This [article] will help you examine what the Rapture is, defend it biblically, and explain its personal and practical importance. What is the Rapture? The Rapture is the biblical prophetic event where all who have put their trust in Christ, living and deceased, will suddenly be caught up from earth, be joined with Christ in the air, and taken to heaven. Paul describes the Rapture in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 KJV – “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” The Meaning of “Rapture” Rapture is derived from the Latin translation of 1 Thessalonians 4:17, which translates the Greek harpazo (to catch up or carry away) as rapiemur from the Latin rapio. The Greek harpazo occurs fourteen times in the New Testament with four variations of meaning, each of which contributes to our understanding of what Paul is describing in verse 17: “Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with [the dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.” First, harpazo can mean “to carry off by force.” Christ will use His power to remove living and deceased believers from the last enemy, death. Second, harpazo can mean “to claim for oneself eagerly.” Christ purchased us with His blood, and He will return to claim those who are His. Third, harpazo can mean “to snatch away speedily.” The Rapture will occur “in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Corinthians 15:52). Fourth, harpazo can mean “to rescue from the danger of destruction.” This meaning supports the idea that the Rapture will save the Church from experiencing the terrors of the seven-year Tribulation. This coming event is the first part of Christ’s two-part return to earth. First, He’ll remove the Church from the world. Second, seven years later, He’ll establish His Kingdom on earth. For every prophecy in Scripture about Christ’s first advent, there are eight about His second. The 260 chapters of the New Testament contain 318 references to the Second Coming of Christ. The Rapture Is Different from Christ’s Second Coming Will the Rapture occur at Christ’s Second Coming? The short answer is, “Yes, but….” The Rapture sets in motion the End-Time events leading to Christ’s Second Coming. The two stages, Rapture and Return, will be separated by a seven-year Tribulation on earth. The purpose of the Rapture is to spare Christ’s own from the horrors of the Tribulation according to Revelation 3:10. The prophets saw what appears to be the Tribulation—“the time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7)—not the Rapture. But that is not surprising; they didn’t differentiate clearly between the First and Second Advents of Christ. The prophets “inquired and searched carefully” (1 Peter 1:10-11), but they saw more of the big picture than the details. And they didn’t see the Church at all, which is who the Rapture affects. The prophets saw the future like seeing successive mountain peaks through a telephoto lens. They saw the peaks (events), but not the distance that separates them. Three New Testament passages tell us about the Rapture: John 14:1-3; 1 Corinthians 15:50-57; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians are the most complete and form the basis for this discussion. First, we must note that Paul gained his understanding of the Rapture via special revelation from God—he called it a “mystery” in 1 Corinthians 15:51, meaning a truth not previously revealed. The revelation was “by the word of the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:15). Second, Paul shared this revelation in order to meet a practical concern of the Christians in Thessalonica. They were concerned about the fate of Christians who died before Christ’s Second Coming (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) and about the timing of the Rapture—whether it had already happened (2 Thessalonians 2:1-2). Three Reasons the Rapture Could Happen Today Reason 1: The Rapture is a signless event. Unlike the Second Coming, no signs will precede the Rapture. This is called the doctrine of imminency—that is, the Rapture is imminent; it could happen at any moment. Specifically, nothing in God’s prophetic program must take place as a prerequisite to the Rapture. Things may happen but nothing must happen. That means we don’t know when it could happen. It could be today or years from today. Without any warning, Jesus Christ will return to rapture His saints and take them to heaven. Christians must live prepared lives, ready to meet their Savior at any moment. Reason 2: The Rapture is a surprise event. While many through the years have predicted the date of the Rapture and Jesus’ Second Coming, Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:36-39 should be taken literally: No one, including Jesus and the angels, knows the time of His return. Only God the Father knows. Not knowing when Jesus will come for His Church causes us to be ready at all times. Reason 3: The Rapture is a sudden event. Paul wrote that the Rapture will take place “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1 Corinthians 15:52). “Twinkling” likely refers to the amount of time it takes for light, traveling at 186,000 miles per second, to be reflected on the retina of one’s eye. In less than a nanosecond, the Lord will call believers to Himself! 1 Thessalonians 4:16 says, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.” These are not three distinct sounds, but one sound described three different ways. This sound will be like a shout, ringing with commanding authority like the voice of an archangel. It will also be like the blare of a trumpet in its volume and clarity. And the sound will be heard only by those who have trusted Christ as Savior. Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come forth!” in John 11:43. His shout of “Come forth!” at the Rapture will not name a single individual, but will be heard by every believer in every grave around the world. At the moment of the Rapture, God’s people from every era—the disciples, the martyrs of the ages, your godly ancestors, and many more—will rise from their graves. The Rapture Only Involves Christians Each of the three major passages that teach about the Rapture indicate that it involves believers only (including innocent children too young to believe). Anyone who does not trust Jesus as their Lord and Savior will not be raptured into the Lord’s presence and will be left to suffer the horrors of the Tribulation. Jesus’ words in John 14:1-3 were spoken to His disciples—men who were obviously believers. He assured them that He would prepare a place for them in His Father’s house; they were members of the family of faith in the same way Christians are today. “I will come again and receive you to Myself” (verse 3) describes what we call the Rapture—the uniting of Jesus Christ with His faithful followers. In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul talked about “those who are Christ’s at His coming” (verse 23). Verse 1 informs us that the passage was written to “brethren,” and verse 58 concludes the passage by talking about abounding in the work of the Lord, an obvious reference to Christian believers. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Paul refers to believers as “brethren” (verse 13), as those who “believe that Jesus died and rose again” (verse 14), and as the “dead in Christ” (verse 16). These passages are clear: the Rapture is restricted to believers. Only those who are followers of Christ will be taken up into heaven when He returns. Three Ways the Rapture Can Impact Our Life Today The Rapture can change our life; it is a source of personal comfort and hope. Paul wrote to the Thessalonians about it to ease their concerns about their departed loved ones. Death is not final. The resurrection of believers who have died will reverse the effects of death. All who have lost loved ones to the sting of death can be comforted in the knowledge that they will see them again. But it is also a source of strength. Jesus promised His disciples, on the night He was arrested, that He would return for them (John 14:1-3). It is no wonder that Paul told the Thessalonians to comfort themselves with the truth concerning the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:18). The Rapture can impact our life now, in three ways, while we wait for it to happen. We can live with expectation. The letter from Paul to Titus puts into words how the expectation of the Rapture should impact our life: Titus 2:11-14 KJV – “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and pur” We can live with dedication. I am told that Robert Murray M’Cheyne, a brilliant young Scottish preacher who died at age 29 in 1843, wore a watch with the words “The Night Cometh” engraved on its face. Every time he checked his watch, he was reminded that time is marching on. We won’t always have time to win souls for Christ or to consecrate our own life for His service. The apostle John exhorted his readers “not to be ashamed before Him at His coming” (1 John 2:28). The imminent return of Jesus for His Church is life’s greatest stimulus for living a dedicated life. We can live with preparation. Jesus warned that He is “coming quickly” (Revelation 22:12). That means we should live every day as if He were coming that day. But will we be ready? Will we be found with heart and hands dedicated to serving Him at the moment we see Him face to face? Even more important, have we committed ourselves by faith to Christ, so we are assured of being part of His Church that is called into His presence at the Rapture? When the Rapture occurs, there will be no opportunity to decide. Be sure that you have said “Yes” to Christ so that you will be prepared to rejoice at His appearing. I noticed that the RI moved very little each year, with increases of 8, 6, 5, and 9 points during this time period. About twenty years ago, we could see a 30-point move in a single year. The lack of upward movement in the Rapture Index is a very common complaint that we receive. People expect the RI to edge higher and higher with each passing year. Here is part of an email that someone recently sent to Terry: First, I love the Rapture Ready website, but I find your “Rapture Index” way off as it’s the same as 2 years ago, which totally is not reflective of the Scriptures and the events we are currently experiencing! The events we are currently witnessing in the world & US are truly confirmation of what the Scriptures say… which in NO way compare with the Rapture Ready “Rapture Index.” Jesus said that end-time activity would increase like labor pains. There have been several times when I realized we haven’t had a major earthquake in several months. I thought to myself that a big one should be coming soon, and a few days later, a large earthquake did strike somewhere on the planet. Prophetic events do not always occur like clockwork. We went several years without a single hurricane impacting the US coastline, and then the tropical cyclone drought was suddenly broken with a rush of activity. In just a few short years, we set several records in relation to hurricanes. During the 2020 hurricane season, Louisiana saw the most ever landfalling cyclones with five total storms. It would be foolish to think that the following year would bring a set of six cyclones to Louisiana. However, Hurricane Ida did occur in 2021 and caused catastrophic damage to the state’s electric grid. Many people probably regretted not taking Hurricane Katrina as a warning sign to consider leaving the state. Several insurance companies have decided to drop their hurricane coverage for Gulf Coast states. This decision stems from their assessment that insuring homes and businesses against tropical storm damage has become unprofitable and too great of a financial risk. I live about 400 miles from the Gulf and am paying for past storms. In a four-year period, my home insurance premium has gone up by 40 percent. The Rapture Index categories are not a factor in a long-term average. They are based on a constant state of motion. If things quit happening, the index will drop like a rock. The record low was set in 1993 when everything related to prophecy went on hold. Today, I’m amazed that it was once possible for the RI to drop down to 53 points. When I was in the Air Force, I was deployed to Saudi Arabia for 45 days without any internet connection. When I got back, it only took me a few days to update the site. The record high was set in 2016 and tied last year. I am unsure if we will ever see the 190 range. When the rapture takes place, many categories will be rated 3 or less. Some RI categories contradict each other. If we have floods all over the world, drought may not rank as high because of the abundance of moisture. Years ago, I coined the phrase, “Economic hardship is the mother’s milk of prophet progression.” Financial troubles are not necessarily a sign of the rapture. Jesus said he was coming for the Church at a time of general tranquility. When I created the RI in 1987, I naturally expected it to rise right up to the point where the rapture would occur. However, I now understand that the flatline pattern observed over the last decade is a stronger indication of the approaching rapture. It appears we’ve hit the upper limit and have stayed here because world events cannot proceed until the blessed hope takes place. I’ve wondered if the RI’s productive years are behind it. There is a small possibility that God could hit the snooze alarm, and the RI could come crashing down, with the rapture many years down the road. I’m encouraged by the reality that there are just too many events aligning with prophecy happening at the same time. About 200 years ago, prophecy watchers were puzzled by the Bible saying that Israel would be reborn and the Antichrist would have a global currency. Today, as in the days of Noah, apathy is our greatest enemy. “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:37-39). If these men believe that the U.S. economy is going to thrive and their companies will continue to grow, it would make sense to just sit back and let their portfolios increase in value. But instead they have all determined that this is a perfect time to sell. And I can definitely understand that. Over the past year, the stocks of all three companies have soared to unprecedented heights… Meta stock has soared by 186% over the past year, JPMorgan is up nearly 30%, and Amazon has surged close to 90%. All three companies are trading close to record highs. These men didn’t become filthy rich by being stupid, and selling at the peak of the bubble certainly wouldn’t be stupid. But is that the only reason why these billionaires are feverishly liquidating shares? In recent weeks, much has been made of the fact that Zuckerberg and his wife are constructing an absolutely massive survivalist compound in Hawaii. The following comes from Time Magazine… Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, co-founder and co-CEO of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, plan to build a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter on their Hawaii ranch with its own energy and food supplies, according to a Wired investigation published earlier this month. The plan is that the shelter’s door will be made of metal and filled in with concrete—common in bunkers and bomb shelters, the news outlet reported in its extensive article citing planning documents and interviews. So why is Zuckerberg going to such effort? Does he know something that the rest of us do not? Yes, it is true that Zuckerberg has always been more than a little bit eccentric. But many other ultra-wealthy individuals are also preparing for doom. In fact, Sam Altman and Peter Thiel both seem to be extremely alarmed about the times that are approaching… To keep himself safe, Altman keeps a stash of the usual Doomsday prepper fare including antibiotics and water as well as some more unusual goods. He told the founders of the startup Shypmate, per the New Yorker: “I try not to think about it too much. But I have guns, gold, potassium iodide, antibiotics, batteries, water, gas masks from the Israeli Defence Force, and a big patch of land in Big Sur I can fly to.” He also said he and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel have an “arrangement” to flee to one of Thiel’s luxury properties in New Zealand in the event the End of the World comes about. Why would Sam Altman need guns and gas masks? And why would he need potassium iodide? Exactly what does he expect to happen? Other billionaires are going to even greater extremes. Al Corbi, the founder and president of Strategically Armored & Fortified Environments, says that he is currently working on an “island fortress” for one client that will have a very deep moat around it filled with highly flammable liquid… Corbi — who worked on the palatial 27-floor, $4.8 billion Mumbai residence of business mogul Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries — reveals to THR that his most spectacular project, due to be completed in 2025, is an island fortress created on a 200-acre property in the U.S., with cutting-edge tactical systems. “The shelter can withstand a blast one mile from ground zero,” says Corbi. “But that was almost incidental. The client [a business mogul] was saying, ‘I want to make sure that no one can get to my family,’ so we wound up literally building a 30-foot-deep lake [around the compound] skimmed with a lighter-than-water flammable liquid that can transform into a ring of fire. The only access to the island is a swing bridge.” I have to admit, that sounds pretty cool. I just hope that they have figured out how to keep the fire from escaping the moat. The property will also have “water cannons that can take down parachuters”… Also at Corbi’s project, “there are water cannons that can take down parachuters, Apache helicopters, whatever’s coming your way 500 feet in the air,” he says. “Then we took all the dirt removed for the lake to literally build a mountain as natural fortification around the property. And we cut a tunnel through with flame-throwers, gassing systems, a steel wall that closes midway that could stop a 16-wheeler going 80 miles an hour, and bollards at both ends.” Okay, so I have a question. Why go to so much trouble? If life is going to continue more or less like it has for the past few decades, why waste so much money? Obviously the client that is paying for this island fortress is envisioning that the world is going to go mad. And I agree with that assessment. In fact, I believe that the most chaotic chapters in all of human history are ahead of us. The billionaires that I have discussed in this article would not see eye to eye with me on all of the specifics, but they are certainly preparing for apocalyptic times too. What about you? One hesitates to even tune into the latest Internet or cable news program and watch the updated saga of suffering. Sure, we were warned. Those last days were to be “perilous times.” But who knew? Who could have warned us about the blood-soaked details? Then modern technology brings it all home to us in real time. A weariness has set in as the weight of the world’s sin presses down so heavily that it is harder and harder to keep going. We feel like we are climbing a steep mountain with a heavy load. Up is down, black is white, evil is good. Political correctness will eventually destroy the planet. We’re tired of the Keystone Kops running the show in nearly every capital of the world. Those of us anticipating Christ’s return have a great advantage. We listen for a trumpet in the midst of the carnage. If we listen carefully, we think we hear the hoof beats of the four horsemen in the distance. The end is nearis not a saying on a sandwich board worn by some homeless person marching down Main Street. Rather, it is the hope of the believer. Most people call it the Rapture. And no, it’s not an escape hatch. But if you believe this, one Christian outfit calls us “zombie Christians.” Christian Today magazine is not secular, it is Christian but with a Leftist bent. It has more of an ecological agenda than a spiritual agenda, and their version of the world ending is because we’re killing the planet. The apocalypse to them is climate change. I’m quoting a few paragraphs from an article they published in 2015: “It’s easy to point a finger at the fundamentalist fringe who have been mass marketing the apocalypse through films like ‘A Thief in the Night’ and ‘Left Behind.’ These are based on weakly-constructed theology of a Rapture where believers are beamed up to Heaven to avoid catastrophes awaiting the planet.” The magazine continues, “Their theological version is called Premillenialism. You don’t have to live in the Bible belt to be affected by this way of thinking. Many of us started our Christian journey with a version of the gospel message that emphasizes escapist eschatology. Sadly, with the best intentions, Christians have tended to deliver an altered and edited gospel that is robbed of its scale and supremacy, producing zombie Christians that are merely souls waiting for Heaven…..” Sure. Bring it on. Heaven, that is. In the meantime, tell me more about this good news. We can only tolerate looking around if we also look up. The Bible says the world will only have “distress with perplexity” as we enter the end-of-days. (Luke 21:28) That means our headlines won’t be getting better this side of Heaven. Disengage. Disconnect. Despair. Without God and the hope of Heaven, what other options are there? Noted author and co-founder of the Rapture Ready website, Terry James, writes in an article titled, Pastors, Be Forewarned, “When one gently probes one or the other of the Bible-believing/preaching pastors with the question, ‘Do you preach prophecy?’ the answers are along the same line. It’s my experience, and that of others who ask the question, that 95% of those asked say something like the following.”
Terry James continues, “Despite the fact that there are those who are overly speculative in their views of Bible prophecy, the following must be said. To the pastors of America who claim the Bible as the inspired, inerrant Word of the Living God but callously ignore its prophetic content–be forewarned. “Your excuses/arguments won’t stand the test of the Bema — the Judgment Seat of Christ. You will be held accountable by the very Lord you proclaim you love so much — the same Lord about whom the angel told John: ‘for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.’ ” (Revelation 19:10) James says, “That same Jesus gave us the Olivet Discourse, during which He laid out general and specific things to come. The Gospel accounts give Christ’s commandment of what to do about the many prophesied things He had just foretold: ‘And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.’ (Mark 13:37) “Prophecy makes up at least 27% of the Bible. Half of that 27% has been fulfilled, with half yet to be fulfilled. Anyone with spiritual ears to hear and spiritual eyes to see is capable of following the Lord’s command: ‘And when you see these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:28) “Certainly, if God calls people to be pastors-shepherds of His flock — He equips them to feed the flock His whole Word, not just parts the pastor selects as important, while summarily dismissing the other parts of God’s Word.” The author concludes, “The world is in an end-times rage. The seas and waves of humanity are roaring with distress and perplexity. Violence fills the whole earth. “Israel stands alone in the global spotlight as the most-hated nation on the planet. The world is in economic chaos, headed for total collapse. All the while, technology is progressing geometrically in ways that will one day provide earth’s last tyrant with the satanically-endowed ability to enslave most all people on this fallen sphere.” Many Christians want to understand the end-time rage the world is in if it helps them to better keep an eye on the sky. If we are “zombies” as that magazine states, we are proud of it. We are not ashamed to say we can’t wait for Heaven. The King is, indeed, coming. Somebody get very excited about it. Thankfully, this world is not our home. Daily Jot: Stupidocrisy: AOC and recreational sex - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com One of the most absurd claims about bodily autonomy recently came from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), in an appearance on MSNBC’s February 23 edition of “Alex Wagner Tonight.” Having to string together what she said to make sense of it, Ocasio-Cortez was saying that Republicans want to ban abortion because they want to control “recreational sex” and create a “patriarchal theocracy.” She claimed that Republicans, as evidenced by the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade and sending it back to the individual states, want to ban contraception, “explicitly” control women’s bodies and recreational sex. In doing so, she said Republicans want to establish a patriarchal theocracy. What? Ocasio-Cortez said, “And going beyond that, they also want to control what they call recreational sex. Recreational sex! This is so clearly a patriarchal theocracy that has embodied itself in the DNA of an entire political party in the United States of America. And as women, and as any nonbinary and queer person in this country, they must be defeated. There should never be room for this kind of control by force over another person’s body in this country… Republicans are taking women’s bodies by force, and we cannot let them do. It has to come to an end.” In other words, it’s Republicans that want to control our sex lives and establish a male-dominated sexual religion and take women’s bodies by force. I guess what she means is that Republicans have a religion of rape. That a US Representative would think such is nothing less than insane. If we remember right, it is Ocasio-Cortez and her ilk that want to force global acceptance as normal perverse sexual acts such as homosexuality, transsexuality, transgenderism, and who knows what else. Their religion, or “theocracy” is accept these perversions or be shunned, censored, labeled, jailed or designated as a terrorist (recall Loudoun County, VA parents who dared stand up to unisex bathrooms where girls were raped by a boy posing as a women). Sexual anarchy is their religion. And they make no bones about ridiculing Holy Scripture that speaks against the immoral acts these people worship. What Ocasio-Cortez is implying that removing abortion as a birth control method is akin to Republicans forcing women to have some sort of morals regarding sex. What about the life of the unborn? Ocasio-Cortez is saying that Republicans in particular should have no say over a woman’s body. But she was also part of the crowd that wanted forced lockdowns and vaccinations during COVID, which was the pharmaceutical theocracy that tried to take all of our bodies by force. How is it a violation of bodily autonomy by preventing taking the life of the unborn and it’s not a violation of bodily autonomy being forced to take an experimental drug that doesn’t work? Jeremiah 51:7 gives an end time warning: “Babylon was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD, making the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine; therefore the nations have gone mad.” We are to flee from such. People like Ocasio-Ortez are drunk on the wine of passion for immorality, and are insane with such. However, the devil doesn’t want us to know this. He wants us to think that we can only approach God when we have done well. He wants us to believe that if we have been walking closely with the Lord, then we can pray. But if we’ve fouled up, we can’t. For example, maybe you’ve had a disagreement with your husband or wife. You think, “Maybe we should pray before we go to bed. But that would be hypocritical because we just had a fight. How can we pray after we’ve had a fight?” Or maybe you’ve thought, “I can’t pray because I lost my temper in this situation,” or “I can’t pray because I just had an impure thought.” That kind of thinking is from the devil himself. The Bible calls him “the accuser of our brothers and sisters” (Revelation 12:10 NLT). And as you prepare to go into God’s presence in prayer, he’ll say, “Do you think you are worthy to approach God? You call yourself a Christian! What a hypocrite you are! What a failure and disappointment to God you are!” But he is a liar. And when Satan talks to you about God, he lies. He lies to you because he wants to keep you away from God. He also wants to keep you out of the Word of God because he knows that is where the power is. That is how changes will take place in your life. When the Spirit of God convicts us, He will use the Word of God, in love, to seek to bring us back into fellowship with the Father. In contrast, when Satan accuses us, he will use our own sins in a hateful way to drive us away from fellowship with the Father. God’s Spirit will make us aware of what we’ve done wrong, but He always will bring us back to the cross. When we have messed up, we need to go to the cross. When we have done something wrong, we need to go to the cross. We always need to go to the cross and to God in prayer. The devil wants to keep us away from God, and his accusations always will drive us away from the cross. God’s Spirit, however, always will bring us to the cross.
