When talking about Israel, we must always keep in mind that there are not many Jewish, Born-Again Believers today. “HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART" John 12:40 God's “blinding” of His beloved Israelites was not an arbitrary action. As hard as they tried, Israel rarely was able to stay on a Godly path very long. And when their Messiah arrived, God gave them plenty of miracles and ample opportunity to receive the truth. But most of Israel's leadership refused to believe Jesus was the Messiah. So God allowed them to be conquered and dispersed worldwide. Fast forward to today, things are about to change. God, through the prophet Hosea in chapter 6:1-2, prophesied Israel would be dispersed around the world and then be regathered to their land after about 2000 years. And in Ezekiel 37, God revealed a fascinating “dry bones” prediction of their return to their motherland. And right on schedule, slowly a few Jews began returning home in the late 1800s. Then when WWI ended in 1917, the Ottoman Empire was defeated and lost control of the land of ancient Israel. On the winning side was Great Britain who, in essence, gave Israel their land back in what is referred to as the Balfour Declaration. And in 1948, motivated by the murder of millions of Jews in WWII, the United Nations officially granted Israel nation-status...along with Syria, Lebanon, Jordon and others. Israel was immediately attacked by the Muslims but managed to hang on to most of their land. Most notably, Israel lost East Jerusalem and Mount Moriah/Temple Mount—the site where Abraham offered Issac as a sacrifice and the location of the first two Jewish Temples. In 1967, they recaptured Mt. Moriah, God's holiest spot on earth, after again being attacked simultaneously by three Muslim nations. In order to calm the Arab nations when they took over Mt. Moriah with the Muslim Dome of the Rock, General Moshe Dayan, trying to release some tension, allowed the Muslims to "administer" the activities on the Temple Mount. To this day Israel soldiers keep peace on the Temple Mount as the Muslims worship on Fridays in two buildings and the Dome of the Rock. But, as I said, things are about to change with the Rapture. Immediately after our eye-popping getaway into the sky, Israel will: 1) Repel the Ezekiel 38/39 Russian/Iranian invasion. 2) Bring to their knees the Muslim nations surrounding Israel’s borders (Zechariah 12:6). 3) Sign a 7-year peace covenant with 10 nations—five European and five Muslim—guaranteed for 7 years. (Daniel 9:27) The infamous 7-year Tribulation period begins with the signing of this covenant. The architect of this covenant is the New World Leader who 3 1/2 years later is indwelled by Satan—who claims to be the Messiah, thus becoming the false-Messiah or Antichrist. Remarkably, today Israel is energy independent due to her recent massive oil and gas field discoveries. She’s meeting 85% of her fresh water needs from desalination of Mediterranean and Red Sea saltwater (1). And she’s turned the lowest point on earth next to the Dead Sea into a virtual oasis growing fruit and veggies. She’s 100% self-contained. Yet the biggest difference will be Israel having discovered Solomon's massive treasures of gold, silver and precious stones estimated to be worth $100 trillion. I believe all this gold and silver will be the "hook" God uses to entice Russia and Iran to invade—the Ezekiel 38/39 invasion. Russia and Iran lose badly and Israel keeps her riches. From a strength position, Israel demands protection and a New World Leader leads 10 nations to sign a peace treaty specifically for 7 years. So when the Tribulation begins, the victorious Israelis will be living high on the hog in contrast to the rest of the earth’s population that's broke and dying from disease, starvation, drugs and war. The nations of the world will be hugely envious of her food, energy and riches. It will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. Zech. 12:3 God had repeatedly warned Israel never to make peace with her enemies unless they agree to serve Israel as slaves. You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods. They shall not live in your land, because they will make you sin against Me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you. Ex. 23:32 When you approach a city to fight against it, you shall offer it terms of peace. If it agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your forced labor and shall serve you. Deut. 20:10-11 Israel won't heed God's written rules and instead will throw caution to the wind. She'll trust Satan’s New World Leader's peace treaty. It will work in the short run but come back to haunt her 3 1/2 years later. During that first 3 1/2 years of an awkward peace agreement, the devastated and dying world will work in secret behind the scenes to undermine and defeat Israel. In the middle of the Tribulation Israel will be conquered by the World Leader’s army. Israel was warned this would happen. Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Matt. 24:15-16 So these verses show the New World Leader’s army is stationed in and around Jerusalem. The Bible doesn’t give any details of why the Antichrist’s army is in Jerusalem. But suffice it to say, the Jews were trusting the Antichrist and not God for protection. Putting their trust in anything other than God would be the last straw. So the Lord allows them to be massacred—triggered by the "abomination of desolation" event in the newly rebuilt Jewish Temple. Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation. Dan. 11:31 From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Dan. 12:11 But when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Mark 13:14 All that is referring to when the Antichrist’s army begins to kill the fleeing Jews in a massive slaughter. Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. Matt. 24:15-21 Two-thirds of the Jews, millions, die in a single day at the hand of the Antichrist. One-third escape with only the clothes on their backs. It will come about in all the land, declares the LORD, that two parts in it will be cut off and perish; But the third will be left in it. Zech 13:8 Escaping the Antichrist’s hand by the skin of their teeth and stripped of their money, phones, computers, housing and cars, the surviving Jews make their way to the Bozrah area in the mountains of Jordan. The ruins of Petra are also located there. Enter the rock and hide in the dust from the terror of the LORD and from the splendor of His majesty. Is. 2:10 Living in the dirt, dust, caves and tombs, the Lord again providing the Israelites with water and manna in the desert, they will have 3 1/2 years to think about having crucified their God-sent Messiah 2000 years ago. I'm sure it will be a long three and a half years. Taking away all their earthly possessions will give them time to think and reacquaint them with God's promises. Knowing the Antichrist will eventually come after them in the desert, they'll learn to pray for protection and trust God. And at the end the Tribulation the Antichrist's forces will march from Jerusalem for the knock-out blow to rid the world of the Jews forever. So, as you go about your mission, watch where you’re going, keep looking up, and wake up each day with this passage on your mind: Titus 2:11-14 KJV – “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Israel Strikes Terrorist Targets Sunday morning brought the sounds of loud blasts to the Damascus suburb of Qudsaya. Although Israel remains mute on their participation, most believe the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were on the delivering end of the attack. There have been at least 22 strikes by Israel on Syria this calendar year. According to residents of the area, “warehouses of pro-Iran militias” were destroyed in Sunday’s attack. Wednesday night saw a lot of action in the West Bank, as, first, Israeli security arrested a suspect in connection with a drive-by shooting. Second, eight Palestinians were wounded by IDF forces when they attacked Jewish worshippers visiting Joseph’s Tomb in Shechem. Finally, the IDF and Border Police united to destroy an explosives laboratory and warehouse at the Balata refugee camp. Israel’s Economy is Doing Just Fine Instead of running around and crying out, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”, the progressive left media has been warning, “Israel’s economy is collapsing!” What’s the reason for the spike in inflation rates and stumbling of the shekel? Prime Minister Bejamin Netanyahu and his judicial reform, of course. But just like Chicken Little’s prediction of doom was foolish and wrong, so is the media’s. The inflation rate in Israel has been shrinking ever since Netanyahu got in office. The country’s credit rating, which they said would fall sharply, remains at A+. And our unemployment rate continues to be one of the lowest in the world. This anti-Netanyahu campaign is organized and orchestrated, coming from advertising companies owned by multi-millionaires who are determined to topple this government. But, so far, despite all the money they’ve thrown into this hit job, it’s only their finances that have felt the blow. Expanding Global Relationships for Israel Israel’s Foreign Ministry has announced that Paraguay will open its embassy in Jerusalem this year. Somewhat following the lead of their almost-neighbor to the north, Uruguay has said that they will open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem. Israeli relations also continue to grow in Asia. On Wednesday, Israeli minister of Economy and Industry Nir Barkat was in Hanoi to sign an agreement to launch the first direct flights between Israel and Vietnam. The flights between Hanoi and Tel Aviv will launch in October. Israel Launches New High-Tech Submarine There was no fanfare when Israel’s newest submarine was launched from Kiel, Germany. But there was a lot of interest. A variation of the Dolphin-II class, this boat, named the INS Drakon (Dragon), is longer than its predecessors and sports a huge sail. The sail is the tower that rises from the sub’s topside. The speculation is that the reason for its size is that this is the first modern submarine designed to launch missiles from its sail. The missiles are believed to be ballistic, possibly carrying nuclear payloads, and will be fired vertically from the boat. Ukraine Evacuating Settlements after Failed Counterattack Following Ukraine’s failed counterattack against Russian forces, Kyiv is ordering mandatory evacuations in the northeastern Kharkiv region. In Kupiansk, the city military administration issued an announcement requiring Ukrainian citizens to leave dozens of towns and villages near the front. Meanwhile, Stian Jenssen, the chief of staff to the NATO secretary general, ill-advisedly told a panel audience on Tuesday, “I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and get NATO membership in return.” The Kyiv government went ballistic. The next day, Jenssen walked back his statement, saying it was “a mistake”. Assad Opposition Growing Stronger in Syria The cheering you may be hearing from Syria is likely coming from the anti-Assad Sunni rebels. As Russia is forced to regularly and rapidly pull troops out of Syria to send to Ukraine, the rebel attacks on the Syrian army grow stronger and bolder. Another group benefitting from a smaller Russian presence and a distracted Syrian military is ISIS. They have been targeting and massacring Syrian soldiers at an alarming rate. Just last Thursday, after waylaying an army bus near Mayadeen, in Deir Ezzor province, the ISIS terrorists surrounded the vehicle and opened fire. Thirty-three soldiers on board were slaughtered. Finally, on Monday night, Damascus rocked with the sound of a huge explosion as an ammunition warehouse northeast of the city blew apart. No one has claimed responsibility for that blast, but undoubtedly someone is celebrating a job well done. US Department of Treasury Sanctions Lebanese Environmental Group Green Without Borders (GWB) is a Lebanese NGO that claims to promote agribusiness models for small-scale producers. Instead, what GWB and its director, Zuhair Subhi Nahla, promote is the terrorist group Hezbollah. The organization set up outposts near the Israeli border under the guise of environmental research. What these locations actually housed were Hezbollah members, weapons training ranges, ammunition storage, and other terrorism-related facilities. As a result, the US Department of Treasury has issued sanctions on this fake environmental front. The heavy influence of Hezbollah in Lebanon continues to destroy the country. The Syrian lira has lost 60% of its value in less than a month-and-a-half. Today, it was trading at around 16,000 lira to one US dollar. At the airport, there is no electricity. It is currently functioning on a generator. As I mentioned last week, I love the Lebanese people, and my heart breaks for them. I pray that somehow they will find a way to escape from under the thumb of this terrorist organization before Hezbollah and its evil leader, Hassan Nasrallah, throw them into a war with Israel that they can’t possibly win. US Pays Iran for Prisoners The United States does not pay ransom for hostages. As you read this story, just keep repeating that phrase to yourself. In what was not a ransom for hostages transaction, the Biden administration has agreed to release $6 billion from South Korea and five Iranians held prisoner in the US to Iran in exchange for the release of five American citizens who are detained in Tehran. The convoluted justification for this action is something like, “What’s the problem? We’re simply swapping five prisoners for five prisoners…. What? Oh yeah, plus the $6 billion.” Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called this a “dangerous precedent”, then declared what everybody recognizes, “This will only encourage more hostage taking by the Iranian terrorists.” Could it possibly be that this has anything to do with greasing the skids for a new Iran nuclear agreement? Hmmmm…. Iran’s Proxies Attack US Bases in Syria In a story that should be more connected to the previous one than it apparently is, a new Iran-sponsored terrorist organization calling itself the “Popular Resistance in the Eastern Region” claims to have carried out three attacks using rockets and drones on American bases in northeastern Syria. The three attacks, which the group claims to have carried out on Saturday, were directed at US military facilities in the Shadadi, Konikho, and Omar oil and gas fields. Muslim Mob Attacks Churches in Pakistan Angry over allegations that a Christian man had desecrated a Quran, Muslim mobs went on a rampage yesterday attacking churches. One church was burned, while two more were ransacked and damaged. In addition, numerous Christian homes were attacked. The violence increased today with Christians being beaten to death and thrown from heights. The US has close relations with Pakistan. What is the administration in Washington doing to stop this? Where are the human rights groups? Is it because these are only Christians being killed that everyone appears to be ignoring it? Niger Junta to Prosecute Former President for Treason The future for ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum is looking bleak. The ruling military junta has declared that it will prosecute the imprisoned president on charges of treason. Junta spokesperson Colonel Amadou Abdramane stated that they had “gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute the ousted president…for high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger.” Wildfires Ravage Maui The death toll has risen to 106 in the wildfires that devasted the Hawaiian island of Maui. Property loss estimates have reached a minimum of $3.2 billion, with more than 5200 homes destroyed or damaged by flames or smoke. No sooner had the fire died down than out-of-state buyers swept in offering to purchase the land of victims who had lost their houses. As a result, Hawaii Governor Josh Green is seeking to put a moratorium on land purchasers from outside the state. Government Approved News? Bill C-11 that passed not long ago in Canada supposedly only regulates broadcasters, including providers of both traditional broadcasting services and online streaming services. However, social media giants, in their attempt to avoid paying royalties to broadcasters (as is required in the new bill), are simply removing news channels from their platforms. This is a novel way for governments to limit news consumption to only the regulated channels, and, by doing so, to control the content people are consuming. It is not only Canada where this is happening. Governments worldwide are doing all they can to become the final arbiters of what news their citizens can partake in. We read about this in Daniel 9:27, “And he, [the antichrist, referred to in the previous verse as ‘the prince that shall come’] shall confirm the covenant with many for one week [one set of seven years] and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate…” There’s a lot to unpack in this verse:
The first part of this passage tells us that he will “confirm” a covenant with Israel for seven years. Bible translations differ, saying he will “make a covenant,” “compel a covenant,” or “make a strong covenant.” Some take it as a covenant that already exists, while others suggest the antichrist will compel this covenant, bringing the parties to the table and giving them a take-it-or-leave-it deal. Whatever the exact meaning, there’s one thing that’s clear: The antichrist is going to forge a sweeping peace agreement between Israel and her neighbors that’s going to have to do with the Temple Mount area and Israel renewing its sacrifices. This event will mark the start of the seven-year tribulation. Recent events strikingly foreshadow this coming peace compact. August 13th was the third anniversary of the announcement of the Abraham Accords, which were ratified the following month. These arrangements heralded a new beginning of peace in the Middle East as several Arab nations agreed to normalize relations with Israel. The previous five American presidents tried everything they could with Palestinian leaders and failed. Finally, that streak was broken with the Abraham Accords, which resulted in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan all signing peace treaties or normalized relations with Israel. That added to Israel’s peace treaty with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, bringing the current total to six neighboring nations. The “big fish” is clearly Saudi Arabia. Prime Minister Netanyahu has called the normalization of relations with Saudi Arabia and Israel “the deal of the century.” Last week, a top Israeli diplomat said that a normalization agreement would be “a historic opportunity for a peace process that will change the face of the Middle East and the whole world.” That’s a dramatic statement in light of Bible prophecy. A lot of headlines about this are very striking to me:
While some say there’s no fixed timetable, the US wants to wrap all of this up by next March. You can imagine the political reasons. This would be a huge feather in the cap for President Biden to be able to be in the middle of this deal or take credit for it. There are several serious obstacles to all of this. One is the current turmoil in Israel. Saudi Arabia will likely wait on the sidelines until Israel can figure things out internally. The other major obstacle, as always, is the Palestinian question. What’s going to happen with the Palestinians? What’s Israel going to have to give up? What’s Saudi Arabia going to demand to have normalized relations? Last Saturday, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Jordan presented his credentials to begin serving as Saudi Arabia’s first-ever non-resident ambassador to Palestine. Is this simply Saudi Arabia checking a box with the Palestinians before normalizing relations with Israel? The New York Times reported: Saudi Arabia has appointed its first envoy to the Palestinian administration in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, a move widely seen as linked to efforts led by the United States to forge diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel. The announcement came amid escalating efforts by the United States to establish formal relations for the first time between Israel and Saudi Arabia. It also followed speculation in Israel that Saudi Arabia — which has long opposed enacting formal ties until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been resolved — might now be prepared to do so without Israel’s providing the Palestinians with greater autonomy. The fact that Saudi Arabia has placed this envoy in the Palestinian Authority area suggests they may be backing off of making demands that Israel give the Palestinians greater autonomy. This opens the door and paves the way for this agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia to take place. There are a lot of moving parts to this agreement. The US additionally wants Saudi Arabia to roll back some of its growing ties with China, which of course, would help the United States. This peace process may be complicated and fraught with difficulties, but the fact that it is even being discussed is astounding. Who would have believed a few years ago this would even be a possibility? But now here we are, with this prophetic scenario lining up. The next event on God’s prophetic calendar is the rapture of the church. Sometime after the rapture, the antichrist is going to catapult onto the world scene, and his major breakthrough will be to broker this comprehensive peace deal for Israel that allows the Jews to rebuild the temple and offer sacrifices. The antichrist will probably get the Nobel Peace Prize and be the Times Person of the Year. We’re not there yet, but here on the third anniversary of these Abraham Accords, with momentum building for peace between Saudi Arabia and Israel, the stage is more set than ever before. The rapture will move the final pieces into place. The antichrist will rise into the chaos and aftermath of the rapture to bring calm, and part of that will be this Middle East peace deal. We are witnessing the setup for that coming treaty right before our eyes. I don’t know about you, but I consider it a great privilege to live in these times. It’s incredible to see the things that are prophesied so clearly in the Bible. My prayer for myself and all of us is that we will live faithfully in light of the rapture because all the signs are pointing to it coming very soon. Many people believe that another historic financial disaster is coming and that it will absolutely devastate the U.S. economy. Earlier this week, I wrote about an investor named Michael Burry that has actually bet 1.6 billion dollars that the stock market is going to crash. He made all the right moves in 2008, and he fully intends to be proven right once again in 2023. Of course current conditions definitely resemble 2008 in so many ways. The residential housing market is so dead right now, and commercial real estate prices are plummeting at a very frightening pace. Unfortunately, officials at the Federal Reserve are making it quite clear that they are not done strangling the economy. This week, mortgage rates jumped above the 7 percent mark to the highest level that we have seen in more than 20 years… Mortgage rates surpassed 7% this week, hitting the highest level in more than two decades. The average rate on the popular 30-year fixed mortgage increased to 7.09% this week, up from 6.96% the week prior, according to Freddie Mac’s release on Thursday. That’s the highest point since the first week of April 2002 and marks just the third time rates have exceeded 7% since then. The last times were in October and November of last year, when the rate reached 7.08%. Needless to say, high mortgage rates have been crippling the housing market in recent months. At the midpoint of this year, existing home sales were down a whopping 18.9 percent from the same time in 2022… Total existing-home sales1 – completed transactions that include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – receded 3.3% from May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.16 million in June. Year-over-year, sales fell 18.9% (down from 5.13 million in June 2022). There are certainly lots of people out there that would like to buy homes, but thanks to how high mortgage rates have become they simply cannot afford to do so. Housing has become extremely unaffordable in this country. According to Redfin, the percentage of teachers that can afford to buy a home close to the school where they work has fallen to just 12 percent… The number of teachers who can afford a reasonably priced home in their school district nationwide has collapsed to just 12%, down from 17% last summer and 30% in 2019, amid the worst housing affordability crisis in a generation, according to data from Redfin. Redfin’s analysis of median teacher salaries for 2022 across 50 major cities for over 70,000 PreK-12 public and private schools revealed no teacher in San Jose and San Diego could afford homes within “commuting distances” to their respective school, which means home and work are 20 minutes during typical rush hour conditions. So much damage has already been done. But apparently officials at the Federal Reserve believe that even more carnage is necessary, because they are indicating that more rate hikes are on the table… Most Federal Reserve officials signaled during their July policy-setting meeting that high inflation still poses an ongoing threat that could necessitate additional interest rate hikes this year. Minutes from the U.S. central bank’s July 25-26 meeting released Wednesday showed that central bank officials observed that inflation remains well above the Fed’s 2% target — and that policymakers need to see “further signs that aggregate demand and aggregate supply were moving into better balance to be confident that inflation pressures were abating.” No. Don’t do it. Even if rates stay at current levels, we are headed for extreme pain. Raising rates even higher would just be suicidal. But it looks like they are going to do it anyway, and that could push mortgage rates up to the 8 percent level… Economists have predicted mortgage rates could go above 8 percent if the economy continues to show signs of strength and the US Federal Reserve decides to raise interest rates again. Mortgage Rates have not hit such levels since 2000, according to data compiled by Freddie Mac. Do officials at the Fed actually believe that our system can handle such high rates? Unless the Fed changes course, the housing market is going to absolutely implode. And of course the commercial real estate market is already imploding. The chaos that is already transpiring is putting an enormous amount of strain on our financial institutions, and Fitch is warning that we could soon see sweeping rating downgrades in the banking industry… A Fitch Ratings analyst warned that the U.S. banking industry has inched closer to another source of turbulence — the risk of sweeping rating downgrades on dozens of U.S. banks that could even include the likes of JPMorgan Chase. The ratings agency cut its assessment of the industry’s health in June, a move that analyst Chris Wolfe said went largely unnoticed because it didn’t trigger downgrades on banks. In many ways, I feel like I am watching a repeat of 2008. Officials at the Fed can clearly see everything that is happening, but they just keep insisting on making things even worse. So I hope that you have been preparing for turbulent times, because things are going to get crazy. Sadly, the truth is that most Americans are not prepared for tougher times. In fact, one recent survey discovered that 72 percent of Americans are not financially secure… For many Americans, payday can’t come soon enough. As of June, 61% of adults are living paycheck to paycheck, according to a LendingClub report. In other words, they rely on those regular paychecks to meet essential living expenses, with little to no money left over. Almost three-quarters, 72%, of Americans say they aren’t financially secure given their current financial standing, and more than a quarter said they will likely never be financially secure, according to a survey by Bankrate. Many of those people will lose their jobs during this new economic crisis, and because they don’t have any sort of a financial cushion to fall back on many of them will also end up losing their homes. Delinquency rates are already starting to move higher, and that should deeply alarm all of us. But what we have experienced so far is just the tip of the iceberg. So brace yourselves for what is ahead, because this ride is only going to get bumpier from here. Daily Jot: The American Chronicles: The Stone Werks - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com At the foot of Maryland’s South Mountain is historic Boonsboro, population about 3,700. It’s noted for its proximity to several Civil War battlefields, one being Antietam (or Sharpsburg), which was the bloodiest battle of the war. Another was the battle of South Mountain. Boonsboro actually had two skirmishes within its own village streets and it served as a hospital for the wounded from other battles. Romance novelist Nora Roberts settled there after getting married. Roberts still owns property in the town. It’s a quaint town with a few things going on, mainly kind of a bedroom community to more populated areas near Baltimore and Washington, DC. But this is the story of a young American couple. Elisabeth and August Stone are in their early thirties. But when they were still in their 20s, and August was graduating from nearby Shepherd University, they were planning their lives together. They are both gifted in the arts—photography, staging, baking, cooking. It seemed they had so many irons in the fire, it would be difficult to find success. But they got married and started working at it together, day and night. There were weddings and banquets. There were sales of wonderfully-made baked goods. Elisabeth and August were piecing together a business through creativity and good old American stick-to-itiveness. Then they came up with an idea to own a coffee and baked goods shop. After a good amount of research, seeking wise counsel—they are both Christ-centered—they chose the sleepy little town of Boonsboro. Months went by in planning and preparation, selecting the storefront along main street, getting permits, putting together menus and buying equipment piece by piece, and gathering up tables and chairs. There were times that they had to overcome both financial and emotional challenges along the way. But they finally got everything approved and started moving into their new shop in the midst of historic Boonsboro. At first, they couldn’t afford to hire anyone to help. They both were working night and day as their other businesses were still taking up a good amount of time Today, it’s coming up on their six-year anniversary. Stone Werks Coffee and Sweets is open Tuesday through Saturday. Closed on Sunday in keeping with their faith tradition. They’ve had to hire help. There are lines for their coffee and baked goods. Both Stones are accomplished at baking, brewing coffee and hospitality. They have set an example of how a godly young couple with tenacity, skill, work ethic and just downright American goodness can succeed even when the economy and pandemics present what seem to be insurmountable challenges. Their faith has served them well as they truly are what the Apostle Peter described as “living stones” and examples of 1 Peter 4:9 of being “hospitable to one another without complaint.” If you are ever in Boonsboro, take a minute to look in on Elisabeth and August, you’ll be glad you did. This wasn’t meant as a compliment. But in a way, it was. It was a recognition that Paul and Silas were making a dramatic impact on their world. The first-century church consisted of a relatively small group of Christians whose numbers were not large like ours are today. Yet in spite of that, they made a remarkable difference in their culture. We need Christians today who will take a stand for what is right, because it seems as though our culture is affecting us more than we are affecting our culture. Today with so many people naming the name of Christ, our impact on the world appears to be null and void. We wonder what difference we’re really making. We’re allowing secular attitudes to find their way into the church and into our lives as Christians. People say they are Christians, yet they live in immorality, have sex before marriage and outside of marriage, play with drugs, get drunk, steal, sue one another, and divorce each other. But do you know what our world really needs to see? They need to see flesh-and-blood Christians who are living the Christian life in the same neighborhood where they live, in the same place where they work, and at the same school they attend. They need to see the real thing. In short, they need to see you. God can use you, just as He used believers in the first-century church. Maybe you’re not a preacher, but you can proclaim the gospel message through your life and through your words. You can make a dramatic impact on your world.
