The Angel of the Lord – Randy Nettles - https://www.rev310.net/post/the-angel-of-the-lord
Christ is given many names and/or titles throughout the Old Testament. They include Jehovah, the Lord Jehovah, Jehovah’s Shepherd, Jehovah of Hosts, The Messenger of the Covenant, Son of God, Adonai, Messiah (Anointed One), Branch, Immanuel, Holy One, King of Glory, Man of Sorrows, Sure Foundation, Chief Cornerstone, A Great Light, Prince of Princes, Root of Jesse, Star out of Jacob, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, the Angel of God, the Angel of His Presence, and the Angel of the Lord. There are many more names for Christ in the New Testament as well (including Jesus). “The word Jehovah is based on the Hebrew term for the God of the Hebrews, Yahweh. It is usually rendered in English Bibles as Lord. Many conservative theologians recognize that the name Jehovah or Lord typically applies to the Triune God collectively. But it also, in many cases, refers to the individual Persons of the Trinity, including Christ.” Christ is the second Person of the Trinity and is God; as are the other two Persons of the Trinity, the Father and the Holy Spirit. {1} In the Old Testament, it was sometimes necessary for God to manifest Himself to human beings in a visible form, either individually or collectively. This is called a theophany. The word theophany comes from the Greek words “theos” (God) and “phaneia” (to appear). God usually makes his presence known to man in the form of a man Himself, or sometimes even as an angel. “Old Testament theophanies involving Christ are called Christophanies. So a Christophany is a particular kind of theophany that includes a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ in human form. It does not include visions (or dreams) of God or metaphors involving God, but actual temporary appearances of God in the form of a human being. In the Old Testament, Christ appeared in His pre-incarnate state. But in the New Testament, God appears not as a temporary human being but as one who is entirely permanent in the God-man, Jesus Christ.” {2} The Shekinah (glory) is another form of manifestation or appearance of God. Some scholars (including John F. Walvoord) believe the Shekinah is not a formal theophany but some other kind of manifestation of God. Other conservative theologians believe the Shekinah is a theophany that involves the 3rd Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. These theophanies do not take the form of a man or angel, but rather an object of nature such as a thick cloud, pillar of smoke and fire, thick darkness, or a blinding light. An example of this type of theophany or manifestation is found in Genesis 15:17 when God made a covenant with Abram regarding the promised land. Abram was instructed to offer a sacrifice and to cut up and divide the pieces. “And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces” (Genesis 15:17). The New Testament describes two instances where the Holy Spirit takes a visible form. They are described as having a form” like a dove” (John 1:32) and “cloven tongues like as of fire” (Acts 2:3). God (Elohim) created man in His (Their) image. Elohim is plural for God (Gods) in the Hebrew language. “On the 6th day of creation God made man: And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” (Genesis 1:26). This verse is just one of many declaring the Trinity of God otherwise known as Elohim. The first theophany in the Bible occurred sometime after Adam and Eve ate from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “And they heard the voice (word) of the Lord God walking in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden” (Genesis 3:8). I’m sure all three Persons were involved in the first theophany, but it was the Angel of the Lord who appeared unto man in the form of a man Himself. He came to pronounce judgment on Adam and Eve’s sin. He also prophesied about the coming Savior of mankind and His plan of redemption (Genesis 3:15). Most of the Christophanies in the Old Testament are accomplished by the entity called “the Angel of the Lord.” The word Angel is translated as messenger and Lord is translated as Jehovah in the Hebrew language. So the Angel of the Lord is not actually a created angel but is the Messenger of God. As Christ is the second Person of the Triune God in the New Testament, the Angel of the Lord is the second Person of the Trinity in the Old Testament. The Angel of the Lord is the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ, “whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). They are One and the same, for they both had the same mission to accomplish for God the Father. The Father sent them to the earth at different times to deal with mankind and to accomplish His eternal will and plan of salvation for them. “The combined testimony of these theophany passages (regarding the 2nd Person of the Trinity) portrays the Son of God as exceedingly active in the Old Testament, dealing with sin, providing for those in need, guiding in the path of the will of God, protecting His people from their enemies and, in general, executing the providence of God. The revelation of the person of the Son of God thus afforded is in complete harmony with the New Testament revelation. The testimony of Scripture has been so complete on this point that, in general, scholars who accept the inspiration and infallibility of Scripture are agreed that the Angel of Jehovah is the Christ of the Old Testament. Not only Christian theologians but Jewish scholars as well have come to the conclusion that the Angel of Jehovah is more than an angel.” {3} The first appearance of the Angel of the Lord is found in Genesis 16:7-11 when Hagar (Sarai’s maid) fled into the wilderness. After Hagar had conceived (with Abram’s seed) she grew bitter toward Sarai, so Sarai in turn treated her harshly. Hagar then fled into the wilderness. “And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where did you come from and where are you going? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress, Sarai. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands. And the angel of the Lord said unto her: I will multiply your seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for it is such a multitude. And the angel of the Lord said unto her, Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael; because the Lord has heard your affliction.” After the Angel of the Lord talked to Hagar, this is her reply as recorded by the prophet Moses: “Then she called the name of the Lord (Angel of the Lord) who spoke to her, ‘You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, Have I also here seen Him who sees me?'” (Genesis 16:13). Clearly Hagar recognized this person to be God (in human form). “And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ismael to Abram” (Genesis 16:15-16). In Genesis 18, Abraham and Sarah were visited by three men. “And the Lord (Jehovah) appeared unto him (Abraham) in the plains of Mamre (Hebron): and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; and he lift up his eyes and looked, and then three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground” (Genesis 18:1-2). Abraham invited his guests to stay with them while they prepared a meal for them. The men accepted his invitation and ate a meal with Abraham. Afterward, they asked him where Sarah, his wife, was. Abraham told them that she was in the tent. “And he (one of the men) said, I will certainly return unto you according to the time of life; and surely Sarah your wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him” (Genesis 18:10). Sarah laughed to herself when she heard this news as she was getting very old. The man that gave Abraham the news is now called the Lord in verse 13. He is the Angel (Messenger) of the Lord (Jehovah) appearing as a man to give His message to the couple. “And the Lord said unto Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?’ Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son” (Genesis 18:13-14). The Lord then informed Abraham of the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. “And the Lord said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin very grievous, I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord. And Abraham drew near, and said, Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?” (Genesis 18:20-23). He then proceeded to bargain with the Lord for any righteous people that might live in the doomed cities. Genesis 19 records the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Verse 1 confirms the fact that the two men that were with the Lord and Abraham earlier were indeed angels disguised as men. “And there came two angels to Sodom at evening time, and Lot (Abraham’s nephew) sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and stay all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your ways” (Genesis 19:1-2). Evidently, at this time, Lot did not realize the men were really angels. Genesis 19:4-19 describe the wickedness of the men of Sodom as they attempted to break into Lot’s home and rape the newcomers. “And they (the two men/angels) smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door” (Genesis 19:11). This act confirmed to Lot that they were not ordinary men but were angels. The messengers gave Lot the message from the Lord regarding the coming destruction of the city. They told Lot to gather his family and get out of the city immediately. Early the next morning, judgment came for the inhabitants of the cities of the plain. “The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven” (Genesis 19:23-24). Some scholars believe verse 24 is an example of the Trinity (Elohim). The first Lord mentioned is the second Person of the Trinity – The Angel of the Lord and the second Lord (Lord of heaven) is the first Person of the Trinity – The Father. The third Person, the Holy Spirit, isn’t mentioned here, but He is probably involved in some capacity. Just as God said, Sarah gave birth to a son in her old age. When Isaac was still a child, Sarah caught Ishmael mocking her son and then demanded Abraham cast out Hagar and Ishmael. Abraham did as the boss (Sarah) told him and gave them a small amount of food and water and sent them into the wilderness. After their supplies ran out and they were dying, Hagar lifted up her voice and wept. “And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, ‘What ails you, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is’” (Genesis 21:17). The Angel of the Lord doesn’t appear in person, but rather speaks to Hagar out of heaven. In verse 18, the Angel of the Lord tells Hagar that her son will live and He will bless him by making unto him a great nation. “Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in your hand; for I (the Angel of the Lord) will make him a great nation” (Genesis 21:18). The next mention of the Angel of the Lord is found in Genesis 22. God decided to test Abraham’s faith and told him to take his only son, Isaac, and offer him as a burnt sacrifice to the Lord. Abraham took him to Mount Moriah (next to Salem) “And Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, ‘Here am I.’ And he (Angel of the Lord) said, Do not lay your hand upon the lad, neither do any thing unto him: for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me‘” (Genesis 22:9-12). Abraham looked around and saw a ram caught in a thicket by his horns, so he took it and offered it up for a burnt offering in place of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh which means In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen. “And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, and said, By myself have I sworn, says the Lord, for because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son: that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice‘” (Genesis 22:15-18). The author of Hebrews mentions the faith of Abraham regarding this event. “By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son. Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall your seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from when also he received him figuratively speaking” (Hebrews 11:17). This event foreshadowed the death of Christ in many ways and is called typology. This term has been defined as “a method of biblical interpretation by which a person, event, or institution (type) in the Old Testament corresponds to another one (antitype) in the New Testament within the framework of salvation history.” In this case, Abraham represents God the Father who is giving up his only begotten son (with Sarah); Isaac represents the Son of God who carries the wood (for the burnt sacrifice) on his shoulders (symbolic of the cross) and is willing to die for his father. Both Isaac’s and Jesus’ birth were genuinely miraculous, albeit in different ways. Not only has Israel had to deal with Nasrallah’s fiery rhetoric, but intentional incidents have also been taking place along the Lebanon/Israel border. An attempt by Hezbollah to damage the security fence last Friday resulted in the wounding of several members of the terrorist organization when Israeli security employed non-lethal means to repel them. These incidents will continue to escalate until one side or the other goes all in. Prime Minister Netanyahu should be the one to make a preemptive first strike. Otherwise, Israel will be put in reactive mode having to clean up the damage and loss of life that Hezbollah will cause. Health Scare for Netanyahu The Israeli press went crazy on Saturday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was admitted to Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv. Many members of the media were very disappointed when he was subsequently released the next day having been only diagnosed with dehydration. Sorry, all you protesters and naysayers, 73-year-old Bibi was given a clean bill of health by the medical team, so you’re going to have to put up with him and his judicial reform for a while longer. Israeli President Meets with US President On Tuesday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog joined US President Joe Biden for a meeting in the White House. Biden emphasized America’s commitment to Israel, while reiterating the concerns his administration has over Prime Minister Netanyahu’s judicial reforms. The two also discussed the US president’s commitment to a two-state solution and his disagreement with the expansion of Israeli settlement in the West Bank. For his part, President Herzog thanked Biden for being “a huge friend” of Israel. The day before this visit, Biden and Netanyahu had a phone conversation in which many of the same topics were discussed. That call included an invitation for an official visit by the prime minister to Washington later this year. Israeli Missiles Strike in Syria Early Wednesday morning, a barrage of Israeli missiles hit Iranian-backed militia targets near Damascus, Syria. Two of Iran’s proxy soldiers were reportedly killed, as was one Syrian soldier. The targeted building sustained damage. US and Iran Build Up for Conflict in Syria Both the US and Iran appear to be preparing for conflict in Syria. A large number of US troops are being sent to Syria and the Persian Gulf. To counter, Iran is deploying an extensive array of Quds Forces, Syrian army, and the Shia Afghanistan “Fatemion” brigade. The intended point of conflict appears to be the Tehran-Beirut “corridor”. Meanwhile, the US is also sending a warship and more fighter jets to the area around the Strait of Hormuz. Russia and Iran Feuding Tehran was none too happy when a joint statement was released last week by Moscow and the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council encouraging negotiations to resolve the dispute over three islands in the Strait of Hormuz – Abu Musa, the Greater Tunb, and the Lesser Tunb. Iran considers these islands to be an eternal possession of their country, and they resent the interference by Putin’s government. Never one to miss an opportunity for pettiness, Iran announced on Tuesday that they do not recognize the annexation of any Ukrainian territories by Russia, and they feel that the conflict needs to end immediately. Maybe if Iran stopped supplying attack drones to their erstwhile Russian friends this conflict would have a better chance of ending sooner rather than later. Suicide Boat Blows Crimea Bridge A bridge connecting Crimea to the Russian mainland that was spectacularly damaged in a video that went viral last October was once again attacked early Monday morning. The 12-mile-long Kerch Bridge was damaged when Ukrainian naval drones exploded underneath the span. Two people were killed, and their daughter was wounded in the strike. Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed retaliation for the “terrorist attack”. Prophecy Update Videos Must Watch Videos! Videos You Can Trust

The Watchful, the Wise, and the Worthy - By John Salom - https://www.raptureready.com/2023/07/19/the-watchful-the-wise-and-the-worthy-by-john-salom/ Convergence or Blitzkrieg Prophecy teachers have for some time now grown fond of the term “convergence.” Admittedly, it is an excellent word to describe that phenomenon that students of Bible prophecy have been experiencing in recent years as we have observed the signs of the times begin to manifest simultaneously. Only it seems the word convergence is one that conveys a sense of order, implying the merging or coordination of those things which are converging. It is a tidy descriptor that once perfectly captured what it was that was occurring in our day but somehow fails to fully define that which is now taking place as we are quickly approaching the midnight hour. Today I can write an article about the most current events that carry with them a prophetic significance, and when that article posts just a few days later, it is already old news! The signs of the times are coming at us at a blistering pace in what feels like an overwhelming barrage of mounting evidence under which we are being buried. Blitzkrieg seems a more appropriate aphorism for what today’s watchers are experiencing. Truly, it has become nearly impossible to keep up with it all. Where once we looked up toward the sky and felt those early drops of rain on our face that pointed to a brewing storm, we now stand in a torrential downpour, ankle-deep in rushing water, holding an upturned and torn umbrella. The gentle lapping of prophetic waves onto our bare feet as we strolled passed the shoreline of humanity has become a tsunami of debris and churning muddied waters that are rapidly changing the landscape before our eyes and sweeping away all that we had once known to be normal. The Day of the Lord? To say in this hour that all of the signs given to us in scripture point to the soon return of Jesus is comparable to that of your local weatherman predicting snowfall in the middle of a blizzard. Much like the Thessalonians, people today are beginning to wonder if the Day of the Lord has already come. It hasn’t, of course, but it goes to show just how truly close we are to its arrival. Today’s dutiful watchmen are no longer spotting some indeterminate threat that lies in the shadows somewhere off in the distance; no, today, they are observing as their walled cities are actively being surrounded and their gates approached. They faithfully continue to ring the bells, sounding the alarm to a mostly unsuspecting populace. Within lies a city that is casually going about its daily activities, eating and drinking, buying and selling, marrying and giving in marriage. Nevertheless, there remains a remnant that is keenly aware of just how late the hour has become. It is my firm belief, friends, that we have turned that last corner in our race and have now entered the final stretch toward the prophetic finish line. It lies just in the distance before us, now tangibly within reach, and truly many of us can sense that it won’t be much longer before we are standing face to face with our Master, who has finally returned from that far country to which He has journeyed. Our gathering together to Him could be but the ticking of a second-hand away, which leaves us with the single most important question facing this generation of Christians. What should I be doing with what little time I may have left before I am, in fact, standing before the Son of Man? Where do we go from here? As with anything in this dark world, the Word of God remains that lamp unto our feet and the light we so desperately need along our path. It is only within that Word that we can reasonably expect to answer a question of such gravity with a response that bares with it the genuine weight of truth. Thankfully, the Lord Himself took the time to address this very question when once His closest disciples had approached Him with their own inquiring minds. Following what many have affectionately referred to as the Little Apocalypse or Mathew 24’s Olivet Discourse, Jesus shares plain yet profound wisdom that uniquely applies to this generation more than it has to any other before it. It would behoove us to lend an especially receptive ear to that which He once taught our predecessors. Watch and Pray Matthew, Luke, and Mark each give us this advice in a very similar format. Let us observe closely the lesson being conveyed here. “But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:43-44 NKJV). “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing” (Matthew 24:45-46 NKJV). “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36 NKJV). “Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning—lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:35-37 NKJV). I am reminded of the popular food and travel show No Reservations, which was once a big hit for the Travel Channel. These verses all carry with them a similar motif. Jesus does not have, nor does He need reservations for His return to this earth. The theme playing out here in all of these passages is that of someone dropping in entirely unannounced. Like a homeowner who can’t possibly know when a thief might break in, we are to be vigilant at all times. Too many in the community of those closely watching for the Lord’s return allow themselves to place greater importance on certain times of the year or to label certain seasons “high watch” based upon current events which may or may not fit that which we are presented with in God’s prophetic word. Likewise, many have become disillusioned and even burnt out as they eagerly anticipate the sounding of that trumpet but are instead repeatedly disappointed by what they were sure amounted to a perfect time for the rapture. Friends, the signs are all in place. We know by those signs that the hour is so very close. Let us hold on to the Blessed Hope, which we know is fast approaching without inadvertently allowing ourselves to be taken for a ride on that emotional roller coaster that is ultimately based on sight and not on faith. The scripture does not say watch and pray during the Feast of Trumpets, or watch and pray at Pentecost, or watch and pray during high watch times, or during a blood moon, or during the Feast of New Wine, or at any particular time, for that matter. It says, watch and pray Always. “Let your waist be girded and your lamps burning; and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately” (Luke 12:35-36 NKJV). Surely the Master will come when He is good and ready. It is our job to be prepared to receive Him at any hour, for He is arriving unannounced and without a reservation. Purify and Prepare The Lord then goes on to tell us the story of ten virgins in Mathew 25, five of which had made previous preparations and thus were ready to meet the bridegroom and ready to enter with Him to the wedding. Exodus 19 gives us rich parallels to this preparedness which the scripture calls us to. “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people” (Exodus 19:10-11 NKJV). “So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. And he said to the people, ‘Be ready for the third day'” (Exodus 19:14-15 NKJV). Moses was readying, consecrating, and purifying the Children of Israel for their impending encounter with God. How interesting that similar language concerning our clothes or garments is thrice used when the Lord is addressing the seven churches of Asia in Revelation 2 and 3. Often, we have found encouragement in the words of Paul in 2 Timothy 4:8. “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” How many of us are not anticipating this crown of righteousness as a result of our great desire to see the Lord’s return for us in the sky? We mustn’t forget, though, the words of John as they pertain to His appearing. “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming” (I John 2:28 NKJV). It is difficult to have loved His appearing if we find ourselves ashamed before Him at His coming. This is where preparedness in meeting the bridegroom is a characteristic of the wise. “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure” (I John 3:2-3 NKJV). Friends, this is not a purifying that we can do for ourselves but one that the Holy Spirit alone does for us. John explains this earlier in his epistle. “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:8-9 NKJV). Let us be continually washed with water through the word, saturating our minds and hearts with God’s word (Eph 5:26). Found to be abiding in Him. Taking our sins to the Lord that we may have our feet washed, knowing that the rest of us is completely clean (John 13:10). Let us have clean and washed garments with which to enter the wedding feast with the very moment we hear those words, “Behold the bridegroom cometh, go out to meet Him!” (Matt 25:6). Can you imagine a bridegroom who has been anxiously waiting for and anticipating with great longing and desire for that day when He is finally able to come and be joined to his beloved bride? Imagine Him showing up at her doorstep with overwhelming joy and excitement in his heart only to have her open the front door not wearing her wedding gown but in faded sweatpants and a ratty old t-shirt, her hair a tousled mess and her makeup all smeared with her eyeliner running as though she’d spent all night crying. Imagine her telling him, “Can we do this some other time? Today is really not a good day for this; I’ve just got a lot on my plate right now.” Redeeming the Time Finally, Jesus concludes His words to His inquisitive disciples with a closing parable about the settling of accounts between a Master and His servants (Matt 25:14-30). He here encourages them to trade with that which is His while He travels to a far country. In Luke, He uses the phrase, “Do business till I come.” The Apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in his letter to the Ephesians. “‘Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.’ See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:14-16 NKJV). What are your gifts, dear brother or sister? Ask yourselves the question, what is it that I have been entrusted with while my Master is away? Each of us has a particular place in the body. Don’t try and fill a position for which you are not suited. If you are not occupying the time doing something to advance the Kingdom, then ask the Lord to reveal to you what it is He has uniquely equipped you for, and step out in faith and begin doing it! The time is so very short. Let us each pray for the boldness that the early believers in Acts petitioned the Lord for that we may step out and continue to be salt and light to a dying world right up until that moment that He calls us home. Jesus once asked, “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8). I want my answer to be a resounding YES! I hope and pray that it will be for you as well! May we be found in the good company of the watchful, the wise, and the worthy, busy about our Master’s business upon His imminent return. Maranatha! John Salom [email protected] Don’t Scoff, Be Vigilant - Nathele Graham - [email protected] There are some things in life that make me scoff. Evolution for instance. I have lived many years and never have seen even the slightest change of one kind of animal mutating into a new and different kind altogether. Cats are cats, whether they are calico, tabby, black, big with a mane, or large spotted ones. Dogs are dogs and never change to a new and different species. DNA proves that each kind of animal will always be that same distinct animal. Yes, I scoff at the absurdity of evolution, but never scoff at God’s truth. That doesn’t rule out survival of the fittest or adaptation. If the food supply can only be reached with a longer beak, the genes of birds with longer beaks will survive easier than those with shorter beaks, or else those with shorter beaks will learn to eat food that they are able to gather with their shorter beaks. For instance, a hummingbird has a beak that slips deep into a flower to gather the nectar, while a Cardinal will eat seeds. Today, Christians have stopped being vigilant and have allowed “science” to dictate truth. Only God is truth and His ways are perfect. From Scripture we understand that God created all things in six literal days, but instead of believing God’s truth, Christians have compromised. Will you be scoffed at or mocked, or flunk a class at school, if you stand firmly on God’s word? Yes, you will, but so what? If you take time to study, you’ll find that “science” is filled with made up stories that are taught as truth. “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:20-21. The secular world is blind to the truth. We can’t blame them for their ignorance, but we can guard our own understanding of truth only found in God’s word. Most Christians have become lazy when it comes to studying, and understanding Scripture. It’s interesting that many can quote sports statistics, or know all about the stock market, but haven’t a clue about God’s word. There’s no time for Scripture study when the Dodgers or Cardinals are playing ball. Or there’s a pennant race or the stock market is sinking. None of those things can possibly matter for eternity. It matters not that your favorite team is low in the standings, what’s more important is the faith you profess is being compromised. We need to be vigilant and not allow anything to be above our knowledge and understanding of God’s word. Life on this earth is temporary. “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.” Psalm 90:10. Where are you on that timeline? I’m just past the three score and ten, but I have many friends well past four score. I’ve noticed that the “golden years” are tarnished by sorrow, loss, and the aches and pains of aging. Yet, God never changes. He is the same today as He was in the beginning. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Hebrews 13:8. God hasn’t changed, nor has His word. Christians must use Christ as our example and become like Him, instead of trying to change Him to be like us. “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48. God’s perfection is an impossible standard for humans to achieve, but Christians have Christ. We are sinners saved by grace, and we must be vigilant in our Bible studies so we aren’t swayed by the ways and whims of the world. We mustn’t try to make God conform to human thinking. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9. God’s ways are so much higher than our minds can grasp. I want to be more like Him, but I fail. He doesn’t expect us to stop being human, but He does expect us not to scoff at His word, and to be vigilant in our walk with Him. It’s important to be able to defend our faith, because sometimes we listen to worldly opinions and even need to defend God’s word to our own minds. You may face derogatory remarks and scoffing from people around you, but stand strong in the Lord. How do you live your faith when people mock you and laugh at your beliefs? You need to plant your feet solidly upon Scripture and don’t allow your faith to waiver. “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.” 1 Peter 3:15-16. Every day we are inundated with sin being glorified. Even though the world accepts something it doesn’t mean God accepts it. We are called haters when we stand against sin and don’t participate in pride parades or other blatant demonstrations of sin. When Peter talked about having a “good conversation in Christ”, the King James translation sort of blurs the meaning. The word “anastrophe” is translated “conversation” and means “manner of life, conduct, behaviour, deportment”. We are to live our life in such a way that we please God, and those who accuse us of being “haters” will be ashamed because of our Godly love towards others. If you love someone and see them headed to destruction, you don’t keep quiet. That’s not love. All who have rejected Christ for salvation are on the road to destruction. Paul, and all of the Apostles, faced persecution and scoffers were everywhere, but they were not silenced. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16. We will be silenced if we are ashamed of our faith. Pray that the Holy Spirit will strengthen your faith and help you to speak openly in defense of the Gospel of Christ. Peter said to always be ready to answer questions about your faith. Study Scripture and write it on your heart so you have a ready answer. A good study of Scripture (and I don’t mean one filled with New Age ideas and purpose driven follies) will open your eyes to the truth of prophecy. People will scoff at you because Christians have been looking for the Rapture for years. Even Paul seemed to think it would happen in his time. Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t happen. The Pre-Trib Rapture is a Biblical fact and a gift from God to all believers. The Great tribulation will be a horrific time when God’s wrath will be poured out in judgment of all who have rejected Him. For those of us who follow the news with an eye on prophecy, we can see all of the prophetic pieces falling into place. The nation of Israel is back in their land, and that was a huge part of fulfilled prophecy. Russia is uniting with Iran against Israel, and the whole world condemns Israel for defending themselves. The economic system of the world is merging into a one world currency, and governments are starting to willingly turn over their individual sovereignty to a one world government. Watch out for artificial intelligence; it’s being used for evil. We live in exciting times, but they can be frightening. The Rapture is going to happen soon, and we can take comfort in that. Hatred towards God and His children is becoming more open. As the pieces fall into place, the enemy of all (Satan) plants doubt in the minds of the weak and gullible, so God and Scripture are questioned. Pastors don’t equip Christians with the pure word of God, but water it down and make it politically correct and user friendly. Since many pastors don’t understand Scripture because seminaries quite often don’t teach God’s pure word, scoffers can easily silence Christians. Christ is going to call Christians Home very soon, but scoffers laugh. “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming” for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”2 Peter 3:3-4. Things have changed a lot since the Garden of Eden. God’s perfect creation was damaged by sin. God could have left us to continue to struggle on our own to try and save ourselves from eternal death, but He loves us. He gave us Scripture, the Holy Spirit inspired word of God. The Old Testament is filled with prophecy. Through prophecy we understand that God still loves His creation and that the only way for humans to live eternally with Him is to be perfect. Not perfect in the eyes of other humans but perfect in the eyes of God. That perfection can only be obtained through faith in the shed blood of Christ. When Adam sinned, the entire creation fell and was corrupted beyond salvation. That’s why we need Jesus Christ, God incarnate. This is also one of many reasons to reject the lie of evolution. Scripture tells us that there was no sin or death until Adam disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. That’s when humanity was separated from God. Billions of years of fish turning into higher life forms didn’t happen. God spoke and creation happened. Then sin and death became reality and creation was altered. That didn’t change God’s love. Prophecy disclosed that God would provide a way for us to live with Him eternally. People who lived before the cross found salvation by looking forward to the coming Messiah. He would be born of a virgin in Bethlehem. Jesus fulfilled hundreds of prophecies, but those who are ignorant of prophecy were blinded to His coming. Jesus was God come in the flesh. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:16-18. Some well-meaning Christians would have us believe that faith isn’t enough; they want us to believe that faith plus works is necessary. God tells us that we are saved by faith. We will never be sin-free while we live on this side of Heaven, but true faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ will bring God’s forgiveness of the sin that separates us from Him. Works won’t save you, but after you’ve repented and asked for salvation through Christ, you need to turn away from sin. You will fail in your walk. I do. In spite of our failures, God is always willing to forgive. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. What a wonderful promise. Don’t scoff at God’s word, but be vigilant in your walk with Christ. The Rapture will happen soon. I won’t try to guess at a date when it will happen, but as I study prophecy, I can see the signs that it could be at any moment. I’m ready to go and I hope you are too. Don’t let scoffers intimidate you, but be vigilant in your walk with Christ. Daily Jot: The Farm Chronicles: Class Reunion - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com A lot of people have told me that they never go to their class reunions. Some say they have nothing in common with their former classmates. Others say they haven’t seen them since they graduated, so why would they want to see them now? The Southeast High School Class of 1973 doesn’t feel that way. We were a pretty tight-knit group of 150 people. Truly a class of overachievers. Many were sons and daughters of farmers and factory workers who knew what it was like to have to get up early and do the chores around the house or milk the cows or feed the livestock. We were not the generation that sat in the house weekend mornings playing video games. We worked. We played. We created. Recently, our class held its 50th reunion. About 60 classmates along with their spouses or significant others met at the Deerfield Town Hall in Ohio to celebrate the occasion. Gone were the old clicks and associations, even offenses. The scholars, the jocks, the nerds, the hippies, whatever, joined together for a few hours and enjoyed the type of friendship that living life over half a century brings. We laughed a lot. Told stories on one another. Caught up on family and time. I learned things about me that I never knew. One of my classmates from grade school said that I was special because I had sandwiches, not with bread, but with buns. And she knew that I had a plan because I had a satchel to carry my books. Two other classmates recalled a time when I brought them back from Columbus where I went to college. I had an old ’67 Chevy Super Sport that I bought for $450 with my graduation money. They reminded me that I was a crazy driver as they were bouncing around in the backseat to the point they were nauseous after the three hour trip. Another told me about how I pulled up during a track meet and pushed him across the finish line so he could get his letter in track. Others talked about the times we were showing horses. Still others remembered my dad. We were all part of each other’s lives in some way. We contributed to one another. And even with the passage of time, we can pick up where we left off. A highlight for me was Rose Braunns, wife of my very best friend Sonny (who passed on). She came up from Arkansas to be with us. Jimmy Hostetler, class president, gave her the mic to say a few words. And she spoke with the same kindness and admiration that Sonny would have toward our classmates. Many, who never knew her, came up and told her how much Sonny had meant to them. That’s the kind of people I grew up with and they are true, wonderful Americans. The type of folks that you would love to be with. It’s the America I knew and loved, even today. If you have forgotten friends or folks you haven’t seen for a while, say a little prayer for them, let them know you are thinking of them. You never know your impact! Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.” Life is tough. It’s better with friends. Daily Devotion: What You Can Control - by Greg Laurie – www.harvest.org Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do wrong. —Psalm 141:4 https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/what-you-can-control/ - Listen We can’t control everything about our lives and everything that surrounds us. We can’t control who moves into the house next door or who works near us. But when it comes to our free time, we do have a say as to whom we will spend it with. David asked God to help him in his choice of companions. He prayed, “Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do wrong” (Psalm 141:4 NLT). This parallels what we often call the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6. Among the petitions and statements that Jesus taught us to pray to the Father, we find this statement: “And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one” (verse 13 NLT). In other words, “Lord, help us and deliver us from the power of the devil. Help us not to walk into situations that could be spiritually damaging. And Lord, help us to be selective as to the people we spend time with.” David wanted to guard against hanging out with people who could drag him down spiritually. For instance, while the religious leaders were unjustly trying Jesus on trumped-up charges, Peter was warming himself by the fire outside the high priest’s house. Some of the people there recognized him as one of the followers of Jesus. And as Peter faced the peer pressure of the moment, it caused him to want to withdraw. He didn’t want others to know what he really believed. He was afraid of standing out. So, he denied knowing Jesus, not just once but three times. The same thing can happen to us. Let’s be careful in this area. Even a person who is strong in their faith can be unduly influenced by ungodly people.
