A reader recently sent me an email that said:
 

• I know that all of us have heard that depression and suicide are becoming rampant with our children and our elderly. I believe the reason is because they have no hope. Many go to church, but they have a propensity for depression and an attitude that there is nothing more to live for. I feel that the church needs to step up and become more aware of the End-Time news that needs to be taught that will help lift these poor people’s emotions to a higher plane of hope and renewed faith that the Bible is not a pile of fantasy tales that haven’t come true.

 
I know:
 

• That at least one-fourth to one-third of the Bible is prophecy, depending upon who we are listening to.
• That Jesus told us many times to watch for His return.
• That when Jesus gave the Great Commission, He told us to teach all nations to observe all (all, not just some of) the things He said (Matt. 28:19-20).
• That the world situation will worsen at the end of the age (II Tim. 3:1-13).
• That the glorious return of Jesus is our blessed hope (Titus 2:13).
• That under the influence of the Holy Spirit, Paul gave us the word of the Lord (something Jesus said about the Rapture) and told us to comfort one another with what Jesus said (I Thess. 4:13-18).
• That I often receive emails from church members who say their pastor never mentions Bible prophecy; they have asked their pastor to mention it occasionally, and he will not do it, and they cannot find a church near them that has a pastor who occasionally preaches on Bible prophecy.

 
I ask is it possible:
 

• That the prophesied worsening world situation (Covid-19 deaths and side effects, inflation, talk of a digital currency, etc.) is causing an increase in depression and suicide, and most church members attend churches that have pastors who will not tell them that there is a higher plane of hope?
• That there is no need for the unchurched to ask many church members what they think about the current world situation because nothing is ever said about it in the pulpit, in the Sunday School literature, in the Sunday School class, and the church members have never studied it on their own?
• That lost church members and others are attending churches and listening to pastors who will never tell them that they could be running out of time to get saved?
• That the answers that some depressed and suicidal people are seeking are in the Bible, but there is no chance that they will ever hear those hope-filled comforting words from a pastor or a church member in their neighborhood?
• That the prophesied worsening world situation is partly due to a lukewarm attitude and spiritual failure in the church that is leading to the coming Judgment of God, church members that will not make it to heaven, the rise of the Antichrist, the coming Mark of the Beast, and the fulfillment of other terrible events?

 
Here are some current events that appear to indicate that the days of pastors and church members ignoring that higher plane of hope are about over.
 
One, concerning the failure to talk about that higher plane of hope in view of the prophesied worsening world situation: on Sept. 18, 2023, The Christian Post reported that well-known Christian researcher George Barna has released a new book in which he claims that millions of uncommitted Christians are causing “a catastrophic decline in biblical worldview in America.”
 
Here is part of what Barna’s research shows:
 

• Many Christians feel ill-equipped, so they outsource their responsibilities as parents to others (teachers, coaches, experts, etc.) “who may not share their worldview and values.”
• “Our worldview is the decision-making filter that informs every decision we make — intellectual, moral, emotional, and spiritual.”
• “Most of them (parents) were also found incapable of passing on a biblical worldview to their children because most don’t have one.”
• “They (parents) can’t give what they don’t have — and this creates a gaping spiritual vacuum as today’s parents are raising their children.”

 
I do not question the accuracy of Barna’s research, but I found it troubling because the Bible teaches that there will be a falling away, a departing from the faith, a lukewarm spirit in the Church at the end of the age, and many will not make it to heaven.
 
Every parent should be sure that they and their children are putting their faith in Jesus.

Two, concerning peace in the Middle East: on Sept. 14, 2023, it was reported that Saudi Arabia, the Arab League, the EU, Egypt, and Jordan would meet on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting on Sept. 18, 2023, to discuss ways to change and restart the Middle East peace process.
 
The Biden administration and congressional lawmakers from both parties are expressing optimism that a transformational agreement of peace and security is on the way, but it could be a few months for that to become a reality.
 
(Update: On Sept. 17, 2023, it was reported that Saudi Arabia has informed the Biden administration that it is suspending all discussions about a normalization agreement with Israel.)
 
(Update: In a speech before the UN General Assembly on Sept. 19, 2023, Pres. Biden said, “The US plans to seek both the normalization of the Jewish state with its Arab neighbors and a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” He is practically begging for the Judgment of God to fall on the U.S.)
 
Three, concerning deceit and corruption in the White House: Pres. Biden has constantly denied involvement and knowledge of Hunter’s business dealings.
 

• Biden is on video boasting that he got a Ukrainian prosecutor fired who was investigating Hunter’s dealings with a company called Burisma by threatening to deny U.S. money to Ukraine.
• There are bank records that show that Biden family members got at least $20 million from foreign entities.
• There is proof that money flowed through more than 20 shell companies, and Pres. Biden was using aliases.
• There is evidence on Hunter’s Laptop from Hell, and now, after many denials (lies), it has been proven that the laptop is Hunter’s.
• One of Hunter’s business partners has said Hunter would call his dad on speakerphone during business meetings so Hunter’s foreign business partners could hear his dad’s voice and what his dad said.
• Whistleblowers in the IRS have testified that the Bidens have been involved in questionable business dealings, and the IRS leadership has covered it up.
• There is more (testimonies, emails, etc.), and an investigation is ongoing.

 
Pres. Biden’s claims that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing appear to be false.
 
Four, concerning accusations of deceit and corruption in the White House, Biden’s denial that there is any evidence to support them, and the decline of America: on Sept. 12, 2023, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced that a Republican committee will open a formal impeachment inquiry into Biden’s activities.
 
An impeachment inquiry will allow Republicans to get information that they have been asking Biden to produce, and he has not, or will not, do it.
 
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said Nancy Pelosi set a precedent when she targeted Pres. Trump; now our House committees will expose the crimes of the Biden family.
 
Democrats have targeted Pres. Trump and many of his associates; now Republicans are targeting the Bidens, and some Democrats think that is wrong.
 
Pandora’s box has been opened, and there is no telling when all of this will end, what will be uncovered, or how much damage is being done to the U.S.
 
Five, concerning natural disasters: on Sept. 15, 2023, it was reported that the death toll from the cyclone that struck Libya five days earlier and collapsed dams has topped 11,300, and more than 10,000 are still missing.
 
Six, concerning a cashless society and tracking all buying and selling: on Sept. 15, 2023, The European Union Times reported:
 
At the recent G20 Summit, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “praised the EU’s strides toward a bloc-wide digital identity app capable of storing a citizen’s personal information, including credit cards, driver’s license, and passport data.”
 
The title of the EU Times article is “EU Chief Says Public Who Refuse WEF Digital IDs Will Be Excluded from Society.”
 
(Note: A digital society and tracking all buying and selling is not the Mark of the Beast—not the same as taking the name, number, or Mark of the Antichrist—but it is that system beginning to come to pass.)
 
(My opinion: The Pre-Trib Rapture is the right view. This means Christians will be Raptured at least three and one-half years before the digital society and tracking all buying and selling develops into the Mark of the Beast.)

Seven, in a different article concerning a cashless society and tracking all buying and selling (the Mark of the Beast): on Sept. 17, 2023, The European Union Times reported:
 

• That “Leaders of the G20 signed a treaty last week to roll out the WEF’s ‘digital IDs’ and ‘cashless societies,’ which will be mandatory for all people who wish to participate in society.”
• That “The G20 leaders have agreed to impose these WEF policies on their populations without giving the public a chance to vote.”
• That EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “advocated for global cooperation to usher in digital IDs.”
• That “The European Union is currently trying to introduce a bloc-wide’ digital identity’ app that would consolidate various personal information, including passports, driver’s licenses, and medical history.”

 
Citizens need to realize that the U.S. is a member of the G20, so this article is saying the U.S. has already signed a treaty to make the World Economic Forum’s (WEF’s) digital IDs and cashless society mandatory for everyone who wants to buy, sell, travel, etc.
 
According to the EU Times article recently, “Most Democrats and Republicans reported concern that the government could control what people spend their money on and potentially turn off access to their bank accounts.”

Eight, concerning pestilence and the possibility that globalists are trying to reduce the population of planet Earth: on Sept. 19, 2023, it was reported that Florida’s Surgeon Gen. is advising against taking the new mRNA Covid-19 vaccine.
 
He does not think it has been properly tested for safety and effectiveness, and without proper testing, there could be dangerous adverse reactions, including cardiac injuries.
 
Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis agrees with his Surgeon General’s advice.
 
(More: On Sept. 19, 2023, it was reported that well-known cardiologist, epidemiologist, author, and more, Dr. Peter McCullough, told Members of the European Union Parliament (MEPs) the Covid-19 vaccines are not safe, and no one should take them.)
 
(More: On Sept. 19, 2023, it was reported that Univ. of So. Carolina Professor Dr. Phillip Buckhaults told the So. Carolina Senate that Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine is contaminated with billions of plasmid DNA bits that could cause rare but serious side effects, including the possibility of cancer.)
 
(My opinion: Some of the people who say it is safe and effective are paid by the pharmaceutical industry or receive campaign contributions from them, so their statements should be considered suspect.)
 
FYI: God does not send anyone to Hell (all of us are born with a sin nature and destined to go to Hell because we sin), but God has provided a way (Jesus) for everyone to go to Heaven (and He is the only way to get there; John 14:6).
 
Finally, are you Rapture Ready?
 
If you want to be rapture ready and go to heaven, you must be born again (John 3:3). God loves you, and if you have not done so, sincerely admit that you are a sinner; believe that Jesus is the virgin-born, sinless Son of God who died for the sins of the world, was buried, and raised from the dead; ask Him to forgive your sins, cleanse you, come into your heart and be your Saviour; then tell someone that you have done this.

We receive reports each day that war is about to burst forth, that the world will change instantly when things suddenly go out of control. Global diplomats and governors will be helpless to assuage the rage into world war once the attacks begin.
 
For example, one front-and-center story that warns of war involves an ages-long trouble spot that has threatened to initiate nuclear conflict.
 
Is China “Massing Forces at Coastal Military Bases” in Preparation for an Invasion of Taiwan?
 
If the Chinese decide to pull the trigger on an invasion of Taiwan, it will instantly become the biggest news story in the entire world. Because the moment that an invasion of Taiwan begins, the United States and China will be at war and nothing will ever be the same again. (Rapture Ready News, September 15, 2023)
 
The Russian invasion into Ukraine and the bellicose rants of some of Vladimir Putin’s military and diplomatic leaders make it clear the former Soviet Empire is again about to raise its ugly head. They threaten nuclear war at almost every opportunity. We can see that things are ramping up for the coming war against Israel, according to Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39.
 
Many pundits—even from the Bible-prophecy perspective—are warning that America might at any moment be invaded from the northern and southern borders by the Chinese and Russian militaries. This is despite the fact that: 1) there is not sufficient evidence to support the supposed threats, and 2) such hyperbole goes against what God’s Word indicates for both the “King of the kings of the east” (Revelation chapters 9 and 16) and Rosh (Russia), as indicated in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39.
 
Both of these bad actors on the war-making stage are destined to do their dastardly worst in other places of the world. Both China and Russia will be dealt with in the proper places and times by the Lord Himself, we are assured.
 
If these diabolists attacked the United States, our military would react, regardless of the feared impotence of the presidential administration and top military of the Joint Chiefs of Staff sort. There are automatic reaction forces in place to, through nuclear submarine retaliation alone, make such attacks by America’s chief enemies a suicide mission for the entire world.
 
This realized and stated, such potential for making a totally destructive war that threatens to end life on earth has its place in Bible prophecy. This truth is wrapped up in the one who will become the world’s last and most powerful evil dictator.
 
Actually it will be the threat of war that will cause the world to hand this wicked man his dictatorial crown. We are told this by Daniel the prophet:
 
And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant. (Daniel 11:21–22) 
 
Daniel went on to say:
 
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. (Daniel 11:36–37)
 
This is in reference, of course, to the “prince that shall come” of Daniel chapter 9. This evil prince—the son of perdition, the man of sin, the Antichrist—will come in by offering peace. He won’t have to win victories to achieve the control he desires. People will willingly give it to him.
 
This, of course, I believe, is verified in the prophecy of the first rider on the white horse of Revelation 6. Antichrist has no arrows, but a bow and crown, which are “given” to him.
 
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. (Revelation 6: 1–2)
 
So this most powerful, evilest despot of all of human history will be, at first, unlike the previous vile dictators on earth. Each of them—like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and all of the ruthless leaders like the Khans of the ancient past—arose to power by murderous, raw aggression. This final one will come with guile and demonically deceptive powers that will make people beg for him to take the crown of dominion they will gladly offer.
 
The question is valid: Why will such a man be not only accepted, but hailed and given complete adulation by most of the earth’s population?
 
The answer, of course, is that he will offer peace. This man, through demonic deceptiveness, will offer to take fear of world-rending nuclear war from the fear-filled thoughts of humankind.
 
We see that fear building even now, in preparation for the time when people will have lost reasoning guided by the Holy Spirit’s influence. The “restrainer” of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 will no longer hold back both the madness of humanity and human emotions. The fear will cause hearts to fail, the Word tells us.
 
This most charismatic geopolitical leader in history will promise peace and prosperity. But it will be “peace, prosperity and the coming holocaust,” as the title of my friend Dave Hunt’s book so marvelously described.
 
Here is a further description by God Himself—through Daniel’s vision—of the coming world leader that might even now be itching to take the reins of global government:
 
And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practice, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. (Daniel 8:23–25)
 
The fear of all-out nuclear war will clutch the reprobate mindset of most of humanity and will cause them to give Antichrist his crown. He won’t have to fire a shot—at least, not at first. His military firepower and much worse will be used later in his satanically driven holocaust we call the Tribulation.
 
Antichrist’s great power and authority will come through the false peace he will promise. That delusion that mesmerizes the masses will bring on the worst time of all human history, according to Jesus (Matthew 24:21). Paul the great apostle said the following:
 
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. (1 Thessalonians 5: 3)
 
You want to escape that time of horror that humanity faces—perhaps in the very near future. Here’s how to go to Christ when He calls God’s family to Himself to escape Antichrist’s dictatorship:
 
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:9–10)

The global debt clock is spinning, reaching a record-high of $307 trillion this week. What does this mean?
 
The amount of debt grew by around eight to ten trillion in just the first quarter of 2023 alone. It was recently reported that “The majority of low-income nations are on the cusp of a debt crisis, sparking fears of global contagion.”
 
The global debt virus has infected the international economic system, and the world is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, especially in many of these low-income nations. US debt just surpassed $33 trillion this week. Last month, Credit card debt, for the first time in American history, eclipsed $1 trillion.
 
The US national debt is projected to exceed 100% of gross domestic product in the next two years. In around six years, the national debt is said to exceed its all-time high of 106% of the gross domestic product, which occurred in 1946, the year immediately following World War II. We know why we had so much debt then, but now it’s simply a result of runaway spending that politicians are not able to curtail.
 
What’s happening now is the convergence of rising debt and rising interest rates, which is a deadly cocktail. 60% of American families live paycheck to paycheck. Think about that—any kind of financial crisis can take six out of ten families under.
 
Credit card debt in the US has been rising at one of the fastest rates in history as more Americans are leaning on their credit in the face of rising prices. We collectively own, as I mentioned earlier, over a trillion dollars. In January alone, credit card debt jumped more than 11%, and with interest rates rising, getting ahead of debt is getting harder and harder.
 
Last year, the average credit card user was carrying a balance of over $5,500, up 13% from the year before in 2021. Even among the 18% of Americans making over $100,000 A year, 37% don’t pay their credit card bill in full every month. The share of credit card users in the United States who carry a balance has increased to 46% from just 39% a year ago.
 
This is threatening our nation’s future. Financial ruin has catastrophic consequences.
 
The cover of Newsweek from several years ago grabbed my attention. The front of the magazine read, “How Great Powers Fall,” showing an upside-down US Capitol standing on its dome. The cover further displayed the quote, “Steep debt, slow growth, and high spending kill empires. And America could be next.”
 
The featured article, written by Niall Ferguson, stated, “An empire at risk—We won the Cold War and weathered 9/11, but now economic weaknesses is endangering our global power.”
 
Providing a history of how empires decline and die, Ferguson explained that the process “begins with a debt explosion and ends with an inexorable reduction in the resources available for the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force.” Debt becomes so high that you can’t spend the money you need to defend yourself. In the cases of Spain, France, and the Ottoman Empire, the explosion of debt brought their empires down.
 
According to the article, “Habsburg Spain defaulted on all or part of its debt 14 times between 1557 and 1696 and succumbed to inflation due to a surplus of New World silver.”
 
“Pre-revolutionary France was spending 62% of royal revenue on debt service by 1788,” the author described.
 
Ferguson noted that the Ottoman Empire went the same way: “interest payments and amortization rose from 15% of the budget in 1860 to 50% in 1875.”
 
The article concluded by saying, “Call it the fatal arithmetic or imperial decline without radical fiscal reform, it could apply to America next.”
 
We don’t think very often of the ruinous consequences of runaway spending and the inability to rein in the massive debt we are compiling as a nation. It threatens our national defense and makes people more willing to surrender freedom to the government. The more debt that individuals have, the more they will be willing to surrender their freedom to the government, if the government will help them get out of that debt.
 
There’s a quote by a best-selling author named Robert Kiyosaki, “When people are struggling financially, they’re more willing to have a government save them, unwittingly exchanging their personal freedom for financial salvation.”
 
It could be that we are looking at a global conspiracy. Do government elites want people to go further into debt because they will become more dependent on a government to save them? And, of course, for the government to do that, there’s going to be a string attached of giving up other freedoms.
 
In our world, which is teetering on bankruptcy with $307 trillion in global debt, think about what will result when the rapture happens. Think about the economic collapse in the United States and globally when all the salt and light in this world is extracted in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.
 
We know that during the tribulation period, the third horseman of the apocalypse is riding a black horse and carrying “a pair of balances in his hand” (Revelation 6:5)
 
Revelation 6:6 KJV – “And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.”
 
A global economic Armageddon is coming. There will be an incredible polarization of wealth as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. What we are seeing today is the setup for the coming of the third horseman.
 
I read a book several years ago by David Jeremiah titled “The Coming Economic Armageddon“. In it, he quotes a passage of Scripture which says:
 
Luke 17:26-30 KJV – “And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.”
 
David Jeremiah went on to say, “The people who were living at the time of the flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah were simply living their everyday lives. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built. These people went on with their love for the good life as if nothing unusual loomed on the horizon. They refused to heed the warnings and kept on doing what they’ve always done until judgment descended, and their window of opportunity closed forever.”
 
“Today, the warning signs are clearer than ever before,” Jeremiah continued. “This should grip all of us with a sense of urgency about examining our lives and making necessary changes in our priorities, [and] should spur us to a greater concern about the lives of those we know and love.”
 
What we see today, happening globally and in our own country, with this debt explosion, is certainly a setup for what’s coming in the times predicted in Revelation chapter six.

I have been part of the prophecy movement for a long time. We’ve had our ups and downs, but for the most part, prophecy teachers have been faithful watchmen on the wall. We have warned, enlightened, kept the focus on Jesus, and helped remind people to be watching for His return. These are important things.
 
A healthy Church discerns the times. Jesus scolded the Pharisees and Sadducees because they could forecast the weather, but they did not grasp the larger issues. They knew “how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times” (Matthew 16:3).
 
Titus 2:13 instructs us to be “looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 4:8 says, “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
 
Followers of Christ should always be “looking for the blessed hope,” and love “His appearing.” Good prophecy teaching helps with both.
 
The 1951 sci-fi movie, “The Thing From Another World,” ends with these dramatic lines about a possible alien invasion. “Every one of you listening to my voice. Tell the world. Tell this to everybody wherever they are. Watch the skies. Everywhere. Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!”
 
I’m not looking for aliens, but my head is lifted up. I hope yours is, too, and that I and my fellow prophecy teachers have helped you see life on earth in its true context.
 
However, I am concerned that many in today’s prophecy movement are competing — not to get out God’s word, but to gain attention for themselves. They buy and sell conspiracy theories like soda pop, always looking for one with a lot of sugar and fizz. But friends, some things don’t need to be sensationalized, and the Second Coming of Christ is one of those things.
 
In today’s marketplace of ideas, it’s easy to feel the need for continual hype. “Gotta get those clicks!” I especially worry when ministers of the Gospel push conspiracy theories that were originated by Jew-hating extremists. Prophecy teachers who purport to love Israel and the Jewish people, too often let their agendas be set by radical conspiracy theorists who are antisemitic to the core.
 
Why? Because those groups have some real doozies of conspiracy theories — the kind that get clicks. Before you teach a conspiracy theory, look at its source. Examine it closely. Don’t believe something just because it backs up your political ideas, vilifies people you don’t like, or reads like the latest thriller. Never repeat a conspiracy theory just to build or hold your audience. A lot of prophecy teachers feel like they’re running down a hill on a railroad track with a train of their own making, chasing them every step of the way. You made your brand by reporting the latest amazing story, and now you have to keep on giving them jaw-droppers to keep them coming.
 
If you are my fellow prophecy teacher, take a step back. The world right now needs you, but not your hype. They need the truth that you know. God’s message is more sensational than your hype. Pray for discernment. Be humble enough to receive correction. Never lie on behalf the One who calls “lying lips… an abomination.” Examine your sources. Ask questions. Don’t add to His word. Don’t fulfill prophecy by becoming a “malicious gossip,” or one who scratches itching ears.
 
Focus on Jesus. He’s sensational enough.

We are bombarded every day with noise. It’s a constant chorus of music, talking, ambient noise, traffic, whatever. Our brains are continuously determining what we actually hear and what we tune out. Additionally, we decide if what we hear is true or false. Intentionally or not, we tend to believe what we hear when it matches our values and worldview. What we hear has spiritual and prophetic significance. Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” This particular verse has a deeper meaning than what on the surface seems like an obvious statement. Let us consider the Ha’azinu, the prophetic song that the Lord instructed Moses to teach the children of Israel.
 
Deuteronomy 32 begins with Moses addressing the children of Israel in song before they are to enter the promised land. He says “Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.” Indeed, Romans 10:18 tracks along with “But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.” The song of Moses, Ha’azinu, means “hear.” It contains the Israelites’ past, present, and foretells of their future exile and redemption in an oracle meant to warn them to stay on the path God had commanded. This was Moses’s final prophecy given to the Israelites before he ascended Mount Nebo to pass on from this life.
 
There is something profoundly spiritual about the songs by Moses. There was the Song of the Sea, sung at the beginning of Mose’s and Israel’s journey at the parting of the Sea of Suf. This song celebrated the Lord bringing them out of Egypt. And then the Ha’azinu sung at the end of Moses life where the journey of the Israelites is recounted and the prophecy of the end of days is foretold. Then in Revelation 15, we are told that those who had attained victory over the beast will have harps and will be singing the “Song of Moses.” Revelation 15:3 says, “And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.”
 
These songs reveal and inform the long journey of the Lord with his people, his faithfulness even when they are not faithful, and his love in restoring all things by defeating the ultimate enemy. These songs lay out God’s plan of redemption, not only for Israel, but also for those who believe in Christ. They are prophetic. They foretell the revelation of Christ as the great high priest of the new covenant, the redeemer. Moses encouraged the people to teach this song diligently to their children, “For this is not a trivial matter for you; on the contrary, it is your life! (Deuteronomy 32:47).” The Ha’azinu, the hearing, is important because faith comes by hearing. We have a choice: To hear the Word and be doers of it or to filter out the word and miss the prophetic destiny that the Lord has reserved for us.

In their later years, God blessed Abraham and Sarah with a child, Isaac, whose name means “laughter.”
 
Isaac was a physical representation of everything sacred to Abraham’s heart, the covenants that God made. He was the physical link to the coming Messiah. And Abraham watched this little child grow into a young boy and then into a strong young man.
 
We don’t know for certain, but perhaps Isaac began to fill the spot that Abraham had previously reserved for God, because the Bible tells us that God tested Abraham.
 
God said to him, “Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you” (Genesis 22:2 NLT).
 
Even then, Abraham had his priorities right. He was willing to give up Isaac to the Lord, believing that, if necessary, He would resurrect him from the dead. Of course, we know the rest of the story. At the last moment, God spared Isaac.
 
And Abraham passed the test.
 
In his book The Pursuit of God, A. W. Tozer commented, “To the wondering patriarch [God] now says in effect, ‘It’s all right, Abraham. I never intended that you should actually slay the lad. I only wanted to remove him from the temple of your heart that I might reign unchallenged there.’ ”
 
Could it be that someone has become an idol in your life? Is there someone who is more precious to you than God Himself?
 
It isn’t that God would take this individual away as much as He wants to rule and reign in your heart.
 
The Bible gives us God’s reflection about how the people of Israel once pursued Him. God said, “I remember how eager you were to please me as a young bride long ago, how you loved me and followed me even through the barren wilderness” (Jeremiah 2:2 NLT).
 
In other words, “Remember how it was when we were still in the honeymoon phase, in the early days?”
 
He continues, “For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me—the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!” (verse 13 NLT).
 
Their first mistake was withdrawing from Him, the fountain of living waters, the One who could satisfy their deepest needs. And then it was only a matter of time until they found broken cisterns, wells dug in the rocks that couldn’t hold water.
 
Let’s heed the warning of Scripture to believers living in the last days. Let’s refuse to allow anyone or anything to become idols in our hearts. The best antidote to idolatry is a passionate love relationship with Jesus Christ. When He is the Lord of our lives and we’re cultivating fellowship with Him, we won’t run after other gods.
 
Any pursuit you go after that takes God’s place in your life won’t satisfy you. Let Him be your Lord. Let Him be your God.
