According to Leviticus 23, one of the holiest days of the year, next to Yom Kippur, is Yom Teruah—also referred to as the Feast of Trumpets. It's one of the seven Jewish feasts God commanded the Jews to celebrate each year. Again the LORD [Yahweh] spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. You shall not do any laborious work, but you shall present an offering by fire to the LORD.’” Lev. 23:23-25 So the Feast of Trumpets is a day of blowing trumpets. This feast is also referred to as Rosh Hashanah. In the Hebrew, Rosh means “Head” and Hashanah means “the year.” The Israelis call it this because they believe it was at this time that the Lord began creating the world and all that is in it. So they celebrate this feast as the beginning of the Jewish New Year. But God says to celebrate this feast in the seventh month as the 5th of 7 feasts. So the Jews celebrate the new year twice… once on the first day of the first month of Aviv, and again on the first day of the seventh month of Tishri. 10 Days of Awe The Jews also celebrate Rosh Hashanah as being the beginning of the “10 Days of Awe.” This declaration is quite interesting and tells us that as a whole, they take their Old Testament scriptures literally. Here’s why… Between Yom Teruah and Yom Kippur there are 10 days. They refer to them as “Days of Awe” because Jewish people know the Holiest day of the year— Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement— is now only 10 days away. All Jews know that when the Temple was on Mt. Moriah, once a year on Yom Kippur the blood of a sacrificed bull and goat was brought into the Holy of Holies by the High Priest of Israel. The High Priest was the only one who could go into the Holy of Holies, and he would pour the animals' blood onto the Mercy Seat which contained the two stone tablets with the 10 commandments written by the finger of God. So on Yom Kippur the blood from innocent animals would be shed to cleanse the nation’s transgressions against those 10 commandments. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement. Lev. 17:11 …all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Heb. 9:22b So these 10 Days of Awe were the time for Israel to be aware of the solemn time that was just ahead. It was time to repent of any known sin as the Day of Atonement approached. This was the time for the Jews to humbly admit they were sinners who needed atonement for their sins. God was providing atonement, and humility was what was expected in the Days of Awe: If there is any person who will not humble himself on this same day, he shall be cut off from his people. Lev. 23:29 The Days of Awe were also a reminder of Israel's need for a Savior. When the Savior finally came, the Day of Atonement would no longer be necessary. Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, "In the seventh month on the first of the month you shall have a rest, a reminder by blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation." Lev. 23:24 Therefore the Feast of Trumpets was a reminder that the day was approaching when God would cover all their sin. Having their sins taken away was incredible and only bestowed on those Jews participating in Yom Kippur. They were in awe of that fact. Jewish scribes have long associated the Feast of Trumpets with the arrival of their Messiah. So this "reminder" is both for the Jews to prepare for Yom Kippur AND the future arrival of their Messiah. (Well, OK, they missed Him the first time, and now most will miss Him again at the Rapture! But they will welcome Him at the 2nd Coming. All part of God's plan for the ages. Also, you can see why they want to rebuild their Temple as currently they have no sacrifice. This WILL happen in the Tribulation—Dan. 9:27.) Believers should also associate this feast with the arrival of Jesus. We can easily see the Rapture in Exodus 20 when the Lord came down from the top of Mt. Sinai on the third day. Israelites were at the bottom of the mountain and were greeted with a very loud trumpet sound. So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. Ex. 19:16 The people of Israel had gathered in the desert at the bottom of Mount Sinai to meet God. And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Ex. 19:17 Here we see a fascinating foreshadowing of the Rapture. Paul describes the Rapture this way in his very first letter he ever wrote to the churches he planted. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1Th. 4:16 Just as God descended on Mt. Sinai with the sound of the trumpet, Jesus will also have his angels call us with the heavenly trumpet to meet our Lord Jesus in the air. And just like when the Holy Spirit came to the earth in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit departing at the Rapture will also be quite loud. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, Acts 2:2 The Holy Spirit was loud coming at Pentecost to just a few men. Imagine how loud it will be when He leaves the earth with millions in tow. The entire earth will know something just happened and that this mind-blowing noise was supernatural in origin. So the yearly Jewish celebration of the Feast of Trumpets points to the Rapture…but few Jews understand this…at least they don’t understand today. But a lot of Jews WILL understand after the Rapture because Jesus Himself will train 144,000 Rabbinical Jews to evangelize and teach the truth about Jesus the Messiah, Yeshua HaMashiach.(1) With that background, this next verse makes a lot more sense: The Last Trumpet Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 1Cor. 15:51-52 The word “mystery” in the Greek is "mysterion," and it means "truth undiscoverable except by divine revelation.” This "mystery" parallels the prophetic book of Daniel that deemed what was being recorded would not to be understood until the latter days. “But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time;" Dan. 12:4 Today any grounded Bible Believer understands Daniel 2 and 7 are about events that are occurring today. God is revealing this mystery in the last days in which we live. He [God] has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. Dan.2:28 But even more interesting is that Rosh Hashanah is celebrated by blowing trumpets for two days. There’s that two day period again! And at the end of the two days, technically the third day, the Jews end the Feast of Trumpets celebration with a special blowing of the trumpet seven times. And the 7th blow is one very long and loud blast. So when Paul said the Rapture will happen “at the last trumpet,” he’s referring to the last trumpet blowing at the Feast of Trumpets. I believe God has revealed this truth to us! This year the Feast of Trumpets/Rosh Hashanah begins on September 16 and ends on September 17. We, of course, start and end our day at midnight. But in Israel, the day ends and begins at sunset. So Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday night at sunset, and ends two days/48 hours later at sunset. Sunset in Israel Sunday, September 17, is at 6:42 PM. So here in the United States the time the Israelis will be blowing the long last trump on Sunday morning is: 8:42 AM Pacific Time 9:42 AM Mountain Time 10:42 AM Central Time 11:42 AM Eastern Time If the Rapture happens this year, I personally believe it will have been disclosed in scripture that it will happen at the end of the Feast of Trumpets, which in the USA is this Sunday morning. Obviously I could be wrong. Or the calendar could be wrong. Or I've got the wrong year. Or maybe the mid-trib Rapture position could be right...nah, not a snowball’s chance for that one! Anyway, there are other reasons to think it could be this year. We all can see what looks like “the writing on the wall” going on all over the world. The list is ridiculously long! I'll bet everyone reading this could easily name 10 reasons the Rapture's close off the top of their head. But there are three major reasons to think Rapture won’t happen this year.
But I could be wrong about that warning too. All things considered, no doubt it sure SEEMS like it could be this year. Three terrorists were killed in the missile attack which originated from the Mediterranean. Israel, per usual, declined to comment on the event. Then, that same night, Israel struck again, flying over Lebanon to reach the Shariat Airbase in Homs. The base and other headquarters were damaged. Mossad Thwarts Attacks on Jews Around the World Mossad director David Barnea stated in a speech on Sunday that his agency has thwarted 27 attacks against Israelis and Jews around the world over the past year. Countries where these attacks were planned included Cyprus, Tanzania, India, and others. “We are witnessing a significant increase in attempts to attack Jews and Israelis worldwide, and as we speak, we continue to track Iranian and proxy teams to prevent them from killing Jews and Israelis,” said Barnea. In his speech, he also explained how Israel was able to interdict a deal in which Iran would sell Russia short-range and long-range missiles to be used against Ukraine. Israel Signs Wheat Deal with Muslim Countries On Monday, Israel signed a historic wheat deal with two Muslim countries, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. In exchange for wheat imports, Israel will provide these countries with advanced agricultural technologies. While a great deal for all three nations, the one country that will not be happy about this is Russia. Currently, Israel is a major importer of Russian wheat. This agreement could reduce the volume of imports from the Russians. This is just one more reason for Moscow to be unhappy with Israel. Massive Quake Rocks Morocco On Friday evening, the ground in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco began to shake. Buildings collapsed, landslides were triggered, roads were blocked, and people were killed. So far, the death toll from the earthquake has reached 2,901 with 5,530 injured, making it the deadliest North African earthquake in 63 years. Israel has offered to send search-and-rescue teams, joining the numerous nations who are willing to help in the quake’s aftermath. Cyclone Daniel Devastates Libya The Mediterranean storm, designated Daniel, has left large portions of Libya underwater. Worst hit is the city of Derna which was deluged when two dams collapsed in the mountains above the city. Whole neighborhoods were washed away in a moment. The Libyan Minister of Health expects the death toll to reach 10,000 and the missing to be ten times that number. Meanwhile, flooding continues in areas around the world: Shatoujiao, Shenzhen, China; Hong Kong; Yangchun, Guangdong, China; Gateshead, England; Shanghai, China; Molina de Segura, Murcia province, Spain; Weda Bay, Maluku, Indonesia; along with many other locations. In Armenia/Azerbaijan Conflict, Iran is the One to Blink The slow burn between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed autonomous oblast of Nagorno-Karabakh threatened to burst into flames this past weekend. Both sides raced troops toward their joint border, while calling on their allies to back them up. Iran threatened Azerbaijan saying they better back down. Turkey and Pakistan immediately told Iran that they best stay in their lane. Eventually, Iran backed down under pressure not only from outside the country, but likely also from the 20 million of their citizens of Azeri origin. Russia has also been involved in the past on the Armenian side, but they declined to get involved having enough problems of their own already in Ukraine. After a lot of saber-rattling, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached an agreement which should calm things back down, at least for now. US Pays Iran $6 Billion for Hostages The news media will sugarcoat the deal that the Biden administration has just made with Tehran’s Islamic regime saying that they simply waived sanctions on $6 billion as part of what is really just a prisoner swap. Our guys for their guys – oh, and $6 billion. In reality, everyone recognizes this for what it is. Tehran took US citizens as hostages, and Washington just paid $6 billion ransom to get them back. “Wait,” say the administration’s apologists, “the agreement is that this money will be used for humanitarian purposes.” But no one believes that, not even Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi. “This money belongs to the Iranian people, the Iranian government,” said Raisi, “so the Islamic Republic of Iran will decide what to do with this money.” Could it go toward their uranium stockpile, which the IAEA said is now within one month of having enough enriched uranium for six bombs and four months away from having enough for ten? Or might it go toward the airport that Iran is building in Lebanon – just 20km away from the Israeli border – which they will use to launch terrorist attacks? The ayatollahs are going to be able to check a lot of items off their to-do list with $6 billion. Biden and Modi Announce New Railway and Trade System Connecting Asia with the West A new railway and trade system could better unite India and Asia with the West, according to US President Joe Biden, Indian President Narendra Modi, and others at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India. The route would pass through Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Israel before moving into Europe. This would essentially make Israel a substitute trade way in place of using the congested Suez Canal. North Korea May or May Not have Launched their First Nuclear Sub On Friday, North Korea launched its first fully operational tactical nuclear attack submarine. South Korea immediately attempted to rain on Kim Jong-un’s underwater parade by saying that “fully operational” might be a bit of an exaggeration. The implication is that “somewhat operational” or “at least it doesn’t sink” might be better descriptors. Soon after leaving the unveiling of the sub, the North Korean leader hopped on his personal train and headed northeast to Vladivostok, Russia. Once there, he met Russia President Vladimir Putin at a cosmodrome for talks. The expectation is that Putin will ask Kim for artillery and ammunition, while Kim will want technology in return. His podcast, which I do not endorse with the rank language he often uses, has over 15 million subscribers. He's a major influencer in our culture today and an unbeliever. A couple of weeks ago, he had a guest named Duncan Trussell, who is a stand-up comic, writer, and actor. Surprisingly, they discussed for quite some time how a cashless society is a precursor to enforcing the mark of the beast. During his program, Joe Rogan asks, "How long before we're a cashless society?" Trussell responded: "Hopefully, forever. It is so scary to imagine losing privacy completely because every transaction is in the public eye and is observable... This is where I get scared because it's too similar to the mark of the beast. It's too similar to exactly what the Bible in the book of Revelation says. You won't be able to trade, you won't be able to do anything unless you have the mark, unless you bear the mark." This response led Joe Rogan to say, "How's the Mark of the Beast described in the Bible? I think we're onto something here." Rogan then pulled up the Bible and read from Revelation 13:11-18, a section that describes the coming false prophet, a kind of second in command or the lieutenant of the coming antichrist, who is going to make an image to him. The influential podcast host read this entire section live on his broadcast. This is a well-known unbeliever talking at length about the mark of the beast, reading the book of Revelation, making this connection between a cashless society and the rise of the antichrist. On the heels of that conversation, the new "Amazon One" technology is about to go nationwide. A recent headline from CBS News reads, "Amazon releases new cashless 'pay by palm' technology that requires only a hand wave." This article discusses the use of biometric palm scanning technology, which again, is part of this cashless society that Joe Rogan was talking about: Amazon is taking cashless payments to another level. In a new rollout, the tech giant is giving customers another contactless way to pay for groceries -- with their palms. In a statement Thursday, Amazon announced that the palm recognition service, called Amazon One, will be used for payment, identification, loyalty membership, and entry at over 500 Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh locations across the nation by the end of the year. Instead of pulling out a credit card or even a phone for Apple Pay, subscribing customers will simply have to hover their palms over an Amazon One device to pay. For decades, Bible prophecy teachers have been saying that there is going to be a cashless society. The only way that the antichrist can control the world economy is for there not to be cash. As long as there is, people can use cash to operate in a way that is undetected. The article continues: The technology is already available at 200 locations across 20 U.S. states including Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon and Mississippi... Panera Bread, for example, has adopted the technology so that customers can simply wave their hands above the device in order to pull up their MyPanera loyalty account information and pay for their meals. At Coors Field stadium in Colorado, customers trying to purchase alcoholic beverages can hover their palms over the Amazon One device to verify they are 21 or older. It's being used now in several different convenience stores. It's being used at Hollywood casinos in Detroit. It's also being used by many airport travel retailers. Another article from LifeWire reports, "This means you won't need your wallet, purse, or even your phone to complete transactions. You just need your palm." Basically, this turns your hand into a personal credit card. "How does this work?" the article goes on. "You pre-enroll via your Amazon account, using a credit or debit card. Next, you head over to an Amazon One palm-reading device to make a scan." Now, this is powerful. LifeWire says, "The algorithm matches unique elements of your palm with your account information... It doesn't just use images of the palm to identify a person, but also incorporates the underlying vein structure. " CBS went on to state: A palm is the safest biometric to use because you cannot identify a person by it, Amazon said. The tech company assured customers that their palm data will not be shared with third parties, including "in response to government demands." Including "in response to government demands"? Well, in the future, this is going to be taken over by the antichrist. He's going to rule the world and rule this economy. It's important to understand that these technologies that we're talking about here (Amazon One, different chip technologies, or biometrics) are not the mark of the beast, but they're part of the infrastructure he will use to control the world economy. I think he will use these things alongside the mark of the beast. He will use every kind of technology he can to control, monitor, and surveil people's lives and finances. When you control people's money, you control their life. All of this is part of the continued setup and setting the stage for the global economy and the antichrist. People want to know, what is the mark? In his podcast, while Joe Rogan is trying to understand what the Mark of the Beast is, somebody sends him a note telling him that the word "mark," in the Greek, is the word "charagma." He says it wrongly several times, trying to pronounce the Greek word before talking about the meaning. Nine times in the New Testament, you have the word "charagma" used for this mark, eight of those times in the book of Revelation. The only time it's not in Revelation is in Act 17:29, which says: "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven [or etched] by art and man's device." So, this mark of the Beast is going to be an etching, a tattoo, or a brand; whatever it is, it will be upon the right hand or the forehead of people during the tribulation period. It will be instituted at the midpoint of the seven-year tribulation when the antichrist rules the world politically, economically, and religiously. It says in Revelation chapter 13 that 666 is the number of a man, the number of his name. In both Greek and Hebrew, all the letters of the alphabet have a numerical value associated with them. When the antichrist appears, his name will equal 666. I'm sure you can look today and find all kinds of people whose names equals 666, but that's jumping the gun to do that; he's not going to be revealed until after the rapture. When people take the mark of the beast, they'll literally be taking the name of the antichrist on their right hand or forehead. It will be a pledge of allegiance, a loyalty oath to the antichrist, that they now belong to him, but he owns them. If people don't take the mark, they're going to be shut out of the worldwide economy. It's all here, it's all in place, and all that has to happen is the rapture. One of these days, the curtain of the in times will go up when the rapture takes place, and the antichrist will rise, and the mark is going to engulf the whole world. God didn't tell us these things to scare us. He gave these things to us to prepare us. I hark back to what was said during Joe Rogan's podcast, "It's so scary." Well, it's not to make us anxious but to make us alert and aware. And so for those of us who know the Lord, we see these things, and it foreshadows the fulfillment of prophecy, of the coming cashless society, and the mark of the beast. It's a major signpost towards the soon coming of Jesus Christ. You and I need to make sure that we're ready. Prophecy Line: The CRISIS - By Terry James - https://terryjamesprophecyline.com/blog/ In thinking for some time about writing on this subject, I considered putting together an entire book to explore matters under the title “The CRISIS.” That might still come to fruition at some point, but the breakneck pace of the stage being set for the Tribulation prompted my idea to deal with subjects making up the CRISIS sooner rather than later. America and the world, through growing anti-God activity, are building one layer of evil on top of the next. This is setting the stage for the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Secular economists and observers of the national and geopolitical movement toward fiscal and every other sort of catastrophe predict coming collapse into—well, they aren’t certain exactly what. The experts who believe world economic collapse is on the brink have been predicting it for decades. Some think the globalists are deliberately doing things to collapse America and the world so they can be at the center of rebuilding society and culture in their own image. As witness, consider the term “Great Reset,” which is encapsulated in Agenda 30, the outline of the many changes proposed by the New World Order builders for the year 2030. (That year, interestingly, is seven years from this one.) Bible prophecy watchers, in some cases (including myself), particularly have this view that these minions are trying to bring about world collapse. Some believe it’s the global elite such as Klaus Schwab, George Soros, etc., who will ultimately be able to bring it about. America must go down first, obviously is their thinking, because it is the apex monetary holdup to the rest of the world falling in line with their nefarious plans. It is my long-standing contention that the collapse, which we’ve been told will happen next month or next year, or sooner or later, will never come because of these people within the Ephesians 6:12 cabal having their way. Neither will the demonic minions within that group be able to bring about the global implosion into dystopia. They need a CRISIS in order to crash things and implement the devil’s blueprint. They incessantly try to find ways to bring about that CRISIS, which they perceive is necessary to make Americans compliant with their wicked planning. One of the most obvious attempts to bring about collapse was the pandemic that began in late 2019—the COVID-19 virus. And it was largely successful. The United States suffered significantly from the shutdown of businesses, schools, entertainment, and every other sort of activity, including many churches. This must have been particularly pleasing to the devil. Yet that CRISIS, which they’re trying to gin up again in anticipation of a presidential election that might go against globalist planning, did not bring about the collapse. America, as well as much of the world, came out of the effort weakened but in a recovery mode. It will take a more virulent catastrophe to bring the conditions that will allow them to implement Agenda 30—the plan that is seven years in the future. There has been much talk of stepping up the movement into the Agenda 30 Great Reset effort by the powers that be. On September 19, there are scheduled meetings to catch up on ground lost due to the nations’ recovery from the pandemic and other attempts to bring about collapse. Their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) plan has fallen behind, and the meetings will be designed to get all of the most powerful national governments on board with the globalist efforts of the United Nations, World Economic Forum, World Health Organization, and other would-be masters of the earth. We’ve looked at all this previously. Here, again, is their dilemma, in their own words. The SDG brief documenting their near-panic states: A recently released report by the secretary-general on “progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals” draws on the latest data to sound the alarm for action. Of the roughly 140 targets with data, only about 12% are on track to be achieved by 2030; and some 30% have either seen no movement or progressed below the 2030 baseline. Giving up on the SDG or extending the deadline is not an option. The world has been rocked by a series of interlocked crises…. Recommitting to the 2030 Agenda is the best roadmap out of these crises, but we are fast running out of time. This is a profound development to consider in thinking on the nearness to The Tribulation –Daniel’s seventieth week. I believe this summit is Psalms 2:1-12 playing out before our eyes. It is the world of anti-God governing entities slapping God in the face. I believe this display of rebellion will substantially move forward God’s judgment in answering this wicked agglomeration. The human and demonic minions against which we struggle, according to Paul’s warning in Ephesians, are desperate for their world-rending CRISIS. Their attempts, as mighty as they have been, haven’t been able to bring in their Great Reset so the New World Order can be installed. Again, I contend that they will never be able to bring on such a global CRISIS. The Holy Spirit is in the business of restraining their evil this side of the Rapture, according to 2 Thessalonians chapter 2. God has these evil entities in derision, as predicted in Psalms chapter 2. That world collapse into dystopia is coming, however. It cannot be stopped. But it will be the God of Heaven, not the human and demonic minions, who will produce the CRISIS that will come when Christ calls all believers to Himself (1 Corinthians 15:51-55 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). God’s judgment and wrath against the anti-God rebels of earth will begin to fall that very day, according to the Lord Jesus: “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed” (Luke 17:26-30). The CRISIS could come at, literally, any tick of the second hand on your watch. You don’t want to be left here in unbelief when Jesus calls those of God’s family. Here is how to make sure you will hear and heed that glorious call. “That if thou shalt belief in thine heart the Lord Jesus, and shalt confess with thy mouth that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). Daily Jot: The American Chronicles: Finding Jim Thorpe - Bill Wilson – www.dailyjot.com As we were winding our way through the backwoods in Vermont toward Rutland to visit our niece Megan and her husband Bill, we crossed over the Grand Canyon—the grand canyon of Vermont, that is. Chris, Service Dog Charlie and I got out and braved the speeding local traffic to walk out on the bridge for a view of this breathtaking overlook of the 165-foot Quechee Gorge, cutting through the Ottauquechee River. Then on to Megan and Bill’s. Great visit and a wonderful lunch cooked by Megan while Bill and I watched some college football. We were so excited to be with them we forgot to take the customary family photo before we left. The fam will probably pull our family membership card for that. From Rutland, we continued a ways to the Lake Bomoseen campground for our overnight before heading back home. The 2,400 acre Lake Bomoseen is the largest lake entirely within the boundaries of Vermont. The overnight there was very peaceful—no cell service, no internet…meaning no television. Well, camping isn’t what it used to be! I guess this is really called glamping. Up early the next morning and all ready to go when one of our camping neighbors frantically was waving at me to stay put. Seems I had forgotten to raise up the levelers beneath the van. It’s a wonderful thing—how the campers look out for one another. Levelers up. On our way to the next stop. We try not to travel more than 200 miles a day. There is good reason for that. This leg toward home, however, was about 325 miles to get to the campground at Tamaqua, Pa. It took us almost six hours to get to Tamaqua. The last 40 minutes was winding around through the remote hills and valleys of Pennsylvania’s coal and logging country in the Pocono Mountains. We hadn’t eaten since our early breakfast and we were tired and hungry. All we really wanted was to sit down at a restaurant and have a nice meal. The check-in guy at the campground told me there was a restaurant about two miles away. We got there and it was closed. So Chris found a nice bar-b-q place. Another 7 miles. We got there and it wasn’t quite as advertised. It was a food truck and the rain started coming down. She found yet another restaurant about 8 miles away. That’s when we discovered Jim Thorpe. The Burrough of Jim Thorpe is this really neat town that served as a rail center for coal and lumber. Victorian architecture, a train station, just a gem in the middle of nowhere. Got its name when Jim Thorpe’s widow essentially negotiated the burial of the Olympic athlete there. Old town. Narrow streets, especially for our RV. I couldn’t make the turn up the street to the restaurant, so I had to back around and try to park along the street while holding up traffic. Found a place and began parallel parking. Chris and Charlie were in the back, supposedly guiding me. Then I scraped against a street sign. I think Chris was so tired she was just watching like she was watching a bad movie. Anyway, we got parked and walked up the hill to the restaurant, which was…closed. Now we are not only tired and hungry. We are both getting a little grouchy. Maybe more than a little. Walking down the street, it starts to rain heavier. We stopped and asked a goth-type girl who was working at one of the shops if there were any restaurants open. She said, “I’m not really sure. It seems most of them have closed.” Great help, Captain Obvious. I happened to look across the street and the best place had an “open” sign. It was the Inn at Jim Thorpe. Beautiful Victorian with all the trimmings. We took a seat on the balcony outside because the music coming from the pub inside was so loud—great singer, but loud. We had a very nice dinner, got over our hunger and grouchiness. And hurried back to the RV in the rain. Philippians 2:14 says, “Do all things without murmuring and disputing.” Uh-huh. Chapter 12 of Matthew’s Gospel tells us that “one day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, ‘Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority’ ” (verse 38 NLT). “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign,” Jesus answered. “But the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights” (verses 39–40 NLT). Here were some individuals who were asking for a miracle. Jesus had performed many miracles. After all, what was one more? Why didn’t He respond to their request? Because Jesus always looked at the motives behind what people said and did. Jesus is far more interested in what’s going on in our hearts than what we are merely saying with our mouths. And as Jesus looked into the hearts of these religious leaders, no doubt He saw the reason for their request. Earlier in the chapter we read, “Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus” (verse 14 NLT). Jesus had healed a man on the Sabbath, and that upset them. These religious leaders wanted to destroy Jesus. They weren’t interested in a miracle. They weren’t interested in a sign. Instead, they were out to get Him. And Jesus recognized this. It’s fascinating to note how Jesus dealt with different people. He never dealt with anyone in the same way. He would look behind the veneer of what was going on and see their hearts. And when a person was truly seeking and a miracle was in order, He did it. Jesus performed numerous miracles for hurting, searching people such as blind Bartimaeus or the woman who had spent everything on doctors who couldn’t heal her. On the other hand, when people came with the wrong motives, He didn’t do a miracle for them. In fact, on some occasions He didn’t even reveal Himself to them. For example, John 2:23 says, “Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him.” But the passage goes on to say, “But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew all about people. No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart” (verses 24–25 NLT). These people who saw His miracles weren’t seeking Him with their whole hearts. They were merely excited about the phenomena. If they had been true seekers, then Jesus would have revealed Himself to them. Speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, God said, “If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me” (Jeremiah 29:13 NLT). Jesus revealed Himself to true seekers. And He repelled those who were not.
