless to say, the Biden administration has very strong feelings about the month of June. The following comes from the proclamation that the White House just released to commemorate Pride Month… In June 1969, a courageous group of Americans rose up to protest the violence and marginalization they faced in what became known as the Stonewall Uprising. Police had raided the Stonewall Inn — a gay bar located in New York City — and for the next six days they clashed with LGBTQI+ protestors, who bravely stood their ground. Their courage sparked a civil rights movement for the liberation of the LGBTQI+ community and changed our Nation forever. During Pride Month, we honor a movement that has grown stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive with every passing year. Pride is a celebration of generations of LGBTQI+ people, who have fought bravely to live openly and authentically. And it is a reminder that we still have generational work to do to ensure that everyone enjoys the full promise of equity, dignity, protection, and freedom. Of course this comes at a time when LGBTQI+ issues are already creating a firestorm of controversy. In recent weeks, conservatives all over the U.S. have been boycotting Bud Light after the company partnered with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney to celebrate “365 days of girlhood”. As a result of the boycott, Bud Light’s sales have absolutely plummeted… The sales volume of Bud Light dropped 29.5% in the week ending May 20 as compared to the same period last year, according to data provided to Newsweek by Bump Williams Consulting and Nielsen IQ. But instead of reversing course, Bud Light has decided to double down… Bud Light announced Tuesday that it is donating $200,000 to the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce in support of its Communities of Color Initiative, as the company continues to struggle in the wake of the Dylan Mulvaney scandal. The once most-popular beer brand in America continues to hemorrhage market value in the wake of its April partnership with trans Dylan Mulvaney. Millions of conservatives are also boycotting Target, and this has caused the stock price of the company to fall precipitously… Target shares dropped again on Wednesday as the retail juggernaut continues to suffer after LGBTQ Pride products outraged some customers across the nation. Target shares dropped another 2.14%, marking the ninth straight decline, as tracked by Dow Jones Market Data Group. Since widespread backlash over Pride merchandise polarized the nation, Target’s market value has fallen over $13 billion to $60.44 billion as of Wednesday’s closing price. The company’s market value was over $74 billion earlier this month. Of course it isn’t just big corporations that are causing controversy. This week, a wildly popular Christian television show called “The Chosen” came under fire after it was revealed that they had a “pride flag” openly displayed on set… The popular TV show “The Chosen” defended having a pride flag on set after facing criticism on social media, according to its Twitter posts on Tuesday. Jon Root, a Christian conservative commentator and Turning Point USA contributor, tweeted out screenshots Monday of a behind-the-scenes YouTube video showing a pride flag on the set of the TV show, which portrays the life of Jesus and his ministry, and asked why the pride flag was there. The Chosen Twitter account replied to Root Tuesday, saying that “we will work with anyone on our show.” The “pride flag” was created in 1978, and so it is less than 50 years old. But this June it will be displayed far more prominently in the U.S. than the American flag. And it will be flown at the White House and at U.S. government buildings and embassies all over the world. Never in our history have we flown another flag, and it should deeply alarm all of us that this “symbol of defiance” will be proudly displayed by thousands upon thousands of institutions from coast to coast. Unfortunately, most of those that are flying this flag never even give much thought to who they are defying. As I have repeatedly warned my readers, if we stay on the road that we are currently on there is no future for our nation. More and more people are finding out that our government is making decisions that are designed to sink the ship. And they're finding out that the va((ines are in fact bio-weapons launched by our own deep state, shadow government. What we know and can count on is that Believers will be rescued prior to God's Holy wrath coming. We know worldwide we'll have an economy, electricity, water and food distribution right up until the Rapture. What we don't know is how much persecution we might face as Believers before the Rapture. There are Believers, reading the same Bible we are, that are being horribly tortured every day around the world. And the protections afforded those of us living in the USA seem to be eroding by the day. All this just points to the lateness of the hour. I could make a good case for the Rapture this September. But I could also make a good case for the Rapture in 2026. Realistically I don't think we'll get much beyond 2033. So we're certainly close to the end of the 2000-year Church Age that began in 33 AD. Prov. 11:14 ---------------------------------- The Big Pride Push “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." Lev. 18:22 What’s with this major push of the Godless homosexual agenda around the world in these last days? It’s being heavily rolled out in schools, government, businesses, everywhere. Well, it's not really surprising, this proliferation of woke sin was actually prophesied. Remember Jesus said that just before the Rapture it will be “just like” the days of Noah before the flood (Matt. 24:36-39). But He also said it would be “just like” the days of Lot before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Luke 17:28-30). In past articles (Click Here) we’ve covered in detail about Noah and the worldwide flood. We showed that Noah and his ark represent the Church being lifted up and over the worldwide destruction and returning to the earth with Christ at the Second Coming for His Millennial reign. However, in the Sodom and Gomorrah example, Lot represents the Jews—also escaping destruction but staying on the earth during the Tribulation (Rev. 12:6). It’s important to note that in the Biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah’s destruction there was extreme wickedness in those cities. the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD. Gen 13:13 And the LORD said, “The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is indeed great, and their sin is exceedingly grave. Gen. 18:20 Therefore, in the days leading up to the Rapture, we should see extreme wickedness. But notice their main sin that the Bible records is rampant homosexuality. …the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.” Gen. 13:4-5 So if we’re getting close to the Rapture, we should be seeing worldwide rampant homosexuality waxing worse and worse. Hmmm… June is “Pride” month, and if you are politically correct you’re supposed to celebrate and encourage homosexuality. However, Believers should be Biblically correct, which means we should have no part in celebrating homosexuality—a sin that was worthy of death in the Old Testament. If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. Lev. 20:13 The Church Age commandments also condemn homosexuality: Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 1Cor 6:9-10 It’s important to note that the next verse says… Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. 1Cor 6:11 It doesn't matter what your past sins are, when you get saved you're “washed,” you’re a new cleansed creature in Christ, and He gives you the power to walk away from your past sins. Romans 1 shows that unrepentant people who reject God begin a downward spiral that ultimately can result in the worst of all sin…homosexuality. For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, Rom. 1:26-28 And God even holds accountable those who may not be homosexual, but defy God and agree / cheer on this grievous sin. they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. Rom. 1:32b And God knows your heart. No getting out of that one. But the main reason Satan pushes homosexuality so much is that homosexuals can’t reproduce. Humans are made in the image of God, so the last thing Satan wants is more humans. Satan is all about death and destruction, so he wants to kill the humans that are on the earth, the pinnacle of God’s creation 6000 years ago, and keep more humans from being born. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; Gen. 1:28 That verse doesn’t say fill the earth until we think it has enough people. I've heard several apologists repeat that currently the entire population of the planet could fit nicely in the state of Florida. So there’s plenty of room for the world population to continue to grow. We’re to keep having kids because they are an eternal gift from God. Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; Ps. 127:3-5 Why anyone would want to refuse an eternal gift from God, for any reason at any time, is a puzzle to me. The only thing from this life that matters for Believers 100 years from now are our children. I’ve always found it fascinating that in the account of Job, he lost everything and then God restored everything double. His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, Job 1:3a The LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had 14,000 sheep and 6,000 camels and 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 female donkeys. Job 42:12 But God didn’t double Job’s children. Seven sons and three daughters died, but Job’s kids were not doubled. He had seven sons and three daughters. Job 42:13 Why were Job's kids not doubled like the animals? The simple reason is that God DID double the children. His first 10 who “died” were eternal. Job would see them again one day. The ten new children God gave him effectively doubled what he had…proving them eternal and different than animals. Our children are the only things we can take into the future. They are the only things that matter 100 years from now. Money, houses, jobs, fame, etc. are temporal, but children are forever. Therefore we can safely conclude that Satan is cunningly behind everything that reduces the population in any way: Birth control, vaccines that kill and/or maim, diseases like cancers (especially disease that that keep reproductive organs from working), miscarriages, low sperm count in men, foods purposely tainted to lower the human population, and the more recent, unbelievable act of cutting off a boy's penis and a girl's boobs. And, of course, the lynch pin of all of this is homosexuality... which is the opposite of “multiplying” by God’s heterosexual family design. Know Your Enemy Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1Pet. 5:8 Satan hates your guts; he wants you dead. If he can’t kill you he wants you divorced and/or miserable from sickness. It is only by the grace of God that anybody has reasonable health to enjoy life and not be harassed by the demonic forces on this planet. There is a great verse to keep in mind when you read stuff like this: “Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.” 1John 3:4b Greater is God/Jesus who is in us than Satan who is in the world. Believers have zero to fear. Zero. God's in control at all times. Another good verse is: Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 Don’t miss the first part of that verse…you need to be in submission to God before you start dealing with the devil. A big part of submission is armoring up with scripture so that we have the discernment to know the difference between good and bad in situations all day long. Our goal is to, as Daryl Kraft so eloquently teaches, be able to “think in verses” all day long. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2Cor. 10:5 Our whole purpose of bringing every thought into scriptural alignment is to live a life dedicated to God, not Satan. You are either serving one or the other. And understanding that fact has never been as important as it is in these last days. So the big push lately was foretold 2000 years ago and it’s happening right on schedule. And, for what it's worth, I’m steering clear of any store that pushes the worst of all sin. Just saying…. BP All That Glitters Is Not Gold: Is the Allure of High-Tech ‘Progress’ Leading Us Down A Treacherous Path? – By JB Hixson - https://harbingersdaily.com/is-the-allure-of-high-tech-progress-leading-us-down-a-treacherous-path/ 2 Corinthians 11:14 KJV – “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” It is moth season here in Colorado, and that means our back porch is overrun with moths at night. If we open the door after dark, even for a few seconds, the winged pests dart toward the light emanating from inside the house. I installed one of those bug zappers in the corner of the porch in an effort to lure them away from the door, but somehow two or three of them always find a way to sneak their way inside. I am told these are miller moths. Every spring they migrate from the plains to the mountains looking for food. Fortunately, “miller season” only lasts about three weeks. I do not know much about moths, but I have made a couple of observations. First, they appear to travel in swarms. I rarely see a solo moth separated from the pack. Where there is one, there are usually many more. Second, they are not very smart. Even when moth after moth disappears into the bug zapper never to return, their comrades keep following in their wing-steps. And this is in spite of the fact that each disappearance coincides with a startling Zap! You would think they would figure it out, but these dumb insects continue to fall for the same old ruse. There is something irresistible about that glittering light. I suppose I should not be so hard on the poor millers. After all, we humans, with superior intellect, made in the image of God, once indulged in a perilous piece of fruit just because it was shiny. William Shakespeare put it this way, “All that glitters is not gold.” We live in an unprecedented age when glitter is at an all-time high. We have smart phones, smart meters, smart refrigerators, smart speakers, smart plugs, smart lights, smart thermostats, smart showers, smart mattresses, and smart toilets. We are building entire cities that are supposedly smart. Each day brings stunning new technological gadgets, tools, and toys. We have brain-computer implants, AI newscasters, crops that make their own fertilizer, self-driving cars, 5G technology that can harvest energy from wireless signals, invasive biometric surveillance, and microsatellites orbiting the globe connecting the world in a vast Internet Of Things. Like the miller moths, the collective masses seem to be flying naively toward the light of progress. But at what cost? Could it be that the allure of high-tech gold is leading us down a treacherous path? The Bible warns that even Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). Technology, in and of itself, is morally neutral. It can be used for good or evil. For example, in benevolent hands, science can solve medical problems that have confounded doctors for centuries. Yet, in the hands of the Luciferian elite, technology can deceive the world and pave the way for the tyrannical rule of the Antichrist. Today’s convenient bells and whistles are tomorrow’s prisons. As we march rapidly toward the end of the age, resist the temptation to follow the crowd. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” Daily Jot: The American Chronicles: The Rob from Richmond Story - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com It was a windy day as we wound down through the marshland and crossed the bridge to Chincoteague Island, Va. The island and its barrier island Assateague are known for the wild ponies roaming the island’s wetlands. They inspired Marguerite Henry to write the true-to-life children’s novels “Misty of Chincoteague” and “Stormy, Misty’s Foal.” The ponies are descended from those who swam to shore after the wreck of a Spanish galleon. Today, they are preserved by a registry and an annual pony penning where “saltwater cowboys” round up a number of ponies and swim them across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague for an auction. Misty has made Chincoteague famous, but there is much more. Visiting Chincoteague is like taking a step back into the 1960s. There are quaint shops. The people are friendly and down home, pretty much unaffected by the thousands of tourists who visit each summer to see the ponies and experience the beach on Assateague. There is a great wildlife trail and bike path that serpentines through Assateague where you can see many types of birds and, when they are out grazing, the ponies. Chincoteague has become a “go to” beach getaway for Chris and I over the years because it’s only about a four-hour drive from home. We usually have stayed at a friend’s who rents her house to us. This time, we settled into our travel van at the Jellystone Park campground which is among the most beautiful campgrounds in our travels to date. It was there that I met Rob from Richmond. Rob is a Vietnam veteran whose Air Force experience led him into a 27-year career keeping the Fed Ex jets in the air. He had many fantastic experiences during that time with presidents and celebrities, “a great time,” he surmised. We exchanged some brief stories, but there is a much deeper side to Rob and his wife Mary. Their son Jeff was discovered to have brain cancer when he was seven years old. Through treatment, it went into remission, but sadly, it returned by the time he was 10, and he died shortly thereafter. Rob recalled how his son was a Kansas City Chiefs fan at the time Joe Montana was playing there. Jeff had written to Montana, and they struck up a friendship. Joe encouraged Jeff with many mementos from the Chiefs, and Jeff, Mary and Rob even attended Joe’s Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio. As we talked, I could tell that Rob was a follower of Christ. I asked him how Jeff’s death affected his relationship with God. Without hesitation, Rob replied without hesitation, “It drew me closer than ever.” He explained how he and his Labrador Retriever began to visit kids in hospitals with various illnesses to bring some joy during difficult times. Rob said he knew that Jeff was with Jesus and that they all would be reunited someday. These days, Rob and Mary travel and camp whenever they can. He said that despite what you hear on the news, “There are a lot of wonderful people across the country.” As advised in 1 Peter 3:15, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” That embodies Rob from Richmond. And even if you’re riding a high-tech bike with a monitor displaying terrain that you’re supposedly going over, a quick look around reminds you that you’re on a machine. And you’re in the same place where you started. That is what life can be like sometimes. You’re always trying, but it seems like you’re not going anywhere. Solomon looked at life that way. He wrote, “What do people get for all their hard work under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes. . . . Everything is wearisome beyond description. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied. No matter how much we hear, we are not content” (Ecclesiastes 1:3–4, 8 NLT). That’s a bleak way to look at life. But throughout Ecclesiastes, Solomon uses a phrase that helps us explain his outlook: “under the sun.” Solomon was speaking of horizontal, strictly human living. He rarely looked above the sun for answers. In other words, he was not looking to God. Instead, he was looking horizontally. He was looking to this planet, to this world, for answers. As a result, Solomon decided to take a crash course on sin. He was prepared to try everything that was out there. He wanted the finest entertainment the world offered and the finest education that money could buy. And he wanted to experience unlimited materialism. Basically, Solomon wanted to experience everything there was to experience. Solomon had what most people only dream of. But in the end, it turned out to be a nightmare. This serves as a reminder that if we leave God out of the equation when we attempt to meet the deepest needs of our lives, we always will come up empty.
