This sounds so much like today! I couldn’t get that thought out of my head as I read the John 6 account of Jesus’ interaction with the Jews the day after His feeding of the five thousand. How did those in the crowd on that day respond to Jesus’ plea that they believe in Him? They asked, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?” (John 6:30). What more did they need to see? Jesus had just fed a multitude with “five barley loaves” and “two fish.” The total number of people could easily have been close to fifteen thousand since the number “five thousand” just included the men. Even satisfying the hunger of a few hundred people with such little food would’ve been a significant miracle, but to feed so great a gathering was over-the-top supernatural. Seeing such a miraculous sign should’ve at least caused the crowd to consider Jesus’ claims on the following day, but most scoffed at His claims and walked away. The lack of discernment among this hungry throng from so long ago bears a striking resemblance to many Christians today. They see the multitude of signs telling them that they live in the last moments of time before the start of the Tribulation, yet they respond in the same manner as those who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand. They scoff at our hope of Jesus’ imminent appearing and flock to churches that proclaim an end-of-the-world return of Jesus that happens in the far distant future. They want what Jesus offers but would rather not look for His imminent intervention in their world. Beginning in the early seventeenth century, many students of Bible prophecy taught that Israel would again become a nation. When this miraculously happened about three hundred years later, it did little to change the minds of those who claimed God had rejected Israel. This major fulfillment of Bible prophecy didn’t alter their errant thinking that the church was God’s kingdom in place of Israel. In His mercy, the Lord is letting today’s world see multiple precursors pointing to the soon release of the horses of the apocalypse in Revelation 6:1-8. I believe that if it were not for His restraining force, the world would already have experienced the full impact of these judgments. Sometimes I’m amazed that we are still here and these horses remain in their stalls. We are so close, but for God’s mercy. Never before has there been so much evidence pointing to the nearness of this time of wrath than today. However, never in recent history has there been so much unawareness and disbelief regarding Bible prophecy as we now see in churches. The same unbelief that caused the crowd to refute Jesus’ claims in John chapter 6 keeps many of today’s Christians oblivious to the fact that their world could radically and suddenly change at any moment. It grieves my heart that despite professing to believe in the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture, so many pastors remain sound asleep, mired in unbelief concerning what the Lord revealed in His Word regarding His appearing and the time of His wrath upon this wicked world. Of course, Jesus attracted many true followers during His time on the earth. Many saw the signs He performed confirming His identity and recognized Him as their Messiah. Notice the response of those in Jerusalem a little while after the feeding of the five thousand: “Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, ‘When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?’” (John 7:31). We might ask a similar question to those who tell us we are foolish to look for Jesus’ appearing anytime soon, or even in our lifetime: ‘If the Lord were to warn today’s Christians that the Tribulation period was near, would we see any more signs of its soon arrival than we currently witness?’ I can’t imagine we could see more evidence of the approaching Day of the Lord than what we now witness. I’m aware that those who reading are likely eagerly awaiting His return, but I write to provide reassurance of the validity of what we see despite living in the midst of naysayers. Just like those living in the first century AD, we live in biblical times today. Also similar to that day long ago, it’s primarily church leaders who are leading people away from anticipating the Lord’s imminent appearing. Is “The Big One” Coming? That is why I was so alarmed when the Los Angeles Times reported that “two sets of earthquake swarms” had just hit the state. After seeing that story, I went over to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center to check how many earthquakes have shaken the region during the past week. As I write this article, the total number of earthquakes in California and Nevada in the last 7 days is sitting at a grand total of 1010. To me, whenever that number goes above 1000 we are officially in the danger zone. Hopefully there will not be a very large earthquake in California any time soon, but when there is this much shaking going on we should all be on alert. The biggest quake that has hit the region this week is one that shook Imperial County very early on Monday… A magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook California’s Imperial County near the Salton Sea Monday morning. The quake struck 18 miles south of Salton City and 4 miles southeast of Ocotillo Wells at 5:17 a.m., according the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents as far away as Chula Vista, Mission Viejo, Highland and Indio reported feeling the quake, the USGS reported. Prior to that quake, there were two “earthquake swarms” that deeply alarmed scientists. One of those “earthquake swarms” happened over the weekend and it was centered along the California-Mexico border… Another earthquake swarm has been rumbling along the California-Mexico border. More than two dozen quakes greater than magnitude 2.5 have occurred since just after midnight Saturday, with epicenters about 175 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and 100 miles northeast of San Diego, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. They have occurred largely along farmland between the towns of Brawley and Imperial in Imperial County. The largest quake was a magnitude 3.9 that struck at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, bringing light shaking to the Imperial Valley as well as south of the border and rattling Mexicali. Prior to that, a different earthquake swarm rattled an area “about 18 miles southeast of Mexicali in Baja California”… A separate swarm of earthquakes occurred a week ago, about 40 miles southeast of the most recent quake activity. Last week’s swarm occurred about 18 miles southeast of Mexicali in Baja California, with the largest a magnitude 4.2 that was felt as far away as El Centro in California and Yuma, Ariz. Hopefully all of this recent shaking will turn out to be nothing. But it is just a matter of time before “the Big One” comes along. And when it finally arrives, authorities are projecting that it could cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage… If the Big One did strike, ‘it would be a matter of a few tens of seconds before the shaking from a San Andreas event that ruptures the segments closest to Los Angeles reach our urban areas,’ Jonathan Stewart with the University of California, Los Angeles told DailyMail.com. According to the California Earthquake Authority, the natural disaster would cause destruction in a 100-mile radius of the fault line, which starts near Eureka and ends below Palm Springs, killing at least 1,800 people, crumble millions of homes and cause more than $290 billion in damages. An earthquake of the size that they are talking about could literally take place at any time. But I am expecting an even larger catastrophe to hit the state eventually. Personally, I am among those that are anticipating that someday an apocalyptic earthquake will literally alter the geography of the California coastline on a permanent basis. Speaking of apocalyptic threats, on the other side of the world it appears that an absolutely massive super volcano could be waking up. On Monday, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei super volcano in Italy. This was the largest earthquake to hit that region in 40 years… A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Italy’s Campi Flegrei super volcano Monday evening, causing mild damage in the town of Pozzuoli, the epicenter, and as far away as the city of Naples, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) away, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). Cracks in walls and falling cornices were reported, Italy’s Fire Brigade spokesman confirmed to CNN. The 4.4 earthquake at a depth of 3 kilometers is the strongest earthquake to hit the highly seismic area in the past 40 years, according to INGV data. The quake is part of an ongoing “seismic storm” that has seen more than a dozen events over 2.0 magnitude in the past 48 hours. Unfortunately, this wasn’t just an isolated incident. According to one expert, the ground in that particular area has been steadily rising at a rate of 2 centimeters per month… Seismic activity on Campi Flegrei, which is home to at least 360,000 people across seven of the most at-risk inhabited hubs, has intensified in the past two years, with the frequency and strength of the quakes increasing as the caldera, the basin at the top of the volcano, weakens and pressure beneath it builds. This causes the ground to rise and the volcano’s crust to stretch. “The earth is continuing to rise at a rate of 2cm a month, a higher rate than last year, and unfortunately it seems to be continuing at this rate,” Mauro Di Vito, the director of the Vesuvius Observatory for Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), told reporters. “We expect similar earthquakes … I cannot make predictions but we can expect the swarm to continue.” Hopefully an eruption is not imminent because almost half a million people live nearby… The Campi Flegrei, or Phlegraean Fields, is a vast volcanic area covering 150 square kilometers. Despite its last eruption in 1538, its lively magmatic activity classifies it as a supervolcano, posing a threat to nearly half a million residents. While the community has grown accustomed to frequent but minor seismic activity, the intensity of Monday night’s tremors brought a renewed sense of fear. The region experienced 450 smaller earthquakes in the past month, but the magnitude and persistence of this event were unprecedented. All over the world, seismic activity is rising to very alarming levels. But most people won’t care until a major disaster affects them personally. Unfortunately, I am entirely convinced that we are entering a time when major natural disasters of absolutely epic proportions will just keep hitting our planet one after another. Their ministry is to call the people to repentance before it is too late. Throughout history, even in its darkest moments, God raises up prophets and preachers to bring His Word and the promise of salvation to anyone who repents and turns to Him for salvation. Although God pours out His wrath upon the world during the seven years of the Great Tribulation, He also shows His grace and mercy by sending out the 144,000 Jewish witnesses to testify about Jesus Christ (Revelation 7:4-8), resulting in a soul harvest that cannot be numbered. The Gospel will still be preached during this horrendous time. God does not withdraw His saving grace to anyone who comes to Him, even when the Antichrist and his minions desire to wipe out all traces of Him from the world. Tyrants and dictators never learn. Mankind will never erase nor diminish the power and presence of Almighty God, no matter what laws are passed, no matter what threats are made, nor any amount of persecution arises. The Bible says that in the end, Jesus wins, and nothing is going to stop that from happening. Aside from the work of the 144,000 witnesses who preach the Gospel worldwide, God also raises up two men (11:3-6) who will have the task of preaching the Gospel to the people in Jerusalem at that time but are also given powers to show the foes of God that He is still on the throne and His will is going to be accomplished according to His word. These two men appear on the scene to proclaim God’s truth and give their lives for Him. The word “witness” in this context is also the same word used to describe a martyr, or someone who gives testimony about their faith at the cost of their lives. Martyrdom is a constant theme in the history of Christianity. It started with the crucifixion of our LORD upon the cross, continued on with the lives and deaths of His disciples, and continues today. All we need to do is look at the savage treatment of Christians by terrorist groups such as ISIS and how the world essentially turned its back on this atrocity. Hatred of Jesus has not diminished, and as the days draw nearer to His return, hostility toward those who follow Him will get worse, even here in the USA. Our current government is no friend of the church nor of Israel. Laws are written and passed that declare the preaching of the Gospel to be “hate speech” because it dares to point out the fact that people are not “good,” that they cannot redeem themselves, and that the Bible gives the absolute truth about the state of affairs in which the world finds itself (Isaiah 53:4-6, 64:6; Romans 1:18-32, 3:10-18). The idea that there is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:12) gnaws at the relativistic mindset of people who believe that all roads lead to heaven. This blind hatred of Jesus and everything He stands for will intensify during the period of the Tribulation. These two witnesses remind those who inhabit the earth that they are not the center of all being and that God has the final word. The witnesses are called “lampstands” because they bring the light of God’s word to the people (Psalm 119:105). Even in the darkest times of history, God has raised up men and women who have fearlessly proclaimed the Word and the promise of salvation in Christ. Look at the closing years of the Medieval period (300-1500 AD), when the “church” of Rome was at its lowest level of corruption and under the iron hand of popes and priests who kept the people from reading the Bible in their own language under penalty of death. God allowed an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther (1483-1546) to read Romans 1:17 on how the just shall live by faith, and that all the works in the world cannot and will not redeem us. His writings and teachings gave birth to what is known as the Protestant Reformation. Down the corridor of history came men such as John Calvin, John Knox, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Charles Spurgeon, Charles Finney, Billy Sunday, Martin Lloyd-Jones, and Billy Graham to preach the Word of God and call people to repent and place their faith in Christ for salvation. God always has His chosen vessels ready to rescue people from the darkness of eternal doom and instead to walk in the light of Christ (1 John 1:7). The preaching and prophetic declarations of these two witnesses will be met with disdain and hatred from the world. As a result, attempts will be made on their lives, but they are under Divine protection for three and a half years. Everyone who attempts to kill them will be killed themselves through the power given to them by God (v. 5). As Eljah had the power to shut up the heavens as a sign to wicked Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 17:1), so these men will have the same power to shut up the skies for three and a half years as well. They are also given the power to turn water into blood and strike the earth with plagues, as Moses did to the people of Egypt (Exodus, Chapters 7-11). Many prophecy experts have claimed that these two men are Moses and Elijah, who represent the Law and the Prophets and who were the forerunners to the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration to testify to the fact that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law, prophecies, and the work of redemption that God had put into place even before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Other Bible teachers will say that the two witnesses are Elijah and Enoch (Genesis 5:21-24; Jude 1:14-15). Neither man died a natural death but was escorted directly into heaven. These two come back to earth to serve the LORD and be killed as martyrs. They are resurrected and “raptured” back to heaven as the world looks on with surprise and disbelief. It really does not matter who they are. The important thing to remember is that they boldly proclaim the truth of God’s Word and that He has all power and sovereignty in the affairs of humanity and creation. Again, their preaching angers and enrages the world. True Bible preaching has that effect. It has the power to soften hearts but also harden hearts against God. The people are so enraged that when the Antichrist does kill them after three and a half years, a global celebration takes place as their bodies lie in the streets of Jerusalem. The depths of wickedness are seen as gifts are exchanged between the masses as a way of rejoicing over the fact that these two preachers are dead and rotting and will be heard from no more, or so they think (vv.7-10). God has the final word, as after three days, the two witnesses are resurrected, stand on their feet, and are called up to heaven in sight of everyone (vv.11-14). In that same hour, the Bible says that a great earthquake happens, with a tenth of Jerusalem crumbling to the ground and seven thousand people killed. For a brief time, the eyes of many will be opened to the reality and wrath of God, and those who survive end up giving glory to Him. Whether their praise to God is temporary or permanent, the fact is that He has not left the people without testimony and the Word. Not one is without excuse. The time to get right with Him is drawing to a close. You have no promise of tomorrow. Today is the day of salvation. If you choose to ignore the free offer of salvation in Jesus Christ, you will most likely end up in the coming time of Tribulation, the rise of the Antichrist, and the certainty of eternal death in hell, especially if you take the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 14:9-11). While arguably not as prominent as it was in the past, the Masons represent a unique group whose cultish tendencies become obvious the more their secret rituals are revealed. Yet many people—including Christian men—are drawn into Freemasonry because of its public perception of fraternity and benevolence. While the origins of Freemasonry are cloaked in mystery, it is widely recognized that the movement began its rapid ascension throughout western societies early in the 18th Century. Some have even pointed to the founding of the first grand lodge in a London alehouse in 1717 as the beginning of this fraternal order steeped in deism and ritual. An anonymous book published in 1730 entitled, The Defence of Masonry (sic), asserted that Freemasonry descended from the mystery cults of ancient Greece and Rome, but borrowed heavily from the pre-Christian symbolism of Judaism. Blending all of these religious ideologies into what was presented as a homogenized faith system, Freemasonry sought to cut through the class and denominational boundaries that tended to separate rather than unify. The central tenets of Masonry revolve around the wholesome ideals of brotherly love, relief, and truth. Channeling gnostic tendencies, apprentices are invited to pursue secret “higher knowledge” as they progress along “craft degrees” and progressively higher orders attainable only by Master Masons—such as York Rite, Mark Rite, Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, and Shriners. Lending credibility to the benevolence of the various rites, Masons are known for their charitable hospitals and works. One key component of Masonic teaching is a reverence for mathematical and geometric order. Many of their symbols harken to architectural implements and symbolism, even to the point of referring to God as “the Great Architect.” While this extrabiblical title would not be offensive with regard to God’s position as Creator and Sustainer, Masonry’s creation of a hierarchal society devoid of Jesus Christ—and bereft of His Gospel—relegates this man-affirming organization to yet another cult. Do Not Be Deceived Let me be clear: I know many Christians have dabbled in Masonry—just as others have dabbled in other pursuits that were not conducive to the faith once for all handed down to the saints. Additionally, some have considered their Masonic affiliation to be little more than a harmless brotherhood, like the Moose or Elk clubs that were once popular in parts of America. They are often unaware that at its core, “Freemasonry is undoubtedly a religion”—a point made by the authoritative book, Coil’s Masonic Encyclopedia. As Dr. David Reagan cited in the May/June 2007 Lamplighter article, the Kentucky Masonic handbook espouses outright syncretism: Masonry makes no profession of Christianity… but looks forward to the time when the labor of our ancient brethren shall be symbolized by the erection of a spiritual temple… in which there shall be but one altar and one worship; one common altar of Masonry on which the Veda [Hinduism], Shastras [Buddhism], Sade [Astrology], Zend-Avesta [Zoroastrianism], Koran [Islam], and the Holy Bible shall lie untouched by sacrilegious hands, and at whose shine the Hindoo (sic), the Persian, the Assyrian, the Chaldean, the Egyptian, the Chinese, the Mohammedan, the Jew, and the Christian may kneel and with one united voice celebrate the praises of the Supreme Architect of the Universe.” Syncretism—the homogenization or amalgamation of different religions and cultures into a single blended religion. That innate desire to belong—and to cut through the contentiousness and competition of the world—springs from deep in the heart of man. Men are particularly susceptible to this pull and long to be fraternally connected to other manly men—whether it be the “He-Man Woman-Haters Club” of the Little Rascals or the drinking clubs that fill fraternity rows on college campuses today. Appealing to a sense of deep meaning, the thought of connecting to an organization that supposedly traces its origins to the building of Solomon’s temple is very attractive. Who wouldn’t want to be lumped in with the wisest man who ever lived? But another Man who descended from Solomon said, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Only those who recognize that their desperate need for salvation can only be met by a Savior—and not by righteous works or worldly affiliations—will find true balm for their souls. The True Gospel is Not Hidden 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 KJV – “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not a secret. It is the Good News that Christ has come, accepting the punishment of death on behalf of every sinner who places their trust in Him. As the only pure and worthy sacrifice, His death covers over our sins and justifies us before God—allowing us to be in an eternal, life-giving relationship with the Almighty. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead not only proves that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father, it demonstrates His power over death and authority to guarantee us eternal life. In his book, Introduction to Freemasonry, famous Mason Carl Claudy wrote, “In his private petitions a man may petition God or Jehovah, Allah or Buddha, Mohammad or Jesus; he may call upon the God of Israel or the Great First Cause. In the Masonic Lodge he hears petition to the Great Architect of the Universe, finding his own deity under that name. A hundred paths may wind upward around a mountain; at the top they meet.” Not true. Jesus testified, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). One narrow path leads to everlasting life; all others present a broad path that leads to everlasting destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). In God’s kingdom, there are not multiple orders or heightened degrees. There are only sinners saved by grace who are awaiting their homegoing. So, while we can enjoy the fellowship of other believers in the Church Jesus established, all our praise and adoration is directed to Him. There are people who are charged with breaking the laws that do not even apply to their actions as in the January 6 defendants—many who are rotting in Washington, DC jails without justice. The biggest media show trials are those involving former president Donald Trump, where the deeper the trials go, the more testimonies of evidence tampering and shenanigans are made. Show me the man, I’ll show you the crime, right? Trump has been subjected to the most ridiculous legal maneuvering in American history. Imagine, just imagine, taking the here-say testimony of a porn star as a credible witness. The testimony appeared to be nothing more than character assassination. Technically, they are saying Trump falsified business records to pay her to keep silent. The alleged affair reportedly happened in 2006, some 18 years ago. Then there is the multimillion-dollar fine Trump has to pay while he appeals a judge’s decision punishing Trump for inflating the value of his companies to get a loan—a loan that was paid off early and there were no injured parties. The racketeering charges in Georgia also applies laws that have no relationship to election politics. It’s changing the meaning of words and intent. Then there is the whole classified documents show trial. The FBI and the government has handled these records seized from Trump’s home for over 22 months, nearly two years. Now, they are admitting to the court that certain documents were not in the order that was originally reported to the court. In fact, certain file titles were added to the documents. While the prosecution and the media try to downplay that there is nothing to see here, the fact remains that the so-called evidence was tampered with and that, alone, should be enough to put an end to this circus. Indeed, there are investigative reporters saying that the FBI could have added files to the boxes that would frame Trump. This is so much like communism in China, Cuba or Soviet Russia. Can’t people see through this? Can’t the opposition party take action? This is so obvious. It’s likely the biggest election interference scam in American history. If this had happened during the early years of our Republic, people would have been tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail, or worse. Now, it’s just yawns and entertainment. The justice system is being used to undermine the election process, frustrate the Constitution, oppress dissent, and establish authoritarian one-party rule. James 4:17 says, “Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” The depth of the sin here is that if nothing is done to oppose this twisting of the law and justice, it will soon affect everyone on a very personal basis. Often, when we’re going through a hardship, we have plans A, B, C, D, and E. And after we’ve gone through those, we find ourselves saying, “If God doesn’t come through, it’s over.” It may seem horrible, but it’s actually an opportunity for God to show His glory. When the disciples found themselves in the middle of an intense storm, Jesus came to them when the time was right. Matthew 14:25 tells us, “About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water” (NLT). That means the disciples had been struggling against this radical storm for about nine hours. God is never late, but sometimes it may seem as though He is. Maybe Jesus arrived when He did because He was waiting for them to completely exhaust their resources. It may have seemed like the last moment, but the time was just right. And what’s interesting is the Bible says that He walked on the sea toward them. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus walked like everyone else. He faced exhaustion, hunger, and all the rest. But on this occasion, Jesus walked on the water. Perhaps this was to show His disciples that the very thing they feared was only a staircase for Him to come to them. The disciples, however, were terrified when they saw Jesus. They thought He was a ghost. So, why did they not know it was Him? They weren’t looking for Him. If they had been walking by faith and waiting by faith, they would have recognized Jesus immediately. Instead, they jumped to a false conclusion. All too often we’re not looking for the Lord in our times of crisis. The Lord is there speaking to us. He is there wanting to lead us. But we don’t hear Him. We don’t see Him because we’re not looking for Him. In our world today, we have so much chaos, instability, and conflict. And what did Jesus say? “So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!” (Luke 21:28 NLT). Look for Him. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 9:28, “He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him” (NLT). Are you looking for Him? If you’re in a crisis right now, look for Jesus because He is there. We can only know so much and experience so much in our lives at a given moment. Job said, “I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes” (Job 42:5 NLT). In other words, “I heard how You deliver people, Lord, but now I know.” And that is the thing that often will happen in the midst of a storm. The Lord will come to us in a way that we have never known Him before.
